2022 Toyota 4Runner Reviews Summary

Family-hauling, kid-toting three-row SUVs have become the de facto vehicle in most suburban towns. Just look in any mall parking lot, and you’re bound to see countless Honda Pilots and Toyota Highlanders. So ubiquitous are these vehicles, you might forget that the definition of “Sport Utility Vehicle” is actually quite vast, and there are still new examples that have some connection to the segment’s rugged origins.

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is one such example. It may not be optimized for soccer practice or pizza-party duties, but it can certainly handle them. Just as crucially, it can also venture out where these mall-dwelling SUVs dare not go. If two years of a pandemic have taught us anything about ourselves, it's that the ability to get out on an adventure is more relevant than ever, and the 4Runner is one vehicle so-equipped to do it.

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

Look and feel
2022 Toyota 4Runner
6/10
2023 Genesis GV70
8/10

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner retained its rugged, adventure-ready design, reminiscent of its 1980s SUV roots. Unlike many modern SUVs that have shifted to car-based platforms, the 4Runner maintained its connection to the Toyota Tacoma pickup, offering a high ride height, boxy proportions, and a sharply angled front bumper for tackling obstacles. Inside, the 4Runner's design was functional but dated, with a dash layout reminiscent of the late 2000s. It offered trims like the SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited, each with varying features and off-road capabilities.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a blend of contemporary and classic luxury design, with stylistic connections to the G70 compact luxury sedan. Its interior was crafted with top-notch materials, featuring a modern aesthetic with climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that rose organically from the dash. The GV70's cabin was equipped with a full touchscreen, rotary dial, and button controls, offering a user-friendly experience. The GV70 was available in gas-powered and electrified versions, with trims like the 2.5T, 3.5T, Advance, and Prestige, each offering a range of luxury features and performance enhancements.

Performance

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner was powered by a single 4.0-liter V6 engine, producing 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, delivered power to the rear wheels or available 4WD. While reliable, the engine felt underwhelming in most driving situations, and the ride was harsh and cumbersome, with significant body roll. However, off-road, the 4Runner excelled, with features like Crawl Control and a locking differential enhancing its trail capabilities. It could tow up to 5,000 pounds, more than most car-based crossovers.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a more dynamic performance with its turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV70 Electrified version featured a 77.4-kWh battery pack powering two electric motors, producing a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower. The GV70 provided a refined driving experience, blending comfort and sharp handling, with a range of 236 miles and fast-charging capabilities.

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner offered a maximum of 89.7 cubic feet of cargo space in the two-row version, with 47.2 cubic feet behind the second row. The optional three-row configuration reduced maximum cargo space to 88.8 cubic feet, with just 9 cubic feet behind the rear seats. While the 4Runner lacked a power rear liftgate, it featured a power-open/close rear window for easy access. Despite its age, the 4Runner provided ample space for gear, though it could have been more efficient in cabin packaging.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with the seats in use, above average for its class. It came standard with a hands-free power liftgate and featured decently large cupholders and storage spaces in the center console. While front-seat passengers could easily find a comfortable seating position, rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to adjust their seats. The rear bench reclined for added comfort.

The 2022 Toyota 4Runner featured an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. It included Bluetooth connectivity, Satellite Radio, and multiple USB ports. While the system was straightforward and relied on tactile controls, it lacked advanced features like a head-up display. Optional upgrades included navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation, complemented by a rotary dial and helpful buttons. The GV70 included four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Available features included ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and the Genesis digital key.

The 4Runner earned four out of five stars in frontal and side-impact testing from the NHTSA.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Advance Package added a blind-spot camera system, reverse automatic emergency braking, and a 360-degree parking camera system. The Electrified version included most of these features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.
