2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2023 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II when the Willys-Overland company supplied the MB to the American troops. Fast forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts.

Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels like the Sport, High Altitude, Willys Sport, and Sahara don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a design that drew inspiration from its sedan counterpart, the G70, particularly above the belt-line. Its split-bar headlights and a distinctive chrome line that curved from behind the rear window were notable features that visually connected it to the G70. This chrome bar cleverly suggested a coupe-like SUV design without compromising versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a testament to luxury, with top-notch materials and excellent fit and finish. The interior design was both contemporary and classic, featuring climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that rose organically from the dash. The GV70's dash included a full touchscreen, a rotary dial, and button controls, offering a user-friendly interface. The physical rollers on the center console and steering wheel were a practical touch, enhancing the overall driving experience.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler exuded a rugged, no-nonsense design with its fourth-generation JL model. It featured a boxy, take-no-prisoners aesthetic, with options for a two-door or four-door configuration. The Wrangler's windshield could fold down, and it offered various top options for open-air exploration. Its design included wide fenders, Jeep's iconic seven-slot grille, round headlights, and old-school exterior hood latches. The tailgate swung out, and the rear glass lifted for easy cargo access. The Wrangler's interior was practical, with easy-to-clean floor mats and seats, a body-colored dash, chunky HVAC controls, and a manual transfer case shifter. While it lacked ambient lighting and massaging seats, it offered a straightforward and functional design.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a choice between two gas-powered engines and an electrified version. The 2.5T model featured a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.5T model boasted a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV70 Electrified used a 77.4-kWh battery pack, powering two electric motors for a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It offered a smooth and confident acceleration, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower for short bursts. The electric version had a range of 236 miles and supported DC fast charging, replenishing the battery from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler, known for its off-road prowess, offered a range of engine options. The standard Wrangler came with a V6 engine producing 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, or a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Torque enthusiasts could opt for the 3.0-liter Ecodiesel V6 with 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 featured a 6.4-liter V8 engine with 470 horsepower and torque, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler 4xe, a plug-in hybrid, combined two electric motors with a 17.3 kWh battery pack, offering 21 miles of all-electric range. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were enhanced by solid axles, optional differential lockers, and various off-road transfer cases.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with the seats in use, making it competitive in the compact luxury SUV segment. It featured a hands-free power liftgate, decently large cupholders in the center console, and a helpful tray with a retractable lid. While the front seats offered comfortable seating positions, the rear seats had tighter legroom, requiring front-row occupants to adjust their seats for rear passenger comfort. The rear bench could recline for added comfort.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's front seats were comfortable, but heated seats were only available in the 392 model or with a cold-weather package. The rear seat could fit three passengers in four-door models, but space was tight, and the small rear doors made entry and exit challenging. Storage for small items was limited, with a flat dash lacking cubbies and small glove box and center consoles. The Wrangler offered 72.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. The hard top could be removed in one piece, and the soft top was easy to remove, though the plastic rear window could be cumbersome in cold weather. The Sky One-Touch power soft top provided a convenient open-air experience.

Technology

2023 Genesis GV70

2023 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The touchscreen was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation. Genesis included helpful buttons in the center console and a rotary dial for scrolling and selecting, though its proximity to the vehicle's rotary shifter could cause confusion. The GV70 came equipped with four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Optional features included ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and the Genesis digital key.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler came standard with a 7-inch touchscreen running Jeep's Uconnect infotainment system, with an optional 8.4-inch screen. The touchscreen interface initially appeared complex, but it was intuitive once drivers became familiar with it. Jeep's off-road pages provided valuable information for off-road enthusiasts. The Wrangler included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a forward-facing camera for off-road trails, and four auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories. However, it lacked a digital key and over-the-air updates for vehicle performance.

Safety

2023 Genesis GV70

9/10

2023 Jeep Wrangler

6/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technology, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2.5T model's Advance Package added a blind-spot camera system, reverse automatic emergency braking, and a 360-degree parking camera system. The 3.5T model included these features in the Sport Advance package. The GV70 Electrified had most of these features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.

The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's safety features were limited, with only a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control as standard. Blind-spot monitoring, forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control were standard only on the top 392 model, while other trims required an option package. Lane-keeping assist was not offered. The Wrangler received mixed ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with some trims receiving poor headlight ratings and a rollover rating of 3 out of 5 stars.
