2019 Toyota Tundra Reviews Summary

When it comes to pickups, simplicity used to be king. Leaf-spring suspensions, pushrod V8s, and no-nonsense interiors were staples of the game. But today, pickups include all sorts of sophisticated features, from car suspensions and twin-turbocharged engines to all the luxury and technology you’d expect from a luxury import. But the Toyota Tundra has refused to follow the herd, offering the tried-and-true formula that’s been a proven winner for decades. For some, that simplicity is a turnoff. But for others, it's exactly what’s missing from today’s truck offerings. For 2019, the TRD Pro trim returns, giving the Tundra a revised suspension, gorgeous new BBS wheels, and a price tag inflated by nearly $4,000.

2020 RAM 1500 Reviews Summary

A full redesign in 2019 left a significant bit of tech on the table for the increasingly popular Ram 1500: the EcoDiesel 3.0-liter engine. Ram was once the only option for a half-ton diesel pickup, but emissions certification problems resulted in Ram pulling the diesel engine a few years ago. The engineers at Ram have been hard at work updating it ever since. Although the EcoDiesel wasn’t ready for 2019, it’s now available to any 2020 Ram 1500 trim, so it seems it was well worth the wait. With 80% new parts, the EcoDiesel's improvements to power, efficiency, and delivery all mean that Ram is fighting hard to change minds about America’s least-loved engine type.

Look and feel

2019 Toyota Tundra

7/10

2020 RAM 1500

7/10
CarGurus experts rate the look and feel of the 2019 Toyota Tundra at 7 out of 10 and the 2020 RAM 1500 at 8 out of 10. The Tundra, despite its rugged charm, suffers from an interior and technology that feel outdated. Its two V8 engines, though powerful, are seen as archaic by modern standards. However, Toyota's commitment to safety and dependability cannot be overlooked, offering an array of features starting from the base model upwards. The RAM 1500, conversely, combines functionality with luxury, starting with its impressive Tradesman trim and extending through to the luxurious Laramie Longhorn and Limited trims. It boasts a more contemporary design, both inside and out, with a wide range of available features that cater to both the utilitarian and the comfort-seeker.

Performance

2019 Toyota Tundra

6/10

2020 RAM 1500

7/10
In performance, the Tundra is rated at 6 out of 10, while the RAM 1500 earns a 7 out of 10. The Tundra's V8 options deliver robust power but lag behind in fuel efficiency and innovation compared to competitors. The TRD Pro trim stands out for off-road capability but still can't quite match the technology-packed offerings from rivals. The RAM 1500, with its V6 and V8 options, including a diesel and eTorque mild hybrid system, provides a blend of power, efficiency, and towing capability. The availability of the eTorque system on the V8 enhances performance without sacrificing fuel economy, making it a versatile choice for both daily driving and heavy lifting.
Form and function

2019 Toyota Tundra

6/10

2020 RAM 1500

8/10
In terms of form and function, the Tundra maintains a simplistic approach that appeals to those seeking straightforward utility without the need for extensive customization. As with any truck of this size, maneuverability can be a challenge in tight spaces. The RAM 1500 shines with its class-leading torque, superior towing capacity, and a comfortable interior that includes expansive storage options and luxurious features in higher trims. It does require precise specification to achieve its maximum towing capacity, highlighting a need for potential compromise between functionality and convenience.
Technology

2019 Toyota Tundra

5/10

2020 RAM 1500

7/10
Technology ratings diverge significantly, with the Tundra receiving a 5 out of 10 and the RAM 1500 a 7 out of 10. The Tundra's technology offerings are basic, with notable absences such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In contrast, the RAM 1500 shines with its advanced Uconnect system, optional 12-inch touchscreen, and thoughtful inclusions like ample charging ports, highlighting a more modern approach to truck tech.
Safety

2019 Toyota Tundra

7/10

2020 RAM 1500

9/10
Safety evaluations reveal a closer competition, with the Tundra scoring 7 out of 10 and the RAM 1500 leading at 9 out of 10. The Tundra offers a commendable suite of standard safety features but is hampered by aging technology and subpar crash test results. The RAM 1500 sets a benchmark with its safety ratings, including a Top Safety Pick Plus from IIHS for certain configurations, pointing to its emphasis on protective technologies and design.
