2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS Reviews Summary

Available in GLS 450, GLS 580, AMG GLS 63, and Maybach GLS model series, the 2024 Mercedes GLS offers something for anyone who can afford it. This year, minor styling modifications, fresh colors and trim, more standard equipment, enhanced off-roading technology, and a new version of its MBUX (Mercedes Benz User Experience) infotainment system update the large three-row SUV for 2024. The changes are welcome, improving an already appealing luxury vehicle.

Verdict: Often, when you buy something expensive, it fails to meet expectations. That’s not the case with the terrific 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Yes, the price of entry is steep. But the gratification of living with one every day makes it worthwhile.

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

9/10

2024 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class exuded a soft sensuality in its design, which some may have seen as bordering on boring, but it matured gracefully over time. The GLS 450 test vehicle sported dazzling 22-inch AMG rims that paired beautifully with its new silver four-louver grille design, polished metal exterior accents, and lustrous Twilight Blue paint color. While blacked-out trims were trending, the shimmering details of this Mercedes showcased a counter-culturist’s elegance.

Inside, the GLS 450 revealed the new Bahia Brown over Black interior color scheme, matched with the returning natural-grain Grey Oak trim. Polished aluminum accents and exquisite detailing highlighted the luxurious ambiance Mercedes interiors are known for.

The GLS 450's interior upgrades included the AMG Line and Exclusive Trim Packages, as well as an Acoustic Comfort Package. It had leather upholstery and wood trim, with artificial leather covering the dashboard and door panels. Second-row captain’s chairs were available at no extra charge, making the cabin both opulent and functional.

Switching to the 2024 Genesis GV80, this vehicle also made a strong impression with its top-tier Prestige Signature trim. The Matterhorn White Matte paint choice boosted the vehicle’s MSRP to $84,600, making it a visually captivating and premium option.

The Prestige Signature trimmed models came in exclusive colors like Vik Black, Matterhorn White Matte, and Mauna Red, complemented by dark chrome trims and a nearly invisible stylish 22-inch wheel design. Despite its high-end appeal, the GV80's wheels somewhat diminished the aesthetic due to their dark paint, masking intricate details.

The GV80's interior was truly luxurious. The Ultramarine Blue over Dune design featured diamond-stitched Nappa leather, an artificial leather dashboard wrap, matte-finish wood trim, a suede headliner, and metallic-finish accents. In addition, ambient lighting, a 3D digital instrument cluster, and a wide touchscreen display for the infotainment system highlighted its flagship status.

Performance

2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS

8/10

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

Driving the 2024 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 proved to be a sublime experience, thanks to its turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine featuring mild-hybrid (MHEV) technology. This power unit produced 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, enabling a swift 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds. The integrated starter-generator provided an extra 148 lb-ft of instant torque, making the GLS 450 feel lively from a stop.

The nine-speed automatic transmission worked seamlessly with the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Different driving modes such as Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Individual allowed for adaptability in various driving conditions. Towing capacity reached an impressive 7,700 pounds. Despite a listed 21 mpg in combined driving, test results showed an actual 19.9 mpg in Southern California.

The vehicle’s adaptive air suspension enabled nimble handling for a 5,489-pound SUV. The reigning factor, though, was the massive Continental Premium Contact tires, providing excellent grip. Yet, the contact with road grit resulted in some noticeable rustling sounds.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80 came with two engine options. The 2.5T delivered 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, surpassing some rivals with larger V6 engines. Our test vehicle, the 3.5T, housed a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, producing 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Despite the power, it proved thirstier with observed fuel consumption of 17.2 mpg versus the EPA rating of 20 mpg.

The eight-speed automatic transmission coupled with the all-wheel-drive system offered five driving modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, Custom, and Snow. Its towing capacity was 6,000 pounds. The updated front brakes and adaptive damping suspension provided a smoother driving experience, especially over long distances, although seat comfort was a mixed bag.

Form and function

2024 Genesis GV80

In terms of interior space, the optional AMG Line package on the GLS-Class introduced sportier trims that caused inconvenience during entry and exit due to road grime. The cabin felt incredibly well-appointed with leather surfaces, front-seat massage programs, and a panoramic sunroof enhancing the expansive second-row legroom. However, the third-row access was cumbersome, reducing practicality for adults.

Cargo space in the GLS-Class measured 17.4 cubic feet behind the third row, 42.7 cubic feet behind the second, and an ample 84.7 cubic feet with all seats folded, ensuring its role as a practical family SUV.

The GV80, particularly the 3.5T Advanced, included a third-row seat. However, the Prestige Signature trim limited capacity to four people due to second-row captain’s chairs divided by a large console. This limitation made it less ideal for family trips, though standard features like heated seats and a power liftgate provided a plush feel.

The GV80’s cargo space was 34.9 cubic feet behind the second row, significantly more than the GLS, but maxed out at 84 cubic feet when both rows were folded. The rear center console in the Prestige Signature necessitated caution when loading large items.

The 2024 GLS-Class's MBUX infotainment system featured dual 12.3-inch screens for digital instrumentation and infotainment. Improved graphics and various themes enhanced the user experience. However, touch-sensitive areas on the steering wheel and center console occasionally led to frustration by unintentionally altering settings.

With voice recognition, natural language understanding, and an augmented reality navigation system, MBUX represented a pinnacle of user-friendly automotive technology, despite the minor irritations from its touch controls.

The Genesis GV80’s technology package included a soon-to-be discontinued traditional analog gauge option in favor of digital instrumentation in 2025. The 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, though far off, worked well with the center console dial.

The wide-ranging infotainment features included satellite radio, navigation, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Wireless smartphone charging was standard, and the voice-recognition system proved simple and effective. Features like the digital key and the Lexicon premium sound system added modern touches to the GV80’s tech suite.

Safety

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

Both the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Genesis GV80 were loaded with safety technologies. The GLS's ADAS allowed comprehensive customization, leading to minimal driver irritation and high praise for its smooth operation in various driving conditions, such as adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist. Only a single minor issue with the lane-centering assist surfaced during testing.

The Genesis GV80's safety tech was equally impressive. The Blind-Spot View Monitor, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Highway Driving Assist provided high levels of safety, though HDA was less ideal for higher-speed heavy traffic. Both the IIHS and NHTSA rated the GV80 highly, with Top Safety Pick+ and five-star overall ratings respectively.
