2021 Ford Bronco Sport Reviews Summary

After a long buildup, Ford finally made the 2021 Bronco Sport available for the media to test drive. The spunky compact two-row crossover SUV proved to be a lively, capable, and attractive companion for on- and off-pavement adventures.

2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

Look and feel
2021 Ford Bronco Sport

2022 Genesis GV70
9/10

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport was a nod to its rugged heritage, echoing the classic Bronco's styling cues while adapting them for a modern crossover. It featured a frameless design, making it more suitable for urban environments while still being ready for weekend adventures. The Bronco Sport's exterior was characterized by its short front and rear overhangs, tall fender wells, and a body designed to minimize obstructions during trail driving. The bold "BRONCO" lettering on the grille and tailgate, along with the modest Ford badge, added to its distinctive look. The interior was rugged yet tasteful, with a focus on functionality and convenience, including an 8-inch infotainment screen and a rotary gear selector.

The 2022 Genesis GV70, while inheriting some styling elements from other Genesis models, stood out with its unique appearance. It combined SUV bulk with athletic, car-like elements, featuring quad LED strips for headlights and taillights, a large shield-shaped grille, and a sloping roofline. The Sport Prestige model added character with unique styling features, including 21-inch wheels and dark chrome trim. Inside, the GV70 boasted an elliptical theme inspired by an airplane wing, with a minimalistic design and a high-quality rotary gear selector. The interior offered a range of color options and luxurious materials, though base models had leatherette seats.

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport offered two engine choices. The Base, Big Bend, and Outer Banks trims were equipped with a 1.5-liter EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. The Badlands and First Edition models featured a more powerful 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque. All models came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, along with a terrain management system with up to seven G.O.A.T. modes. The Bronco Sport excelled off-road, thanks to its short wheelbase, independent suspension, and generous ground clearance, while maintaining good manners on pavement.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two powertrains: a base 2.5-liter turbo-four engine with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV70 included a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, emphasizing its sporty character. However, while the powertrain could be aggressive, the chassis felt big and heavy, lacking the sharpness of some competitors. The GV70 was more comfortable on highways, though the ride was firm with 21-inch wheels.

Form and function

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport was designed with active buyers in mind, offering clever features like cargo space engineered to hold two 27.5-inch-wheel mountain bikes. It had over 100 factory and aftermarket accessories for transporting outdoor gear. The roof could hold up to 150 pounds, and the 2.0-liter engine could tow up to 2,200 pounds. The cargo hold featured a flip-up rear glass and an optional cargo management package with a slide-out work table. The front cabin had ample storage compartments, though visibility could be challenging for taller drivers.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered mid-pack interior space for its segment, with adequate legroom and good rear-seat visibility. Cargo space was 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded. The interior design compromised storage space, with a slim center console and thin door pockets. The front seats in the Sport Prestige model were heavily bolstered, offering heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions. However, some controls were buried in touchscreen menus, and the posture assist could activate unexpectedly.

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport featured an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with SYNC 3, compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It offered Ford+Alexa, SiriusXM capability, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. Higher trims had a Bang & Olufsen sound system and a 360-degree camera. The terrain management system included up to seven G.O.A.T. modes, and trail control technology was available for off-roading. Intelligent access with push-button start was standard on all but the Base model, and higher trims had a digital instrument panel.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, featuring a tile-based layout and crisp graphics. A glass rotary controller with pinch-and-zoom functionality was included. Higher trims offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12-inch head-up display. The GV70 had a digital-key feature and a fingerprint scanner for starting the car. Genesis Connected Services included a radar-based rear-seat monitor and remote camera activation, along with driver profiles and navigation features.

The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport came standard with the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite, including pre-collision assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and a reversing camera. The Co-Pilot360 Assist+ package added adaptive cruise control, evasive steering assist, and navigation. All models had AWD and a terrain management system with traction control and electronic stability control. Crash-test ratings were not available at the time.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 included standard safety features like lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, and blind-spot assist. It had eight airbags, including a front-center airbag. Optional features included Highway Driving Assist 2 with lane-change functionality and navigation-based adaptive cruise control. The system performed well on highways, though lane-centering had limitations. Crash-test ratings were not available at the time.
