2022 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews Summary

You said it and Nissan listened. The automaker is bringing back much of the heralded capability of the classic Pathfinder, as well as a rugged-ish body style, for the 2022 model year. Thoughtful innovations and features make the Pathfinder more than just a competent family hauler while Nissan’s safety tech puts minds at ease.

2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

Look and feel
2022 Nissan Pathfinder

2022 Genesis GV70
9/10

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder showcased a robust and rugged design, drawing inspiration from the original Pathfinder while incorporating modern elements. It featured a new V-motion grille, LED headlights, and a bulky C-pillar, all contributing to its beefier appearance compared to its predecessor. The SUV was available in 14 paint jobs, with options for a black roof and sleek taillights that wrapped around the liftgate. The Pathfinder's design changes aimed to position it as a more capable and rugged vehicle, with a wider track and increased legroom enhancing its road presence.

In contrast, the 2022 Genesis GV70 offered a unique appearance with styling elements borrowed from other Genesis models. It combined quad LED strips for headlights and taillights with a large shield-shaped grille and a sloping roofline, giving it a sleek yet rugged look. The Sport Prestige models added character with unique styling features, including 21-inch wheels and giant round exhaust outlets. The interior boasted an elliptical theme inspired by an airplane's wing, with a minimalistic design and a rotary gear selector, creating a luxurious and futuristic feel.

Performance

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder retained its 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivering 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. It was paired with a new nine-speed automatic transmission, offering smooth gear transitions. Available in both front-wheel-drive (FWD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) configurations, the Pathfinder provided a range of drive modes, with AWD models featuring seven drive and terrain modes. The SUV boasted a 6,000-pound towing capacity and a stable ride, thanks to its improved suspension setup. Fuel economy varied slightly between FWD and AWD models, with the latter offering slightly better highway mileage.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two powertrain options: a base 2.5-liter turbo-four engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. The GV70 featured a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, emphasizing its sporty character. However, while the powertrain could be aggressive, the chassis felt heavy, lacking the sharpness of some competitors. The GV70 excelled in highway cruising but had a firm ride, especially with 21-inch wheels.

Form and function

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder prioritized interior comfort and flexibility, with improved sound insulation and thoughtful design features. It offered best-in-class front-seat legroom and five inches more hip room for third-row passengers. The EZ Flex Latch and Glide second-row seat technology allowed easy access to the third row, even with car seats installed. The Pathfinder provided ample cargo space, with 16.6 cubic feet behind the third row and up to 80.5 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. The interior featured abundant storage options, including a removable second-row center console and a spacious front center console.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered mid-pack interior space for its segment, with adequate legroom and good rear-seat visibility. Cargo space was 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded. The daring interior design compromised storage space, with slim door pockets and a small center console. However, it included a covered storage cubby for phones and rear-seat climate controls. The front seats in the Sport Prestige model were heavily bolstered, offering heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions, though some controls were buried in touchscreen menus.

The Pathfinder also featured a wireless charging pad, door-to-door connected navigation, and multiple USB ports, ensuring a well-connected driving experience.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system's tile-based layout and crisp graphics were user-friendly, and the glass rotary controller added a touch of luxury. Higher trims offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 3D effect and a 12-inch head-up display. The GV70 also featured a digital-key function, a fingerprint scanner for starting the car, and a high-tech rear-seat monitor using radar to detect a baby's breathing. Genesis Connected Services provided additional features like remote camera activation and valet mode.
