2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 showcased a sophisticated and graceful exterior with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, presenting a stately midsize SUV profile at over 16 feet long. Standard 19-inch wheels were available, but the Prestige trim featured impressive 22-inch alloy wheels. The rear design echoed the quad lamp look with four-part taillamps above the dual exhaust. Despite the boxy hands-free liftgate, the SUV maintained an elegant appearance, especially with the matte Brunswick Green paint. Inside, the dark green quilted leather seats complemented the dash, which was split by thin horizontal air vents and adorned with metal and matte wood trim. The center console featured three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes, while the two-spoke steering wheel added a unique touch. The 14.5-inch infotainment screen, though slightly awkwardly placed, was a minor drawback in an otherwise spacious and luxurious interior.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 drew stylistic connections to the G70 compact luxury sedan, particularly above the belt-line, with split-bar headlights and a strong chrome line that visually linked it to its sedan counterpart. The chrome bar cleverly suggested a coupe-like SUV without sacrificing versatility. Inside, the GV70 impressed with top-notch materials and excellent fit and finish, blending contemporary and classic aesthetics. The climate controls were integrated into a curving bezel, and the touchscreen rose organically from the dash. The GV70's dash featured a full touchscreen backed by a rotary dial and button controls, with physical rollers on the center console and steering wheel for volume and tuning. The gas-powered GV70 offered two trims, 2.5T and 3.5T, while the Electrified GV70 had Advance and Prestige trims. The GV70 Electrified Prestige trim boasted luxury credentials with soft, cream-colored quilt-stitched seats and a high-contrast design with black leather on the dash.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was available exclusively with all-wheel drive (AWD) and offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, or a turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the GV80 was not particularly athletic or nimble, it excelled in highway driving with smooth power delivery and shifts. The electronically controlled suspension, combined with active noise cancellation, provided a quiet and comfortable freeway commute.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 2.5T featured a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.5T variant was powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The GV70 offered a refined and well-rounded driving experience, blending comfort and sharp handling. The GV70 Electrified used a 77.4-kWh battery pack powering two electric motors in an AWD setup, delivering a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. The electric version had a range of 236 miles and featured DC fast charging, replenishing the battery from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 18 minutes. The GV70 Electrified also emitted an external "engine noise" and offered several sound options for the cabin.

Form and function

9/10

2023 Genesis GV70

The 2023 Genesis GV80 compensated for its lack of driving excitement with a plethora of features and luxury touches. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel were standard, with ventilated front and rear seats available. The Ergo Motion driver's seat offered fatigue-reducing features, and the Nappa leather seats were sumptuous. A third row was optional, though legroom was limited to 30 inches. The GV80 featured Genesis puddle lamps, a proximity key, and a digital key. The tri-zone climate control system and optional 21-speaker stereo system enhanced comfort and entertainment. The GV80 boasted one of the largest cargo spaces in its class, with 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 84 cubic feet with the seats folded. It also had a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with the seats in use, which was above average for the compact luxury SUV segment. The GV70 came standard with a hands-free power liftgate. The front featured decently large cupholders in the center console, though the in-door cupholders were smaller. The center console included a tray with a retractable lid and a typical console bin. While front-seat passengers could easily find a comfortable seating position, rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to adjust their seats. The rear bench reclined for added comfort.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. The infotainment screen was slightly out of reach for touch use, and the dial was cumbersome, though it offered a "clicky" feel and handwriting detection. The system included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though neither was wireless. The GV80 also had wireless charging, four USB ports, a 12-volt outlet, and a 110-volt outlet. The remote smart parking assist allowed the car to maneuver in and out of tight parking spaces without the driver inside, using a button on the fob.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The touchscreen was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation. The GV70 also had helpful buttons in the center console and a rotary dial for scrolling and selecting, though the dial was located near the vehicle's rotary shifter, which could cause confusion. The GV70 included four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and the Genesis digital key were available features.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was equipped with a comprehensive suite of standard advanced driver’s aids, including forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. A standout feature was the video feed of the car’s blind spot displayed in the digital gauge cluster. The GV80 also had Highway Drive Assist, which used various systems to provide a hands-on/eyes-up driving aid on approved highways. The NHTSA awarded the GV80 a full five-star overall safety rating, while the IIHS rated it Good for crashworthiness and Superior for front crash prevention.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a full suite of driver-assistance technology, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The 2.5T Advance Package added a blind-spot camera system and a 360-degree parking camera system, while the 3.5T Sport Advance package included these features. The GV70 Electrified had most driver-assistance features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.
