2023 Buick Encore GX Reviews Summary

General Motors has big plans for Buick. The near-luxury division positioned between Chevrolet and Cadillac is slated to go all-electric by the end of the decade, with a fresh lineup of EVs highlighted by a new design language. But those new models aren’t scheduled to arrive for a few more years, so for now Buick carries on with a lineup of conventional gasoline crossover SUVs, of which the 2023 Buick Encore GX is the entry-level option.

The Encore GX was launched for the 2020 model year as a larger sibling to the Buick Encore, but the standard Encore is being discontinued, leaving only the GX for 2023. It slots below the Envision and Enclave in Buick’s three-model crossover lineup.

While Buick is generally considered a step up from mainstream brands, the Encore GX’s size and pricing are more in line with subcompact SUVs from mainstream brands, such as the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30, or the lifted-hatchback Subaru Crosstrek. In fact, the Encore GX shares powertrains and a basic platform with one of these vehicles—the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The only change for 2023 is a new extra-cost Moonstone Gray Metallic paint option. That means the lineup still consists of base Preferred, mid-level Select, and top Essence trim levels. We tested out an Encore GX Essence for this review.

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

Look and feel
2023 Buick Encore GX
5/10
2023 Genesis GV70
8/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX departed from Buick's storied design history, presenting a style that didn't echo the brand's past nor forge a new path. Its rounded exterior and tall stance resulted in awkward proportions that failed to capture the SUV allure that many buyers sought. Even with the optional Sport Touring Package, which included subtle enhancements like different bumpers and a black mesh grille, the changes were barely noticeable unless compared directly to a standard model. Inside, the Encore GX Essence trim offered expected features like leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control, but the abundance of plastic reminded drivers of its position at the lower end of Buick's lineup. The interior design, with its blob-like dashboard, harkened back to less favorable design eras, though the instrument cluster stood out with its well-framed digital display.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a design that cleverly connected to its G70 sedan counterpart, with split-bar headlights and a strong chrome line that suggested a coupe-like SUV without sacrificing versatility. Inside, the GV70 impressed with its luxurious materials and excellent fit and finish, blending contemporary and classic aesthetics. The dashboard featured a full touchscreen supported by a rotary dial and button controls, offering a user-friendly experience. The GV70's interior was a testament to Genesis's luxury credentials, with features like massaging front seats and a panoramic sunroof in higher trims, and a design that was both eye-catching and functional.

Performance
2023 Buick Encore GX
5/10
2023 Genesis GV70
7/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX offered two turbocharged three-cylinder engines: a 1.2-liter producing 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque, and an optional 1.3-liter engine with 155 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available for the 1.3-liter engine. The FWD models used a CVT, while AWD models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission. The 1.3-liter AWD test car provided stronger acceleration than expected, though power delivery was not smooth, requiring a patient driving style. The Encore GX excelled in ride comfort and noise reduction, thanks to its well-damped suspension and active noise cancellation. However, it felt ponderous and awkward, with slow steering and significant body roll.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a more powerful performance with its 2.5T turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, and the 3.5T twin-turbo V6 delivering 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The GV70 balanced comfort and handling, providing a refined driving experience. The Electrified GV70 featured a 77.4-kWh battery with dual motors generating 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 hp. It offered a smooth acceleration and a range of 236 miles, with fast charging capabilities. The GV70's handling leaned towards comfort, making it a well-rounded choice for luxury SUV buyers.

Form and function
2023 Buick Encore GX
7/10
2023 Genesis GV70
6/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX offered competitive passenger space, with headroom comparable to rivals like the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30. However, the Kia Seltos provided more rear legroom and cargo space. The Encore GX had 23.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 50.2 cubic feet with them folded. The front seats were positioned close together, reducing spaciousness, and lacked thigh support. Despite the limited cabin size, Buick maximized small-item storage with large door pockets and a space-efficient wireless phone charger. The instrumentation was well-executed, with clear notifications and an array of hard buttons for ease of use.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with them in use, which was above average for its class. It featured a hands-free power liftgate and ample storage options in the center console. The front seats were easily adjustable for comfort, but rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to adjust their seats. The rear bench offered a reclining feature for added comfort.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX came with a standard 8-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch driver information display. Optional features included navigation, a head-up display, and a Bose audio system. Standard tech included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and SiriusXM radio. The interface was user-friendly, with graphics that were more appealing than many competitors, though the screen size was modest.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was intuitive, with large icons and logical menus, complemented by a rotary dial and helpful buttons. The GV70 included four USB ports, wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo. Ambient lighting and a digital instrument panel were available, though the proximity of the rotary dial to the shifter could cause confusion.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX offered standard driver-assist features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and lane keep assist. Optional features included adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system. The Encore GX received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and was an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2022, with top ratings in crash tests.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The Advance Package on the 2.5T added features like a blind-spot camera and reverse automatic emergency braking. The Electrified GV70 included most of these features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.
