2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition was a striking vehicle, especially in its Black Onyx color. This model eliminated almost all chrome from its exterior, giving it a sleek, monochromatic appearance. However, the GX's design was reminiscent of its predecessors, with a spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the only modern touches. Inside, the cabin was crafted with the quality and refinement Lexus was known for, offering a quiet ride with the faint hum of the V8 engine. Despite its luxurious interior, the GX's overall design felt dated, echoing themes from its original model.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a modern and stylish design, drawing inspiration from the G70 compact luxury sedan. Its split-bar headlights and chrome line added a coupe-like elegance without sacrificing versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a testament to luxury, with top-notch materials and a blend of contemporary and classic aesthetics. The dashboard featured a full touchscreen with a rotary dial and button controls, offering a user-friendly experience. The GV70's interior design was both functional and visually appealing, setting a high standard for luxury SUVs.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Despite its hefty curb weight of 5,126 pounds, the GX managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds. Its six-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD system provided stability, with a 40/60 power split between the front and rear wheels. However, its fuel economy was a downside, with an EPA estimate of 16 mpg in combined driving. The GX's Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System improved its ride quality, but the steering and brake pedal required effort, making it less agile in urban settings.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 375 horsepower. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV70 Electrified model featured dual electric motors, delivering 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower. The electric GV70 had a range of 236 miles and supported fast charging. The GV70's handling was well-rounded, balancing comfort and sportiness, making it a versatile choice for various driving conditions.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat, providing clear visibility. Its tall, narrow design made it maneuverable, but the steering was slow. The interior featured comfortable seats and physical controls, though some were outdated. The Black Line Special Edition included NuLuxe upholstery and black ash wood trim. The GX's third-row seat was cramped, reducing cargo space and making access difficult. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, with limited cargo capacity even with seats folded.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with them in use. It featured a hands-free power liftgate and ample storage options in the front. The front seats were comfortable, but rear legroom was tighter, requiring adjustments for comfort. The rear bench reclined, enhancing passenger comfort. Overall, the GV70 offered a practical and spacious interior for a compact luxury SUV.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The system was user-friendly, with a dual-screen view for navigation and radio. However, the stereo controls were awkwardly placed, and the system retained an outdated touchpad. The GX included a CD player and a Lexus app with connected services, but lacked advanced technology compared to competitors.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The interface was intuitive, with large icons and logical menus. The GV70 included four USB ports, wireless charging, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and a Genesis digital key were available, enhancing the vehicle's technological appeal.

Safety

2023 Genesis GV70

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX came with Lexus Safety System+, featuring adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. It also included blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. However, it lacked advanced safety technologies found in competitors, such as lane-keeping assist and semi-autonomous driving systems.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The 2.5T model's Advance Package added a blind-spot camera and 360-degree parking system. The Electrified GV70 included most features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.
