2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty vs 2022 GMC Canyon

The 2022 GMC Canyon, which had been around since the 2015 model year, boasted a premium look and feel, especially in the luxury-oriented Denali trim. This version featured a unique chrome grille, 20-inch diamond-cut machined alloy wheels, five-inch chrome assist steps, an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation, heated and ventilated perforated front leather seats, open-pore Ash wood trim, and a Bose premium audio system. Even the rugged AT4 off-road version came with premium features like a black chrome grille, LED signature lighting, unique 17-inch wheels, and premium heated leather front seats with Kalahari accents. The cabin of the AT4 was inviting and luxurious, while the exterior exuded a bold, capable look.

In contrast, the 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty underwent a visual evolution rather than a revolution. The trims ranged from the work-oriented XL to the luxurious Limited. The XL trim included basic comforts like 17-inch wheels, vinyl upholstery, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Lariat trim introduced modern comforts such as leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, a 12-inch touchscreen, and a heated steering wheel. The King Ranch trim, which we tested, featured 20-inch alloy wheels, two-tone paint, and a luxurious interior with two-tone brown leather and an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system. The Platinum and Limited trims offered even more luxury and advanced features.

The 2022 GMC Canyon offered three powertrains: a 200-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 308-hp 3.6-liter V6, and a 181-hp 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine with 369 pound-feet of torque. The latter two engines had a maximum tow rating of 7,700 pounds with the available Trailering package. Rear-wheel drive was standard, with four-wheel drive available on all trims. The V6 engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, provided abundant power and smooth shifts. The AT4's off-road capabilities were enhanced by features like 31-inch Wrangler Duratrac tires, an Autotrac two-speed electronic transfer case, and hill-descent control.

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty offered a range of powerful engines, starting with a 6.8-liter gas V8 producing 400 horsepower and 445 pound-feet of torque. A 7.3-liter V8 option delivered 430 horsepower and 485 lb-ft of torque. The 6.7-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8 produced 475 horsepower and 1,050 lb-ft of torque, with a high-output version offering 500 horsepower and 1,200 lb-ft of torque. All engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, providing smooth power delivery. The F-250's towing capacity maxed at 22,000 pounds with the turbodiesel engines. Features like Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and onboard scales made towing easier and more efficient.

The 2022 GMC Canyon was available with an extended cab and a 6'2" bed or a crew cab with either a 5'2" or 6'2" bed. The crew cab offered ample space for rear-seat passengers, while the extended cab's back seat was less spacious. The rear folding bench seat provided additional storage options. The Canyon's crossover SUV-like seat height made entry and exit easy. The AT4's taller ride height improved visibility, and features like a rearview camera and rear park assist made maneuvering easier. The cargo bed with two-tier loading and 13 tie-down points enhanced utility.

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty was offered in regular cab, SuperCab, and Super Crew configurations, with either a 6.75-foot or 8-foot bed. The SuperCab's rear-hinged clamshell doors provided a wide opening but required the front doors to be open. Our test model featured a Warn winch and a soft-opening tailgate. Bed steps and grip handles made accessing the bed easier. Inside, the F-250 offered numerous cupholders, a massive center storage bin, dual glove boxes, and ample door storage. The Super Crew's rear seats folded up to create a large cargo area.

The 2022 GMC Canyon's base Elevation Standard trim included a 7-inch color touchscreen infotainment system. The Elevation trim added an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The AT4 trim included a wireless smartphone charging pad, while the Denali trim added navigation and a high-definition rearview camera. Available tech included Amazon Alexa Built-In, SiriusXM satellite radio, a WiFi hotspot, and OnStar telematics. Our AT4 test model featured the optional GMC infotainment system with navigation, an 8-inch touchscreen, voice recognition, and a Bose premium audio system.

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty's base infotainment system included an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Our test model featured a larger 12-inch screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen's logical control layout and redundant dials for radio and climate controls made it user-friendly. The F-250 also offered multiple USB ports, a wall-style power outlet, and wireless device charging. The navigation system included Trailer Navigation, which optimized routes based on trailer weight and dimensions.

The 2022 GMC Canyon's base Elevation Standard trim lacked advanced driver aids but included tire-fill alert and the Teen Driver system. The Driver Alert package, available on the Elevation and AT4 and standard on the Denali, included forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and rear parking assistance. However, features like adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking were not available. The Canyon earned four out of five stars for overall crash protection from the NHTSA and received mixed ratings from the IIHS.

The 2023 Ford F-250 Super Duty's XLT trim and above came with the Ford CoPilot 360 suite of driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane centering assist, traffic sign recognition, and a 360-degree parking camera system. Our test model featured dual-tier power-adjustable and power-telescoping trailer mirrors, trailer blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera for when the tailgate was lowered. Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS had crash-tested the F-250.
