2023 GMC Sierra 1500 vs 2024 Ford F-150

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 received a styling update in 2022, featuring a wider, more imposing grille and updated headlights. While these changes were subtle, they maintained the truck's already sharp appearance. The interior, however, saw a significant departure from its predecessor, with a large screen and a more complex layout. This shift aimed to align the Sierra with the trend of making truck cabins more like daily driver cars and SUVs. The new infotainment system moved controls further down the dash but retained traditional climate controls, a conventional volume dial, and a home button.

The 2024 Ford F-150 offered a plethora of configurations and trim levels, including regular two-door cabs, SuperCrew four-door cabs, and smaller four-door Super Cabs. The King Ranch trim stood out for its luxurious features, such as heated and ventilated front leather seats, heated rear seats, wood trim, and ambient lighting. Despite some mid-trim models having cheap-looking surfaces, the F-150 retained chunky buttons and knobs for easy use, even with gloves on. The front fascia of higher trims like the Lariat and Platinum received minor tweaks, while the Tremor featured more noticeable changes, including orange accents and unique running boards.

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 offered four powertrain options. The base model came with a 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. The optional 3.0-liter Duramax turbocharged inline-six diesel engine delivered 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque. Two gas V8 options were also available: a 5.3-liter V8 with 355 hp and 383 lb-ft, and a 6.2-liter V8 with 420 hp and 460 lb-ft. The gas four-cylinder engine was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while all other engines came with a 10-speed automatic. The Sierra had a towing capacity of up to 13,200 pounds and a maximum payload capacity of 2,240 pounds.

The 2024 Ford F-150 featured a standard turbocharged 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, but the PowerBoost Hybrid was a standout with its 3.5-liter turbo V6 hybrid engine producing 430 horsepower and 570 pound-feet of torque. The Tremor variant came with a 5.0-liter V8 engine delivering 400 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, while the Raptor R boasted a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 with 720 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. The 10-speed automatic transmission performed seamlessly across all engine options. The F-150's towing capacity reached up to 13,500 pounds, with a maximum payload of 2,445 pounds. The Tremor and Raptor R variants excelled in off-road capabilities, with features like Trail Turn Assist and Trail Control technology.

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 offered various cab and bed configurations, including regular cab with a standard-size bed, single cab with a long bed, double cab with a standard bed, and crew cab with short or standard beds. Our test model, a crew cab with a short bed, provided ample cabin space and storage options. The MultiPro tailgate offered multiple configurations, including a bed step-up and fold-out workstation. Bed steps cut into the rear bumper corners provided easy access without moving parts.

The 2024 Ford F-150 introduced the Pro Access tailgate, which could flip down like a traditional gate or swing open for easier bed access. The tailgate featured a 20/60/20 split and could stop at various angles to avoid hitting the trailer jack. The F-150 also offered Pro Power Assist, with gas-powered trucks providing a 2.0-kW onboard generator and the PowerBoost hybrid producing 2.4 kW of power. The maximum towing capacity was 13,500 pounds, while the payload capacity reached 2,445 pounds. The hybrid engine had a towing rating of 11,200 pounds and a payload of 1,755 pounds.

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 came standard with a 7-inch touchscreen and a carryover infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims received a 13.4-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Google-connected apps, and trailering status apps. The Denali Ultimate trim included a wireless charging pad, USB-A and USB-C ports, and a wall-style power outlet. All trims except the base Pro featured a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel and a head-up display.

The 2024 Ford F-150 featured a 12-inch touchscreen running SYNC 4, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite radio, a 5G LTE wireless hotspot, and wireless charging. A 12-inch reconfigurable digital gauge cluster was standard, and an available head-up display provided information on towing, off-roading, and driving assistance. Ford Stolen Vehicle Services offered theft detection and recovery through the FordPass app. The F-150 also included Pro Trailer Backup Assist, Smart Hitch tech, and an Onboard Scale for payload weight.

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 came standard with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and GM’s Teen Driver system. Higher trims offered additional features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, and GM’s Super Cruise driver assist system. The rear-vision camera mirror and surround-view camera system enhanced visibility and parking maneuverability.

The 2024 Ford F-150 included the Ford CoPilot 360 suite, featuring automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, and cross traffic alert. Higher trims offered a 360-degree camera, Exit Warning, and the Blue Cruise hands-free driving-assist system. The NHTSA awarded the F-150 an overall safety rating of five stars, while the IIHS gave it top scores in driver- and passenger-side crashworthiness. However, the F-150 received lower ratings for rear-seat passenger safety and seatbelt reminders.
