2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Hyundai’s Genesis luxury brand has only been around for about five years, but it’s progressed so much in that time it seems like much longer than that. Genesis has quickly gone from selling two repurposed Hyundai sedans to fielding a full lineup of luxury cars and creating a distinct identity through bold design.

The 2022 Genesis GV70 is the brand’s latest effort. Not to be confused with the Genesis G70 sedan, the GV70 is a crossover SUV positioned below the recently-launched Genesis GV80 in size and price, meaning it competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, Volvo XC60, and numerous other small luxury SUVs. As with the larger GV80 and the Genesis sedans, the challenge for the GV70 will be convincing new-car buyers to abandon familiar nameplates for something they might not have heard of.

The GV70 launches with a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6. The four-cylinder is available with Standard, Select, Advanced, and Sport Prestige trim levels, while the V6 engine is available with all trim levels except the Select. Our test car was a GV70 3.5T, a range-topping AWD Sport Prestige model with the 3.5-liter V6.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II when the Willys-Overland company supplied the MB to the American troops. Fast forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts.

Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels like the Sport, High Altitude, Willys Sport, and Sahara don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 showcased a distinctive design that set it apart from its siblings in the Genesis lineup. It featured quad LED strips for both headlights and taillights, along with a prominent shield-shaped grille. The GV70's sloping roofline and ribbed detailing added a touch of athleticism to its SUV bulk, creating a balance between ruggedness and sleekness. The Sport Prestige model further enhanced its character with unique styling elements, including a model-specific front fascia, 21-inch wheels with a web pattern, and dark chrome trim. Inside, the GV70's interior embraced an elliptical theme inspired by an airplane wing's cross-section, with a minimalistic design that included a perched touchscreen and hidden air vents. The interior offered a variety of color options and luxurious materials, such as Nappa leather upholstery with suede inserts, although base models featured leatherette seats.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler embodied a rugged, no-nonsense design with its boxy shape and iconic seven-slot grille. Available in both two-door and four-door configurations, the Wrangler allowed for customization with removable doors and a fold-down windshield for an open-air experience. The Wrangler's design was simple and functional, with wide fenders and old-school exterior hood latches. The rear tailgate swung out, and the rear glass lifted for easy cargo access. The Wrangler also introduced new color options, including the limited-edition Reign purple and the Earl gray shade. Inside, the Wrangler prioritized practicality with easy-to-clean floor mats and seats, a body-colored dash, and chunky HVAC controls. However, it lacked some luxury features like ambient lighting and massaging seats, which were more common in higher-end SUVs.

Performance

2022 Genesis GV70

7/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two engine options: a base 2.5-liter turbo-four engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a more powerful 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 generating 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, setting it apart from competitors like the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, which had rear-wheel drive as standard. The GV70 also featured a rear electronic limited-slip differential and launch control, emphasizing its sporty intentions. The Sport+ drive mode further enhanced its performance, holding high revs and sharpening throttle response. However, the GV70's chassis felt heavy, lacking the sharpness of rivals like the Acura RDX and Porsche Macan. While it excelled on highways, the firm ride and lack of solidity detracted from its luxury appeal.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler, renowned for its off-road prowess, offered a range of engine options to suit different needs. The standard V6 engine delivered 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine provided 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Torque enthusiasts could opt for the 3.0-liter Ecodiesel V6 with 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392, with its 6.4-liter V8 engine producing 470 horsepower and torque, offered exhilarating performance, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid combined two electric motors with a 17.3 kWh battery pack, offering 21 miles of all-electric range. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were enhanced by solid axles, optional differential lockers, and various transfer cases. However, the 392 model's brakes and steering were less refined, requiring early braking and precise steering inputs.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

The 2022 Genesis GV70 provided mid-pack interior space for its segment. Despite its car-like roofline, it offered comparable front-seat headroom to the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class and back-seat headroom to the BMW X3. Legroom in both rows was adequate, and rear-seat visibility was good due to thin rear pillars. Cargo space measured 28.9 cubic feet with the rear seats in place and 56.9 cubic feet with them folded, placing it in the middle ground between competitors. The daring interior design compromised storage space, with a slim center console and thin door pockets. However, it included a covered storage cubby with USB ports and rear-seat climate controls. The Sport Prestige model featured heavily bolstered front seats with heating, ventilation, massage, and posture-assist functions, although some controls were buried in touchscreen menus.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler offered comfortable front seats, with heated options available in the 392 model or through a cold-weather package. Ventilated seats were not offered. The rear seat could accommodate three passengers in four-door models, but space was tight, and the small rear doors made entry and exit challenging. Storage for small items was limited, with a flat dash and small glove box and center console. The Wrangler's cargo space measured 72.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, slightly less than the Ford Bronco. The Wrangler's removable hard top and soft top options allowed for open-air experiences, with the Sky One-Touch power soft top providing quick and convenient operation. The Wrangler excelled in providing charging points, with multiple USB ports and a 115-volt outlet.

Technology

2023 Jeep Wrangler

The 2022 Genesis GV70 boasted a comprehensive tech suite, featuring a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The tile-based layout and crisp graphics made it user-friendly, while the glass rotary controller added functionality with pinch-and-zoom capabilities. Higher trim levels offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a 3D effect and a 12-inch head-up display. The GV70 also included a digital-key feature, allowing drivers to use a smartphone as a key fob, and a fingerprint scanner for starting the car. Genesis Connected Services provided remote camera activation, driver profiles, and more, with a three-year free subscription.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler came with a standard 7-inch touchscreen running the Uconnect infotainment system, with an optional 8.4-inch screen. While initially complex, Uconnect's interface became intuitive with use, offering off-road pages with detailed information. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included. The Wrangler focused on practical tech, with a forward-facing camera for off-road trails and auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories. However, it lacked features like a digital key and over-the-air updates for vehicle performance.

Safety

2022 Genesis GV70

2023 Jeep Wrangler

6/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including lane-keep assist, forward-collision warning, blind-spot and forward collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, and a driver-attention monitor. It also featured Highway Driving Assist with automated lane centering and adaptive cruise control. The GV70 included eight airbags, including a front-center airbag. Optional features included Highway Driving Assist 2 with lane-change functionality and navigation-based adaptive cruise control. While crash-test ratings were not available, the GV70's safety features impressed during testing.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler offered limited standard safety features, including a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control. Blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control were standard only on the top 392 model, with other trims requiring an option package. Lane-keeping assist was not available. The Wrangler's safety features could be customized, with adjustable settings for blind-spot and forward collision warnings. The IIHS ratings were mixed, with some trims receiving Poor ratings for headlights. The NHTSA gave the Wrangler a four-star frontal crash test rating and a three-star rollover rating.
