2022 RAM 1500 Reviews Summary

In 2021, the Ram pickup line overtook the Chevrolet Silverado as the second-best-selling truck in America. That’s the headline. The nuance is that sales figures include the previous-generation version, now sold as the Ram 1500 Classic, which remains in production four years after its should have died. Also, General Motors suffered significant production disruptions due to the ongoing chip shortage. Nevertheless, and especially in light of the redesigned Toyota Tundra arriving in the market, we thought it would be good to revisit the most popular of the Ram trucks, the 2022 Ram 1500.

2023 Ford F-150 Reviews Summary

This year, Ford expands the F-150 lineup yet again. The big news is the debut of the F-150 Raptor R, equipped with a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine making 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. The new 2023 F-150 Raptor R also has exclusive R-tuned Fox live-valve shocks, standard 37-inch all-terrain tires, and a few other goodies to justify its six-figure price tag.

The other new version of the 2023 Ford F-150 is more accessible: the XLT Heritage Edition. It has two-tone paint, unique cloth seat inserts, and exclusive 75 Years interior details. That’s the subject of this review.

2022 RAM 1500

10/10

2023 Ford F-150

7/10

The 2022 RAM 1500 presented itself as a refined blend of ruggedness and luxury. With options spanning from the basic Tradesman to the robust TRX, buyers had plenty to choose from, ensuring a fit for various needs and aesthetics. The availability of various cab styles and bed lengths added to its appeal, making it a flexible choice for consumers. The introduction of appearance packages, including the striking Limited 10th Anniversary Edition, only heightened its allure, offering unique design elements like Indigo and Sea Salt leather upholstery and a suede headliner which underscored its luxury truck credentials.

Conversely, the 2023 Ford F-150 maintained its classic styling that has become a hallmark of reliability and familiarity in the full-size truck segment. Ranging from the practical XL to the high-performance Raptor, the F-150's broad lineup ensured it met the diverse needs of its buyers. While it may not have broken new ground in design, it provided a sense of solidity and straightforward functionality, which remained a key selling point. Notably, its interior was modular and utilitarian, focusing less on luxury and more on practicality and durability, suitable for both work and leisure.

Performance

2022 RAM 1500

9/10

2023 Ford F-150

8/10

The 2022 RAM 1500 offered a range of engines including a mild-hybrid V6, a hearty 5.7-liter V8, and a turbocharged diesel V6, the latter impressing with its balance of power and efficiency, delivering 260 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. This configuration not only supported commendable towing capacities but also demonstrated remarkable fuel economy, which was further enhanced by the model's aerodynamic enhancements like the tri-fold tonneau cover. RAM's exclusive air suspension option continued to set it apart, offering a driving experience that was both supremely comfortable and unexpectedly nimble in varied driving scenarios.

In contrast, the 2023 Ford F-150’s twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine outputting 400 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque provided vigorous performance that belied its less aggressive styling. Towing capabilities exceeded those of the RAM, reaching up to 14,000 pounds, showcasing the F-150 as a workhorse ready for substantial hauling tasks. However, ride quality without a load was noted as less refined compared to the RAM, suggesting potential compromise in daily driving comfort.

Form and function

2023 Ford F-150

8/10

Interior space and functionality were where the 2022 RAM 1500 truly shined. The test truck came loaded with thoughtful features including power deploying running boards, heated and ventilated seats across both rows, and innovative storage solutions throughout the cabin. The multi-function tailgate and the optional RamBox provided unmatched utility for storing and accessing cargo.

The 2023 F-150 focused squarely on utility but in a more traditional sense. Comfortable seating for five and an array of storage solutions embodied Ford’s commitment to practicality. The optional Pro Power Onboard system in the test truck underscored its readiness for on-site work, though the absence of certain amenities like an integrated tailgate step indicated potential oversights in maximizing utility.

Technology

Technology in the 2022 RAM 1500 centered around the new Uconnect 5 system, offering a seamless interface with a large 12-inch touchscreen, enhanced connectivity, and premium sound. This system, combined with driver-assist technologies that included trailer-specific innovations, provided a technologically sophisticated environment.

Ford's F-150 equipped with Sync 4 also delivered a robust technology suite capable of over-the-air updates, ensuring continuous improvement. The system matched RAM’s offerings in many respects, with excellent voice recognition and the addition of driving aids like the Pro Trailer Backup Assist enhancing its practical tech credentials.
