2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar Reviews Summary

The original Land Rover Range Rover revolutionized the SUV game by combining off-road capability with a modicum of civility. Land Rover is now trying to milk that success by creating a “family” of Range Rover models, including some with more car-like styling and character.

That’s where the Land Rover Range Rover Velar comes in. Launched for the 2018 model year, it sits above the Range Rover Evoque, but below the Range Rover Sport, in size and price (the traditional Range Rover remains the brand’s flagship). Land Rover chose the Velar name as a nod to the original 1969 Range Rover prototypes, which were badged Velar to hide their origin.

The main change for the 2020 model year is the addition of an SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition to the lineup. It’s a one-year-only special that packs a V8 engine instead of the usual V6 or turbo-four. This is the version we tested as, aside from what’s under the hood, it is representative of other Velar models.

2020 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

It’s hard to find a car with better brand recognition than Jeep's Wrangler. It is an American 4x4 icon, with military roots and millions of miles of trails traversed. As awesome as Jeeps are, they require one caveat: They are not very efficient. This has become more glaring as the rest of the industry works to improve fuel economy. Jeep has made incremental improvements in the past several years, with mild hybrids and turbocharged 4-cylinder engines, but these setups still don‘t get much better than V8-level fuel economy.

So for 2020, Jeep offers a new diesel engine in the Wrangler Unlimited. Read on to learn if this new engine actually improves the Wrangler’s fuel economy. And if not, does the Wrangler Unlimited do other things well enough to make up for its fuel thirstiness?

Look and feel

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

9/10

2020 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar was a stylish addition to the Range Rover family, positioned between the compact Evoque and the larger Range Rover. Its design was neither too sleek nor too boxy, featuring a low roof and steeply-raked windshield that gave it a unique profile. The Velar maintained its SUV identity with a broad front end and short overhangs, which improved its off-road capabilities. The SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition added sportier elements like larger air intakes and quad exhaust tips, enhancing its aggressive look. Inside, the Velar boasted high-quality leather and metal trim, creating a luxurious, cockpit-like feel that was more suited to urban environments than rugged terrains.

In contrast, the 2020 Jeep Wrangler was instantly recognizable with its circular headlights, seven-slat grille, and boxy styling. It offered a rugged, industrial look with exposed hinges and bolts, and the option to fold down the windshield and remove the doors. The Wrangler's interior embraced a retro style with circular vents and gauges, focusing on utility over luxury. The Wrangler Unlimited, with its four-door configuration, was a popular choice, offering various trims like the Sport, Sahara, and Rubicon, each catering to different preferences. The Rubicon stood out with its off-road prowess, featuring a lifted suspension and mud-terrain tires, while the Sahara provided a more comfort-oriented experience.

Performance

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar introduced a significant performance upgrade with the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, featuring a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine producing 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive, allowed the Velar to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 177 mph. Despite these impressive figures, the Velar's performance was not as dominant as some competitors. The Dynamic Edition also included enhancements like bigger brakes and retuned suspension, but it didn't fully transform the Velar into a performance SUV. The rest of the Velar lineup offered a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine with 247 hp, and a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 with either 340 hp or 380 hp, all paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. The Velar also featured off-road tech like the Terrain Response system and All-Terrain Progress Control, although its single-speed transfer case limited its off-road capabilities.

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited offered a range of engine options, starting with a 3.6-liter V6 producing 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, available with a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic transmission. A turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque was also available. New for 2020 was a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel engine, delivering 260 hp and an impressive 442 lb-ft of torque, providing excellent low-speed performance. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were unmatched, with features like locking differentials and a disconnecting front sway bar. However, its on-road experience was less refined, with road noise and a rough ride. The diesel engine offered better fuel economy, with 22 mpg city, 29 highway, and 25 combined, but came with a higher price tag and limited availability of diesel fuel.

Form and function

2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar

2020 Jeep Wrangler

6/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar was positioned between small and midsize luxury SUVs, offering a unique size that felt larger on the road but didn't translate to more interior space. It had 15.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up and 48.9 cubic feet with them folded. The Velar's avant-garde styling, with its chopped roof, limited headroom and visibility, creating a somewhat claustrophobic interior. The cockpit-like front seating area added to the cramped feeling, although the tall center console was easily accessible. The Velar's towing capacity was respectable, with the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition and V6 models capable of towing 5,511 pounds, while the base four-cylinder model could tow 5,291 pounds.

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, with its four-door configuration, offered a unique blend of ruggedness and versatility. The Wrangler's doors could be removed, and the windshield folded down, providing an open-air experience. The soft top could be retracted partially or fully, while the hardtop offered more protection from the elements. The Wrangler Unlimited had about 72 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear bench lowered, which was less than some less-capable SUVs. Despite its limited cargo space and comfort, the Wrangler excelled in off-road capabilities, making it a unique choice for adventure enthusiasts.

Technology

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar featured the InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, with dual 10.0-inch touchscreens, a WiFi hotspot, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility. The upper screen handled smartphone and media functions, while the lower screen managed vehicle settings and climate control. The system offered high-quality graphics but suffered from slow responses. Additional tech included a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a head-up display, and capacitive steering-wheel controls.

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler offered a range of infotainment options, starting with a basic 5-inch touchscreen on the Sport and Sport S trims. The Rubicon and Sahara came with a 7-inch touchscreen featuring Uconnect, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. An 8.4-inch Uconnect system was available on the Sahara and Rubicon, adding navigation, HD Radio, and real-time updates. This package also included a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot and an Alpine premium audio system, providing excellent sound quality even at highway speeds.

Safety

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover Velar lacked safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, as low-volume luxury vehicles were not prioritized for crash testing. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and front and rear parking aids. Adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring were available as part of an option package. However, Land Rover's driver-assist tech offerings were less sophisticated compared to competitors.

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler came with standard safety features like airbags, electronic roll mitigation, and a backup camera. Optional safety packages added rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-path detection. The Advanced Safety Group included adaptive cruise control and full-speed forward-collision warning, enhancing the Wrangler's safety features.
