2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Reviews Summary

Well, we say “finally.” In fact, the US market has only gone without the Land Cruiser for two years, but the fandom made it clear that was two years too many. The new stateside Land Cruiser is an all-new model for 2024. Its coming was presaged by the Lexus GX with which it shares a platform, but Toyota made sure that this midsize SUV falls squarely in its own segment.

Verdict: The new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is the latest in a spate of automotive reboots, and it just may be the best of them. The new Land Cruiser combines retro styling and excellent off-road capability with the latest in comfort and convenience and, of course, brand heritage. But Toyota may be relying too heavily on the revered nameplate to justify the price, particularly since it’s changed some of the fundamental characteristics of the model.

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

9/10

The 2023 Genesis GV80 presented a sophisticated and graceful exterior with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, embodying a stately presence at over 16 feet long. The Prestige trim featured 22-inch alloy wheels, enhancing its elegant appearance, especially with the matte Brunswick Green paint. The rear design mirrored the front with four-part taillamps above dual exhausts, and the hands-free liftgate maintained a boxy shape, adding to its elegance. Inside, the dark green quilted leather seats complemented the metal and matte wood trim, while the center console, with its three large dials, added a touch of luxury. The 14.5-inch infotainment screen, though slightly awkwardly placed, was a minor flaw in an otherwise spacious and luxurious interior.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, with its boxy J250 design and flat roof, paid homage to its iconic predecessors. Each of the three trims featured heritage details, such as the grille with "TOYOTA" spelled out, reminiscent of the 40 series, and lighting that echoed past models. The LED lighting and color-selectable fog lights on higher trims added a modern twist. The lowered beltline improved visibility, and the First Edition trim came with off-road gear like a roof rack and skid plate. Inside, the trims varied from cloth seats in the base model to real leather in the First Edition, with heated front seats and a heated steering wheel standard across all trims. The Premium Package added features like a moonroof and ventilated seats, enhancing comfort and capability.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

2024 Toyota Land Cruiser

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered all-wheel drive with a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, or a turbo 3.5-liter V6 with 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While not particularly quick, taking about five and a half seconds to reach sixty, the GV80 excelled in highway driving with smooth power delivery and shifts. Its electronically controlled suspension and active noise cancellation provided a quiet and comfortable ride.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, tested primarily on an off-road course, featured a hybrid powertrain with a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a 1.87-kWh battery pack, and a 48-hp electric motor, producing a total of 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. It came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive, with a two-speed transfer case for high and low range. The Multi-Terrain Select system, available on mid-tier and First Edition models, operated in both 4Hi and 4Lo. The Land Cruiser also included an automatic limited-slip differential and rear- and center-locking differentials, enhancing its off-road capabilities. The push-button disconnect for the front sway bar allowed for better articulation off-road, and the updated CRAWL control function provided silent, low-speed cruise control over challenging terrain.

Form and function

The 2023 Genesis GV80 compensated for its lack of driving excitement with luxury features like heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and ventilated seats. The Ergo Motion driver’s seat offered fatigue-reducing adjustments, and the Nappa leather seats were sumptuous. While a third row was available, its limited legroom made it suitable only for children. The GV80 featured Genesis puddle lamps, a proximity key, and a digital key. The tri-zone climate control and optional 21-speaker stereo system added to the comfort. With 34.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, expandable to 84 cubic feet, and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds, the GV80 offered ample utility.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, based on the Prado, had two rows of seating with headroom of 36.1 inches in the front and 35.3 in the back, and legroom of 33.0 inches front and 26.7 rear. The center console housed off-road feature controls, and the wireless charging pad was conveniently placed. The Premium Package included a center console cool box, standard on the First Edition. The cargo area, with a raised load floor and rubber mat, offered 37.5 cubic feet of space, a 120-volt AC outlet, and USB-C ports in higher trims.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen for infotainment, accompanied by a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster and a head-up display. While the infotainment screen was slightly out of reach, the dial offered a tactile experience, though navigating through icons was cumbersome. The system supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, albeit not wirelessly, and included wireless charging, USB ports, and outlets. The remote smart parking assist allowed the car to maneuver in and out of parking spaces autonomously, a standout feature.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser, equipped with the Multi-Terrain Monitor system on higher trims, utilized a 12.3-inch center touchscreen display, particularly useful off-road. The infotainment system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with USB-C ports for both front and rear passengers. The base model featured an 8-inch display and six-speaker sound system, while the middle trim offered a 10-speaker system with an optional upgrade to a 14-speaker JBL system. The Premium Package added a head-up display and digital rear-view mirror.

Safety

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was equipped with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver’s aids, including forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control. A unique feature was the video feed of the car’s blind spot displayed in the digital gauge cluster. Highway Drive Assist provided hands-on/eyes-up driving aid on approved highways. The GV80 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a Good rating for crashworthiness from the IIHS, though the headlights and LATCH system were rated Acceptable.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser had not been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA, but Toyota’s Safety Sense 3.0 suite was standard, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and Proactive Driving Assist. The Premium Package added lane-keep assist and front cross-traffic alert. While not rated, Toyota’s safety track record provided confidence in the Land Cruiser’s safety.
