2021 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

In some parts of America, large luxury three-row SUVs are commonplace, but the list of available models is relatively short. Until recently, one famous German automaker was missing from the menu, but when the X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as a new BMW, that changed.

Based on the BMW X5 and built in the same South Carolina factory, the 2021 BMW X7 sees a few changes for 2021. The standard xDrive40i model gains a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain offering an incremental increase in efficiency, BMW cancels the xDrive50i version, and the performance-tuned Alpina XB7 debuts.

BMW also modifies the SUV’s standard, optional, and package equipment this year, restricting many of the X7’s most decadent features to the Alpina XB7.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, is superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2021 BMW X7

8/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2021 BMW X7 was a standout in the luxury SUV segment, often seen navigating the bustling streets of metropolitan Los Angeles. It was known for its superior interior quality, surpassing that of the Cadillac Escalade, and boasted more prestige than the Infiniti QX80 or Lincoln Navigator. The X7 offered advanced technological features that outshone the Lexus LX 570 and had a commanding visual presence that rivaled the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Despite its impressive attributes, the X7's appeal was subjective, as personal preference played a significant role in this segment.

The X7 was available in three versions, with the xDrive40i starting at $74,900, the M50i at $99,800, and the Alpina BX7 at $141,300. The test vehicle, an X7 xDrive40i, was equipped with 22-inch aluminum wheels, premium leather, and a trailer hitch, among other features, bringing its price to $91,745. The X7's design, characterized by its large grille, was fitting for its size, and its styling was both traditional and glamorous, securing its place at the top of BMW's SUV lineup. Inside, the X7 shared similarities with the X5, offering high-tech design and quality materials, though some quirks required acclimation.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, on the other hand, was a vehicle that demanded decisions from the start, with choices between two-door and four-door models, various powertrains, and multiple 4WD systems. It came in four core trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon, with numerous special editions like the High Tide model, which added unique features such as LED lighting and a body-color hardtop. The Wrangler's price ranged from $30,000 to $80,000, but options could quickly increase the cost.

The High Tide edition, based on the Wrangler Unlimited Sport S, included the Xtreme Recon package with a suspension lift and 35-inch tires. It featured a V6 engine with eTorque mild hybrid technology, an automatic transmission, and Selec-Trac full-time 4WD. Despite its rugged appeal, the Wrangler's interior was basic, with durable cloth seats and limited storage. The driving experience was unique, offering an immersive connection with the environment, but it required acceptance of its rough ride and frequent fuel stops. The Wrangler was about adventure and freedom, appealing to those who valued exploration over comfort.

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, producing 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. It featured an eight-speed sport automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive AWD system. The eBoost mild-hybrid technology added a 48-volt starter/generator and battery, enhancing fuel economy and responsiveness. Despite a slight drop in EPA ratings to 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, the X7 delivered ample power, accelerating to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The Dynamic Handling Package improved maneuverability and stability, though the SUV's weight and size were noticeable on winding roads.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide was equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine with eTorque mild-hybrid electrification, generating 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. It came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Selec-Trac full-time 4WD. The EPA rated it at 21 mpg combined, but real-world testing showed an average of 16.8 mpg. The Wrangler's driving experience was characterized by its loud cabin, vague steering, and rough ride, but it offered a unique and engaging connection with the environment. The Wrangler was designed for off-road adventures, providing a sense of freedom and exploration.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

The 2021 BMW X7 offered a luxurious interior with features like heated and ventilated seats, premium leather, and a five-zone climate control system. Front-seat comfort was exceptional, and the second-row captain's chairs were equally comfortable. The third-row seat was surprisingly accommodating for adults, though accessing it required some maneuvering. The X7 provided 48.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row folded and 90.4 cubic feet with the second row down, though these figures were not class-leading.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide's raised suspension made entry and exit challenging, especially for shorter individuals. The interior featured durable cloth seats and a mix of plastic and rubber materials. Visibility varied, with some areas offering excellent views and others being obstructed. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry challenges but found comfortable accommodations once inside. Cargo space was 31.7 cubic feet behind the rear seat, expanding to 72.4 cubic feet with the seat folded. The Wrangler's design prioritized off-road capability over interior refinement.

Technology

2022 Jeep Wrangler

The 2021 BMW X7 featured Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation and an iDrive 7.0 infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display. It included Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM 360L, and Connected Package Pro with real-time traffic and parking information. The system offered wireless charging, voice recognition, and gesture control, though the latter was inconsistent. The head-up display was difficult to see with polarized sunglasses, but overall, the technology was user-friendly and comprehensive.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide, based on the Sport S trim, had a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. While it lacked the optional Uconnect 8.4 system with satellite radio and navigation, the basic setup met most needs. The Wrangler included remote engine start, satellite radio, and a passive keyless entry system. The Cold Weather Group added heated seats and a steering wheel, enhancing comfort during open-air driving.

Safety

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2/10

The 2021 BMW X7 came standard with a suite of safety technologies, with additional features available in the Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package. The package included evasive-steering assist, traffic-jam assist, and lane-control assist, among others. The X7's ADAS was effective, though it occasionally struggled with lane maintenance and automated lane changes. The Parking Assistance Package added semi-automated parking and a surround-view camera.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide included the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, offering blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision warning. However, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were subpar, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS. The Wrangler's safety features were optional, and its design required cautious driving.
