2023 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

The 2023 BMW X7 receives a significant refresh, with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. A recent test drive left us scratching our heads over the new headlights and pulling out our hair over the new infotainment system. So in some ways the 2023 X7 represents a step backwards for this large luxury SUV.

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid Reviews Summary

During the past three years, the RX 450h hybrid has accounted for an average of 15.4% of all Lexus RX sales in the U.S. Now, a redesigned 2023 Lexus RX is set to go on sale by the end of 2022, and the automaker will offer three hybrid models: the RX 350h, RX 450h+, and the RX 500h F Sport Performance. Based on time spent driving two of these three new 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid models, we expect them to at least double, if not triple, the previous-generation RX 450h’s share of sales. As long as the price is right, of course.

Look and feel

2023 BMW X7

6/10

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 BMW X7 underwent a significant design update, adopting a bolder front-end style reminiscent of the BMW 7 Series sedan. The new LED accent lights and recessed headlights contributed to a more controversial look, especially with the oversized kidney grille. While the sides and rear remained largely unchanged, the interior saw a modern refresh with a curved glass housing for the digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen. The interior materials were of high quality, with options for leather upholstery and a new Sensafin synthetic substitute. Despite some design choices that might not appeal to everyone, the X7's interior revisions added a touch of elegance and modernity.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid maintained a more understated exterior, with the RX 350h and RX 500h F Sport Performance models offering subtle differences. The RX 500h stood out with its performance-tuned design, featuring a blacked-out grille and aggressive styling. The interior of the RX adopted a minimalistic approach, with fewer controls and an improved infotainment system. The RX 350h Luxury model boasted semi-aniline leather and Ash Bamboo wood trim, while the RX 500h offered a sportier feel with artificial suede and dark gray aluminum trim. Overall, the RX Hybrid's design was more about refinement and comfort than making a bold statement.

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

The 2023 BMW X7 offered two engine options. The base xDrive40i model featured a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, producing 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This setup allowed the X7 to reach 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The M60i model upgraded to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, achieving 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Despite its nearly 6,000-pound weight, the X7 handled well, with a composed ride and minimal body roll. The ride was slightly firmer than some competitors, but it balanced performance and comfort effectively.

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid offered different powertrains. The RX 350h used a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a hybrid system, producing 246 hp and 233 lb-ft of torque, achieving 60 mph in 7.4 seconds. It was more fuel-efficient, averaging 36 mpg. The RX 500h F Sport Performance featured a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder hybrid system, generating 366 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, reaching 60 mph in 5.9 seconds. It included an adaptive damping suspension and Dynamic Rear Steering, enhancing its athleticism. However, its fuel economy was lower, averaging 20.9 mpg. The RX 350h offered a quieter ride and better fuel efficiency, while the RX 500h provided a more engaging driving experience.

Form and function

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

The 2023 BMW X7 provided ample space, with a roomy second row and a power-operated middle row for easier third-row access. The third row accommodated average-sized adults, though thigh support was limited. Cargo space was 12.8 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 48.6 cubic feet with it folded, and 90.4 cubic feet with the middle seats down. The split tailgate and adjustable suspension made loading easier. Front-seat storage was generous, with a large center console and door pockets.

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid offered comfortable seating, with the RX 350h Luxury model featuring ten-way power-adjustable front seats and premium leather. The RX 500h had eight-way power seats with larger bolsters. Rear leg support was excellent, but headroom was tight due to the battery placement. Cargo space improved to 29.6 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 46.2 cubic feet with it folded. The RX Hybrid's interior was well-suited for comfort and practicality, though it fell short compared to some rivals in cargo capacity.

Technology

2023 BMW X7

5/10

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

6/10

The 2023 BMW X7 featured the latest iDrive infotainment system, which was less intuitive than previous versions. Many functions moved to the touchscreen, making simple tasks more complicated. Voice commands offered some relief, but the lack of physical buttons was a drawback. The system's complexity detracted from its overall usability.

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid introduced a new infotainment system, requiring subscription services for full functionality. The Lexus Interface included cloud-based navigation and an Intelligent Assistant. While the system worked well, it had limitations, such as only displaying one menu at a time and lacking a tuning knob. The head-up display with touch-sensing control pads was problematic for those wearing polarized sunglasses. Despite these issues, the RX's technology was a significant improvement over previous models.

Safety

7/10

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

8/10

The 2023 BMW X7 came with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including frontal collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive headlights. The M60i trim added a surround-view camera system and optional adaptive cruise control. The highway driving assist feature was particularly effective, reducing driver fatigue on long trips.

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid included Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, featuring motorcycle detection, evasive steering assistance, and intersection turn assistance. Proactive Driving Assist helped maintain safe distances and speeds. While some features, like the front cross-traffic alert, had limitations, the overall safety package was robust. The Traffic Jam Assist and Advanced Park systems offered additional convenience, though they were not tested.
