2019 RAM 1500 vs 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

The 2019 RAM 1500 showcased a well-considered design evolution, modernizing its large-truck aesthetics without stepping into the oversized territory perceived in some competitors such as the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The absence of the crosshair grille marked a significant departure for RAM, aiming to carve a distinct identity separate from the Dodge brand. Every trim level introduced subtly different grille designs, a testament to RAM's commitment to diversity in aesthetics. This design approach was particularly reflected in the smart layout of headlights that improved maneuverability through better sightlines.

The interior of the 2019 RAM 1500 further emphasized design maturity, featuring an elegantly contoured layout contrasting sharply with the Silverado’s more utilitarian cabin. Compared to the Silverado's somewhat dated and plastic-heavy inside, RAM offered a more refined environment with segmented zones for controls and a predominantly digital interface highlighted by their sizable touchscreen options.

The Silverado, however, stood out with its external customization options across various trims. In contrast to RAM’s approach of consistent elegance, Chevrolet opted for a more rugged differentiation among its models, from the basic work trucks to the high-end High Country and Trail Boss variants.

The RAM 1500's engines, particularly the 5.7-liter Hemi with optional eTorque, provided a smooth and powerful driving experience, with a max tow rating of 12,750 pounds when properly equipped. This was notably supplemented by the eTorque system, enhancing torque output significantly. The straight-line acceleration and handling suggested a vehicle less burdened by its mass, a desirable trait for a large pickup.

The Silverado wasn't far behind in the performance arena, especially with its offering of multiple engines like the potent 6.2-liter V8 on our LT Trail Boss test truck, generating 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with its Autotrac 4WD system, the Silverado delivered a robust performance across diverse terrains, although it sometimes exhibited less refined handling on paved roads compared to the RAM.

Fuel efficiency in real-world testing put both trucks at similar standings, with the RAM achieving slightly less than its EPA ratings and the Silverado performing just under its expected mileage, indicating a need for some real-world adjustments to official estimates.

Regarding utility, both trucks offered impressive payload and towing capabilities, with the Silverado slightly edging out at a maximum of 13,400 pounds tow rating compared with RAM’s 12,750 pounds, though this will vary significantly with configurations. The Silverado also boasted a large cargo box, which Chevrolet claimed to be more voluminous than its competitors due to its depth and high sides.

Interior storage and passenger comfort were focal points in both models. RAM excelled with innovative storage solutions like the Ram Box system and a well-thought-out cabin that featured widely opening rear doors and reclining rear seats. In contrast, Silverado’s interior was commodious, particularly in the Crew Cab configuration, and included convenient features like a power sliding rear window and ample in-seat storage, though it fell short on front passenger comfort due to non-adjustable seating configurations.

Technologically, each truck brought forward compelling arguments. The RAM boasted perhaps the most distinguished feature—the available 12-inch touchscreen, akin to high-end consumer electronics and an intuitive Uconnect system. This was complemented by physical buttons for commonly used controls, easing the use during driving.

Chevrolet’s Silverado maintained a competitive stance with a sufficiently functional infotainment system supported by Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. While the system was modern, it didn't captivate with the same flair as the RAM’s, offering a more traditional pickup experience technologically.
