2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2023 Volvo XC90
10/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 exhibited a design that cleverly connected it to its sedan counterpart, the G70, with stylistic elements like split-bar headlights and a strong chrome line that suggested a coupe-like SUV without sacrificing versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a testament to luxury, featuring top-notch materials and a design that was both contemporary and classic. The dashboard was equipped with a full touchscreen, complemented by a rotary dial and button controls, offering a user-friendly interface. The GV70 was available in both gas-powered and electrified versions, with various trims offering a range of luxury features, from genuine leather upholstery to advanced driver-assistance technologies.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a purposeful yet understated design, moving away from the boxy aesthetics of its predecessors. Its front end was solid and assertive, with the iconic "Thor’s Hammer" headlights adding a modern touch. The XC90's interior was elegant, featuring a minimalist design with luxurious materials like Nappa leather and wood deco inlays. The cabin was spacious, though storage options were limited. The XC90 offered a comfortable driving experience, with a focus on safety and practicality, making it a compelling choice for families.

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered two gas-powered engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV70 provided a balanced driving experience, blending comfort and handling. The electrified version featured a 77.4-kWh battery powering two electric motors, producing a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower. It offered a range of 236 miles and fast charging capabilities.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced new B5 and B6 engines with mild-hybrid technology, replacing the older T5 and T6 engines. The B5 engine, with a turbocharger and mild-hybrid system, produced 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the B6 engine, with a supercharger and turbo, delivered 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The mild-hybrid system improved fuel efficiency and smoothness, though the benefits were minimal. The XC90 provided a reserved driving experience, with quick acceleration and a well-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission. It handled well for its size, with minimal road and wind noise, and offered a simple driving experience without extensive off-road capabilities.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with them in use, making it competitive in the compact luxury SUV segment. The interior featured practical storage solutions, though rear legroom was limited. The GV70's front seats were comfortable and adjustable, while the rear seats required some compromise for comfort.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 provided a peaceful and pleasant front-seat experience, though storage options were limited. The second row was comfortable and spacious, but accessing the third row was challenging. The XC90 offered 12.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row in use, 41.8 cubic feet with it folded, and 65.5 cubic feet with all rear seats down. It was smaller than typical three-row SUVs, offering a more car-like driving experience.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It included four USB ports, wireless device charging, and a nine-speaker stereo system. The interface was user-friendly, though the proximity of the rotary dial to the shifter could cause confusion.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's 9-inch touchscreen ran on Google OS, integrating Google Maps, Spotify, and Google Assistant. The system offered natural-language recognition and could be controlled via Google Home devices. However, many functions were buried within the touchscreen interface, which could be frustrating. The minimalist design lacked physical buttons for some features, requiring adjustment for new users.
