2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

The 2023 BMW X7 receives a significant refresh, with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. A recent test drive left us scratching our heads over the new headlights and pulling out our hair over the new infotainment system. So in some ways the 2023 X7 represents a step backwards for this large luxury SUV.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 BMW X7

6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition was a striking vehicle, especially in its Black Onyx color. This model eliminated almost all chrome from its exterior, giving it a bold, monochromatic appearance. Despite its modern touches, the GX's design felt dated, reminiscent of its first-generation predecessor. Inside, the cabin was crafted with the high-quality materials Lexus is known for, offering a quiet and refined environment. However, the overall design theme remained similar to older models, with some outdated switchgear and a layout that could confuse users.

In contrast, the 2023 BMW X7 underwent a significant facelift, adopting a more aggressive front-end design similar to the BMW 7 Series sedan. The new styling was polarizing, with LED accent lights and a recessed headlight design. The interior received a modern update with a curved glass housing for the digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen. The materials used were of premium quality, with options for leather and synthetic substitutes. Despite some design choices that could cause glare, the X7's interior was well-built and offered a modern, elegant appearance.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 BMW X7

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD, allowed the GX to tow up to 6,500 pounds. However, its performance was hampered by a high curb weight and a drag coefficient of 0.35, resulting in an EPA fuel economy estimate of 16 mpg combined. The GX's Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System improved stability, but the steering was slow and heavy, making parking a chore.

The 2023 BMW X7 offered two engine options. The base xDrive40i model featured a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, producing 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. The M60i model upgraded to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 523 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The X7's performance was impressive, with the V8 model reaching 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Despite its weight, the X7 handled well, offering a blend of performance and comfort.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 BMW X7

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position and clear visibility, but its narrow width and short length made it challenging to maneuver in tight spaces. The interior featured comfortable seats and physical controls, though some were outdated and confusingly placed. The third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access, reducing cargo space when in use. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, and overall cargo capacity was limited compared to competitors.

The 2023 BMW X7 excelled in interior space, with ample room for second-row passengers and a power-operated middle row for easier third-row access. The third row could accommodate average-sized adults, though thigh support was limited. Cargo space was generous, with 12.8 cubic feet behind the third row and up to 90.4 cubic feet with all seats folded. The split tailgate and adjustable suspension made loading easier, and front-seat storage was plentiful.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 BMW X7

5/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a significant improvement over previous models. It included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and navigation, along with a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services. However, the placement of stereo controls was awkward, and the system retained some outdated elements like the Remote Touch Interface touchpad.

The 2023 BMW X7 came with the latest iDrive infotainment system, which, despite its intuitive layout, had moved many functions to the touchscreen, complicating basic operations. Voice commands were available but could be slow and interruptive. The system lacked physical buttons for frequently used features, making it less user-friendly than previous iterations.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 BMW X7

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and more. However, it missed some advanced safety technologies found in competitors, which could be a drawback for safety-conscious buyers.

The 2023 BMW X7 also lacked crash-test ratings but offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including frontal collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. The M60i trim added a surround-view camera system and optional advanced features like adaptive cruise control and highway driving assist, which performed well during testing.
