2023 Kia Telluride Reviews Summary

Kia can barely keep up with demand for the Telluride, and its dealers and customers have told the company not to change a single thing, so you’d think it unnecessary for the automaker to invest a single penny upgrading the popular three-row crossover SUV.

Kia would disagree.

This year, the 2023 Telluride gets minor styling changes, new technologies, and some off-roading attitude in the form of new X-Line and X-Pro trim levels. We headed to San Antonio, Texas, which has somehow become the seventh most populous city in the U.S., to sample the Telluride’s new kit. And we remain impressed with this excellent family-size sport-ute.

2024 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Verdict: The GV70 offers style, impressive tech, and a well-executed electric variant. Launched as a 2022 model and thus still very fresh, the Genesis GV70 is the Korean luxury brand’s answer to the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Lexus NX, Volvo XC60, and other small luxury crossover SUVs. The GV70 checks most of the boxes needed to compete in this segment while offering something the competition doesn’t: an all-electric powertrain option.

The 2023 Kia Telluride X-Line and X-Pro models showcased a refreshed design with updated front and rear styling, new headlights, taillights, and wheel designs. The SUV was available in new paint colors like Midnight Lake Blue, Dawning Red, and Jungle Green, with interior options in Terracotta, Navy, and Sage Green. The X-Line model replaced the Nightfall Edition, featuring a raised suspension, unique grille design, and black 20-inch wheels, while the X-Pro model added exclusive 18-inch wheels and all-terrain tires, enhancing its off-road appeal. Inside, the Telluride boasted a digital instrumentation panel and a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, housed under a curved 24-inch glass piece, giving it a modern edge. Other interior updates included new colors, minor trim changes, and a redesigned steering wheel, with embossed trim names on the front seatbacks of the X-Line and X-Pro models.

The 2024 Genesis GV70 stood out with its sleek design, featuring signature Genesis styling elements like split headlights and a large shield-like grille. It was sleeker than its larger sibling, the GV80, and avoided the quirkiness of the smaller GV60. The GV70 had standout details such as a hatchback-like rear window profile, large round exhaust outlets on the Sport Prestige trim, and distinctive 21-inch wheel designs. It balanced SUV size and luxury-car style, offering a more refined look compared to competitors like the Audi Q5 and BMW X3. The Electrified GV70 maintained the same styling as the gasoline models, with a shiny grille housing the charge port for easy access at charging stations. The interior was distinctive, with available quilted Nappa leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, and unique design elements like an elliptical pod for climate controls and a rotary infotainment controller.

Performance

The 2023 Kia Telluride retained its mechanical setup with a 3.8-liter V6 engine producing 291 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It offered driving modes like Eco, Comfort, Smart, Sport, and Snow, with an AWD system featuring a low-speed Lock setting for power distribution. The Telluride X-Line averaged 24.1 mpg, while the X-Pro returned 20.4 mpg, with official EPA ratings at 21 mpg combined for AWD models. The X-Line and X-Pro had raised suspensions, improved ground clearance, and modified traction control for better off-road performance. The X-Pro also featured 18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, and an improved cooling system, increasing towing capacity to 5,500 pounds. The Telluride excelled in off-road conditions, showcasing its AWD Lock mode, ground clearance, and stability. On highways, it offered a smooth ride with some wind noise, and the steering firmed up too much in Sport mode.

The 2024 Genesis GV70 offered unchanged powertrain options, with a standard 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and an available 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD. The Electrified GV70 featured front and rear electric motors producing 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode providing 483 hp for short bursts. The GV70 offered straight-line acceleration but felt heavier and slower through corners compared to sportier rivals. Its suspension was reasonably comfortable but tended to crash on bumps. The Electrified model maintained similar handling despite its additional weight, with adjustable regenerative braking for one-pedal driving. It offered a 236-mile EPA-rated range, with no significant downsides compared to the gasoline model.

The 2023 Kia Telluride accommodated seven or eight passengers, with premium Nappa leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and heated and ventilated front- and second-row captain’s chairs in the SX Prestige trim. The interior was spacious, with comfortable front seats and a power lumbar stabilization system for long trips. The second row offered manual sunshades, USB ports, and storage pockets, while a button on the captain’s chairs facilitated access to the third row. The third-row seating was more comfortable than many competitors, though not as spacious as the Volkswagen Atlas. The Telluride provided ample storage space, with a smart power tailgate and generous cargo capacity of 21 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 87 cubic feet with both rear rows folded.

The 2024 Genesis GV70 offered comparable interior space to its rivals, with slightly less headroom but more front-seat legroom than the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class. It had 28.9 cubic feet of cargo space with rear seats in place, better than the Mercedes but less than the Audi Q5. Folding the rear seats provided 56.9 cubic feet, less than its German competitors. The Electrified GV70 had minimal impact on interior space, with slight reductions in legroom and headroom. The stylish interior design limited small-item storage, but included a phone storage nook and rear-seat climate controls. The Electrified model featured automatic side bolsters for the front seats, enhancing support during spirited driving.

The 2023 Kia Telluride featured a standard 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, navigation, and Kia Connect services, including a Wi-Fi hotspot. The voice recognition system performed well, though climate control adjustments required manual input. The Kia Access app allowed remote control via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, with OTA updates and dual Bluetooth device pairing. The Telluride included Driver Talk and Quiet Mode, a 10-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, wireless charging, and digital-key technology. A Full Display Mirror and optional head-up display with a 10-inch viewing area were available, along with a Leading Vehicle Departure Alert system.

The 2024 Genesis GV70 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Lower trims had an 8-inch digital instrument cluster, while higher trims featured a 12.3-inch unit with a 3D effect. A 12-inch head-up display and a 16-speaker Lexicon audio system were available. The touchscreen had an intuitive layout, accessible to both driver and passenger, with a rotary controller for alternative input. Genesis included a fingerprint scanner for driver profiles and digital key functionality, allowing a phone to replace the key fob for unlocking and starting the vehicle.
