2023 Ford F-150 Reviews Summary

This year, Ford expands the F-150 lineup yet again. The big news is the debut of the F-150 Raptor R, equipped with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine making 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. The new 2023 F-150 Raptor R also has exclusive R-tuned Fox live-valve shocks, standard 37-inch all-terrain tires, and a few other goodies to justify its six-figure price tag.

The other new version of the 2023 Ford F-150 is more accessible: the XLT Heritage Edition. It has two-tone paint, unique cloth seat inserts, and exclusive 75 Years interior details. That’s the subject of this review.

2023 GMC Sierra 1500 Reviews Summary

Take a step back and think about a full-size truck from the early 2000s. The nicest creature comforts included leather upholstery, an upgraded stereo, and, if you were lucky, heated seats. Today, nearly every luxury-car feature has found its way into high-end pickups. We’ve blown past heated leather seats; you can now get features like massaging seats in a full-size truck. The same brinksmanship that applies to pickup-truck capability now also applies to the luxury trims.

This is very evident in the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500. The Denali trim is what kicked off the idea of a “lux truck,” and it has been joined by the Ford F-150 Limited and Ram 1500 Limited. Those competitors deliver a higher grade of refinement than the Denali was providing. But upping the ante is a constant state in the truck market, and GMC now offers a Denali Ultimate trim that includes nearly every single option and package. So is the Denali Ultimate the new standard of luxury among full-size trucks?

Look and feel

The 2023 Ford F-150 presented an enduring design, with its familiar facade and an array of options to enhance its appearance. Customers were fond of the modular, almost utilitarian interior layout, which paired function with a straightforward aesthetic. The array of configurations and options allowed customers to tailor the vehicle extensively to their needs, from base models in the XL trim to the luxurious and high-performance options like the Raptor R. This adaptability made it appealing to a broad spectrum of buyers.

On the other hand, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500's exterior design kept up with its predecessor's imposing stance, further enhanced by a wider grille and modernized headlights. The interior redesign for the 2023 model revealed more drastic changes, aiming to blend the functionality of a truck with the comfort of SUVs, featuring a significantly larger screen and shifted layout which could feel overly intricate for traditional truck users. The choice of different cabin and cargo configurations similarly provided versatility, though the interior's modern twists were not universally appreciated.

Performance

8/10

The Ford F-150 boasted a robust twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 engine delivering 400 horsepower, combined with a capable 10-speed automatic transmission ensuring a responsive and smooth ride under various conditions. It showcased a notable maximum towing capacity of 14,000 pounds and a payload rating of up to 3,315 pounds, catering well to heavy-duty requirements. The performance was competent, although ride quality without load could feel inconsistent across different terrains.

Conversely, the GMC Sierra 1500 included more varied powertrain options, such as the Duramax 3.0-liter diesel and the potent 6.2-liter V8, offering a balance between efficiency and power. The Sierra’s poised handling and refined ride quality, particularly in the Denali Ultimate trim, highlighted its capability both on highways and off-road settings. Despite the impressive performance credentials, its towing and payload capacities slightly trailed behind those of the F-150, with a maximum towing capacity of 13,200 pounds when optimally equipped.

Interior space utilization in the F-150 was thoughtful, with ample storage options and comfortable seating arrangements that could be enhanced with optional packages for better functionality and ease of use during long drives. The cargo bed was practical too, although accessing it could be challenging without additional steps.

The Sierra 1500’s cabin offered expansive storage solutions and innovative tailgate features like the MultiPro tailgate, adding to its utility. The interior was roomy, especially in the crew cab configuration, offering substantial legroom and storage. Both trucks provided versatile and practical solutions to cargo and passenger demands, yet Sierra edged out slightly with its more innovative tailgate and slightly superior interior configuration for utility.

Ford’s F-150 featured the Sync 4 system, with a 12-inch touchscreen and numerous functionalities enhanced by over-the-air updates. It supported a variety of connectivity features that were intuitive and useful for regular users. The inclusion of the Pro Power Onboard system added a unique touch, allowing the use of the truck as a mobile power source.

The Sierra 1500 incorporated a newer infotainment system with a 13.4-inch touchscreen in higher trims, delivering a rich feature set and seamless integration of Google-connected apps. This system, while robust, might feel a bit overwhelming but provided state-of-the-art connectivity and utility, especially for tech-savvy users.

Safety technology in the F-150 was comprehensive, with Ford’s Co-Pilot360 providing a vast suite of ADAS features that enhanced driver confidence and safety. The truck maintained exemplary scores in both IIHS and NHTSA testing, reflecting its solid safety credentials.

The Sierra 1500 was similarly equipped with a suite of safety technologies, including GM’s Super Cruise in higher trims, which offered hands-free driving capabilities that set it apart in tech-forward safety advancements. However, it relied more heavily on optional upgrades for full access to safety features.
