2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

2023 Genesis GV70

2024 Genesis GV80

The 2023 Genesis GV70 was a testament to the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Its design drew inspiration from the G70 compact luxury sedan, with split-bar headlights and a strong chrome line that elegantly curved from behind the rear window. This design element cleverly suggested a coupe-like SUV without sacrificing versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a showcase of luxury, featuring top-notch materials and an impeccable fit and finish. The interior design was both contemporary and classic, with climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that seamlessly rose from the dash. The GV70's dash featured a full touchscreen, complemented by a rotary dial and button controls on the center console, offering a tactile experience superior to touch capacitive controls.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80 exuded luxury with its Prestige Signature trim, featuring an Ultramarine Blue over Dune interior with diamond-stitched Nappa leather, a suede headliner, and metallic-finish accents. The exterior, however, was less striking, with dark chrome trim and 22-inch wheels that were nearly invisible due to the black paint. The GV80's interior was decadent, with ambient lighting, a 3D digital instrument cluster, and a wide touchscreen display underscoring its flagship status. Despite its luxurious appointments, the GV80's seats were less comfortable for long journeys, and the rear seats offered limited legroom. The GV80's cabin storage was commendable, and it provided ample cargo space, but the Prestige Signature's rear console height required caution when loading items.

Performance

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The GV70's turbo-four provided ample power for most driving situations, while the V6 catered to performance enthusiasts with its extra grunt and throaty engine note. The GV70's driving experience was a refined blend of comfort and sharp handling, making it suitable for both spirited driving and absorbing road imperfections. The Electrified GV70 featured a 77.4-kWh battery powering two electric motors, producing a combined 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower for short bursts. It offered a range of 236 miles and could fast charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 2.5T was equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine generating 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.5T model featured a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, with five driving modes available. The GV80 3.5T offered a rewarding driving experience, with swift acceleration and commendable grip from its P265/40R22 all-season tires. The adaptive damping suspension and larger front brakes contributed to its athletic performance, though the steering was unremarkable. The GV80's two-spoke steering wheel design provided comfort during long drives, and the SUV was capable of towing up to 6,000 pounds.

Form and function

2024 Genesis GV80

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 56.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 28.9 cubic feet with them in use, making it competitive in the compact luxury SUV segment. It featured a hands-free power liftgate, decently large cupholders in the center console, and a helpful tray with a retractable lid. The front seats were comfortable and easily adjustable, but rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to slide their seats forward. The rear bench could recline for added comfort.

In 2024, the Genesis GV80 3.5T Advanced was the only model with a third-row seat, while the Prestige Signature offered seating for four with second-row captain's chairs. The GV80's interior featured artificial, real, or premium leather, depending on the trim, with standard heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a power hands-free liftgate. Our test vehicle included a panoramic glass roof, triple-zone climate control, and ventilated front seats with massage programs. However, the seats were less comfortable for long trips, and rear legroom was limited. The GV80 offered 34.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and up to 84 cubic feet with the seats folded, though the Prestige Signature's rear console height required caution when loading items.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The touchscreen was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation. Genesis provided helpful buttons and a rotary dial for control, though its proximity to the rotary shifter could cause confusion. The GV70 included four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo system. Available features included ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and the Genesis digital key.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, with a round control dial on the center console for ease of use. The standard infotainment package included navigation, SiriusXM satellite radio, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The GV80 introduced a Wi-Fi hotspot for 2024, and wireless smartphone charging was standard. The Prestige Signature added wireless charging in the second row. The GV80's infotainment display was graphically pleasing, with a simple and intuitive user interface. The digital key system allowed smartphone access, and most trims featured a Lexicon premium sound system. The Prestige and Prestige Signature included a head-up display showing blind-spot warnings.

Safety

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2.5T's Advance Package added a blind-spot camera system, reverse automatic emergency braking, and a 360-degree parking camera system, while the 3.5T's Sport Advance package included these features. The Electrified GV70 had most driver-assistance features as standard, with the head-up display available in the Prestige trim.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 came with numerous advanced driving-assistance systems, such as a camera-based Blind-Spot View Monitor, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Highway Driving Assist (HDA). HDA combined adaptive cruise control with lane-centering and lane-change assist, working well in light or dense, slow-moving traffic. The Blind-Spot View Monitor displayed a video feed within the digital instrument panel, enhancing safety during lane changes. The Remote Smart Parking Assist system allowed the GV80 to park itself, even with the driver outside the vehicle. The GV80 received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though the frontal-impact test earned four stars for driver and passenger seating positions.
