Ford Mustang History

A legendary sports car that has survived the test of time, the Ford Mustang is considered a pioneering model in many respects and a classic American muscle car. This original pony car so inspired the American sports car that the term "pony car" became part of the automotive vernacular and continues as a tribute to the original to this day.

The Mustang has always been a very popular sports car, whether it's a daily driver or a show-winning work of mechanical art. With varying engines, styles, colors, options, and modifications, many owners have completely personalized the Mustang into their own domestic dream machine.

Debuting in 1964, the Mustang immediately gained popularity among the younger crowd as the next muscle car. With more powerful engines coming out through 1973, the Mustang was one powerful symbol of the muscle-car era. The gas crisis of the 1970s forced Ford to downsize Mustang engines in 1974, when the Mustang II was born.

In 1979, the first Fox Body Mustang debuted with the "4-eyed fox" front end. The Fox Body Mustang chassis was virtually unchanged until 2005, but its design was updated in 1994 with the first SN-95 Mustang. The SN-95s were produced between 1994 and 1998 and have a more luxurious interior with updated aesthetics.

In 1999, the 35th Anniversary Mustang debuted with another upgraded exterior that had sharp lines and an aggressive front end and lasted until 2004. In 2005, Ford debuted an all-new Mustang.

With a new chassis, body, interior, and engine, the new Mustang is an aggressive powerhouse for the streets, tracks, and shows, and is a great combination of style and power for the sticker price. Recent speculation about a Carroll Shelby/SVT Cobra debuting in 2007 has put Mustang fans on edge, waiting to see what sort of monster Ford can produce, and at what price.
