The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 retained its robust, handsome appearance with subtle yet significant updates from its prior model. The expanded grille and refined headlights accentuated its wide, assertive stance, enhancing its presence as a full-size truck. Although the design adjustments were somewhat conservative, they refined what was already an aesthetically appealing vehicle.

However, while the exterior refresh was modest, the interior underwent a more radical transformation. GMC's shift to a more car-like cabin in the Sierra 1500 divided opinions, primarily due to the introduction of a large, central screen that replaced the simpler, more traditional layout. This might deter those who prefer straightforward, utilitarian interiors in their work trucks.

Trim levels expanded in sophistication and comfort from the base Pro to the luxurious Denali Ultimate, each offering a gradual enhancement in amenities and technology. The interior of the Denali Ultimate, notably, bordered on the decadent, with features such as a Kicker sound system, massaging seats, and bespoke wooden inlays that provided an almost bespoke level of refinement.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma, by contrast, maintained its rugged, utilitarian charm. The midsize pickup avoided appearing diminutive despite its shorter dimensions compared to full-size competitors like the GMC Sierra 1500. Its upright grille and pronounced bed profile contributed to a strong, confident appearance that belied its smaller size.

While Toyota offered the Tacoma in numerous trims, it demonstrated versatility and a clear focus on both functionality and daily drivability. Each version from the base SR to the trail-ready TRD Pro exhibited thoughtful adjustments to styling and utility aimed at different user needs. The vibrant, attention-grabbing TRD Pro, in its bright Solar Octane paint, made a distinctive impression that was both sporty and functional.

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 offered a range of powertrains, spearheaded by its 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine yielding a robust 310 horsepower, and went all the way up to a 6.2-liter V8 that delivered a potent 420 horsepower. This array provided ample choice for power and efficiency, accommodating diverse buyer preferences from fuel-efficient rides to powerful, heavy-duty tasks. Its towing and payload capacities were impressive, particularly with the diesel engine option, reinforcing the Sierra 1500's credentials as a highly capable full-size pickup able to handle substantial hauling requirements.

In contrast, the 2023 Toyota Tacoma lagged slightly in engine performance. Its base 2.7-liter engine produced just 159 horsepower, which was less powerful and efficient compared to its more robust 3.5-liter V6 counterpart, which offered 278 horsepower. This made the Tacoma less appealing in terms of raw power and towing capability. However, the TRD Pro version, equipped with 4WD and an array of off-road features, showcased the vehicle’s dual character as both an urban cruiser and a competent off-road adventurer.

The GMC Sierra 1500 demonstrated exceptional versatility in configurations, ranging from regular cab setups to more spacious crew cab options. The crew cab version we explored featured expansive interior space, a functional MultiPro tailgate, and extensive in-bed utility offerings that reinforced its practicality for both work-related and personal usage. The user-friendly design extended to the interior storage solutions, optimizing space and utility.

Toyota’s Tacoma, while smaller, was no less thought-out. The access cab version provided basic accommodation and storage suitable for less frequent passenger use, while the double cab variant offered considerably more passenger comfort and easier access. However, interior space, especially in the rear seats, was noticeably more cramped compared to the roomier Sierra 1500.

Technologically, the GMC Sierra 1500 outfitted its cabins with advanced features geared towards a refined user experience. It offered a larger standard touchscreen and a suite of connected services, including Google apps and advanced trailering apps which, despite some intrusiveness, added considerable value for tech-savvy users or those needing detailed vehicle monitoring.

The Tacoma, while functional, did not feature cutting-edge technology. Its infotainment system, though adequate with standard smartphone integration and satellite radio, felt outdated when compared to the offerings in Sierra 1500 or rivals in the segment.

GMC equipped the Sierra 1500 with a comprehensive suite of safety features, from basic driving assists to advanced options available in higher trims like the Denali Ultimate. Innovations such as the rear-camera mirror and GM’s Super Cruise added layers of safety and convenience that enhanced driver confidence.

The Tacoma, though it included Toyota's Safety Sense, did not match GMC in terms of advanced features and lacked some of the additional aids that might be expected in this class. Although offering essential safety functionality, it did not venture beyond these to incorporate newer, more advanced systems seen in competitors.
