2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Reviews Summary

The GMC Sierra 1500 light-duty pickup has been around since 1999 but has seemingly lived in the shadow of its identical twin, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ever since. This is despite the fact that GMC is marketed as the premium alternative. Sales tell a different story, though, with the everyman Silverado moving twice as many units last year as the Sierra.

The GMC Sierra receives a significant makeover for 2022. With a bolder exterior design, a more lavish interior, standard high-end technology, and increased utility, the new Sierra also further elevates the GMC brand with its new high-grade Denali Ultimate and off-road-tuned AT4X models.

2023 GMC Canyon Reviews Summary

2023 marks the third generation of GMC's midsize pickup truck. The first-generation Canyon arrived for the 2004 model year as a replacement for the compact GMC Sonoma, and after a short hiatus a second-generation Canyon was introduced as a 2015 model. Throughout, the Canyon has been a twin of the Chevrolet Colorado, with only a few differences to distinguish the ostensibly upscale GMC from its working-class sibling. That changes for 2023.

The new Canyon is once again based on the Colorado, sharing the Chevy's body-on-frame platform, powertrain, and tech features. This time around, though, the Canyon is further distinguished from the Colorado by skipping some of the Chevy's entry-level features. That will raise the out-the-door price of a 2023 Canyon, but it's in keeping with the truck's positioning above the Colorado.

The Canyon is once again available in the base Elevation, luxury Denali, and off-road-oriented AT4 grades familiar to owners of the outgoing model. For 2023, GMC also adds a Canyon AT4X model that dials up the off-road capability. We drove it, as well as the Elevation and AT4 models, to see if this redesign is really an improvement.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 was all about making a strong impression with its introduction of the Denali Ultimate and AT4X variants. These new trims expanded upon the already luxurious Denali and rugged AT4 trims, respectively. The Sierra was available in a total of eight trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, Denali, AT4X, and Denali Ultimate. Even though its dimensions had remained unchanged, its updated grille, front fascia, and split-C headlight design gave it a more intimidating, wider appearance. Especially on the Denali trims, the grille featured intricate “tri-linear” chrome patterns on the Denali and dark-colored "Vader bars" on the Denali Ultimate, exuding both an extravagant and tough vibe.

Meanwhile, the 2023 GMC Canyon aimed to stand out with an aggressive redesign. Its front fascia, featuring scrunched-up headlights and a prominent lip on the front bumper, gave the Canyon a fierce, punchy look. The body sides with bulging creases hinted at tensed muscles, underscoring its ruggedness. This model shared most of its dimensions with the redesigned Chevy Colorado, and all Canyon models benefited from the "Ultra Wide Track" stance and a standard factory lift kit. While the standard trims like Elevation, AT4, and Denali had a two-inch lift, the AT4X boasted a three-inch lift offering 10.7 inches of ground clearance, enhancing its aggressive persona.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 offered a range of powertrains and drivetrains, making it highly customizable. It featured four engine options: a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six with 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, a 5.3-liter V8 making 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, and a 6.2-liter V8 churning out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. Depending on the engine choice, the Sierra could be paired with either an eight-speed or a 10-speed automatic transmission. Notable towing figures included a maximum trailering rating of 13,200 pounds for certain 2WD turbo-diesel models.

By contrast, the 2023 GMC Canyon streamlined its engine offerings to a single 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, delivering the same 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque across all trims, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While this engine had been strong enough for its larger Sierra sibling, it certainly provided ample power for the midsize Canyon. Tow ratings for the Canyon topped at 7,700 pounds for the Elevation, AT4, and Denali trims, and dipped to 6,000 pounds for the AT4X. The AT4X trim offered serious off-roading capabilities with its front and rear electronic lockers, skid plates, and 33-inch mud-terrain tires.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 excelled in both roominess and cargo capacity, particularly in its crew cab form, which offered 43.4 inches of rear legroom. Its short bed was best-in-class for cargo capacity. Interior amenities varied by trim, with the Denali Ultimate offering the epitome of luxury through materials like full-grain leather, open-pore wood trim, and microsuede touches. Storage options included numerous nooks and compartments throughout the cabin.

Conversely, the 2023 GMC Canyon offered a single crew cab configuration with a 5.2-foot bed, aligning it closely with its midsize competitors. It provided generous first-row legroom, leading its class alongside the Colorado. The Canyon's new MultiStow tailgate featured a waterproof storage compartment, adding versatility. However, it fell short on offering some of the more luxurious features found in other trucks such as a standard telescoping steering wheel or power-adjustable front seats.

In 2022, the GMC Sierra 1500 came with enhanced tech features including a 12.3-inch digital driver information display and a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen with Google Built-In. It supported both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, with three years of complimentary service on the AT4 and Denali trims. Optional tech included a 15-inch multicolor head-up display and a 12-speaker Bose surround-sound system.

The 2023 GMC Canyon leaned heavily into tech with an 11.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an 8 to 11-inch digital instrument cluster, depending on the trim. Higher trims featured a 6.3-inch head-up display and wireless phone charging. Its system offered rich graphics and smooth integration of Google apps for navigation and other core functionalities.

For 2022, the GMC Sierra 1500 featured GM’s Super Cruise, a Level 2 semi-autonomous driving system available only on the Denali Ultimate trim. Standard safety features under the GMC Pro Safety suite included forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane-keep assist, and IntelliBeam headlights. However, its crash safety ratings varied, showing room for improvement.
