2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Reviews SummaryWhen discussing heavy-duty pickups, it's easy to fixate on maximum towing and hauling capacities as the only things that matter. After all, the primary purpose of heavy-duty trucks is to carry and pull the heaviest loads possible. But with more consumers using these big trucks for work and play, there are other things to consider, like off-road ability, design, infotainment, trailering technology, and safety. That's a good thing for the GMC Sierra 2500HD.
2022 RAM 1500 Reviews SummaryIn 2021, the Ram pickup line overtook the Chevrolet Silverado as the second-best-selling truck in America. That’s the headline. The nuance is that sales figures include the previous-generation version, now sold as the Ram 1500 Classic, which remains in production four years after its should have died. Also, General Motors suffered significant production disruptions due to the ongoing chip shortage. Nevertheless, and especially in light of the redesigned Toyota Tundra arriving in the market, we thought it would be good to revisit the most popular of the Ram trucks, the 2022 Ram 1500.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD, redesigned for the 2020 model year, boasted a bold exterior with a tall hood, squared-off lines, and a massive grille, giving it a commanding presence from the front. While its exterior design was considered one of the better-looking among heavy-duty trucks, the interior fell short in material quality, especially in top trims, compared to competitors like the Ram 2500 and Ford F-250 Super Duty. Despite being spacious, the Sierra's cabin wasn't as roomy as the Ram 1500 and Ford Super Duty. The Sierra 2500HD offered five trim levels, each with distinct features, catering to different needs from fleet operators to luxury seekers. The AT4 trim, which we tested, was equipped with off-road features and luxury touches, making it a rugged yet handsome package.
In contrast, the 2022 RAM 1500 was available in Quad Cab and Crew Cab styles, with seven trim levels ranging from the basic Tradesman to the high-performance TRX. The RAM 1500 introduced a Clean Air System for 2022, filtering 95% of particulates from the interior air. The Big Horn trim and above featured the next-generation Uconnect 5 infotainment system. Our test truck, a Limited trim with a turbodiesel engine and 4WD, was equipped with numerous packages and a Limited 10th Anniversary Edition package, adding luxury features like quilted leather upholstery and a 19-speaker premium sound system. The RAM 1500's design was clean and contemporary, with a cabin exuding quality and a two-tone color scheme that impressed with its materials and construction.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD, with its 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, was a strong performer, especially with the optional Duramax diesel engine paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. Despite its impressive power, it was not the most capable in its class, with competitors like the Ford F-250 Super Duty and Ram 2500 offering higher towing capacities. The Sierra 2500HD's ride was jittery when unladen but improved with added weight. The AT4 trim excelled in off-roading, equipped with features like an automatic-locking rear differential, off-road suspension, and all-terrain tires, handling challenging terrains with ease.
The 2022 RAM 1500 offered several engine options, including a 3.6-liter V6 with eTorque, a 5.7-liter V8, and a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 for the TRX. Our test truck featured the EcoDiesel engine, generating 260 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It had a towing capacity of up to 12,560 pounds, with our Crew Cab Limited 4WD managing 9,600 pounds. The RAM 1500's ride quality was exceptional, thanks to its coil-spring rear suspension and optional air suspension, providing a smooth and quiet driving experience. However, the brake pedal's delayed action was a minor drawback.
The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered three cab configurations, two bed lengths, and 4WD, accommodating up to six passengers. The interior provided ample space, with a wide center console and dual glove boxes for storage. The truck's height required effort to enter, aided by side assist steps. The MultiPro tailgate, available on higher trims, offered six functions for improved cargo access, and the truck featured multiple power outlets and USB ports for convenience.
The 2022 RAM 1500's interior was spacious and comfortable, with heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a reclining rear seat. Practical storage was abundant, with a versatile center console, door panel bins, and under-floor storage. The multi-function tailgate allowed for easy loading and unloading, and the optional RamBox storage bins provided additional cargo space. The power-deploying running boards were useful for entry, especially with the air suspension at its middle height setting.
The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered a range of infotainment systems, with a 7-inch or 8-inch touchscreen, depending on the trim. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard on higher trims, and a navigation system was available. The Bose premium audio system delivered rich sound, though the voice-recognition system had some quirks. The Sierra's 15 camera views, including a "transparent trailer" view, were a standout feature, aiding in trailer hookup and rear visibility.
The 2022 RAM 1500 featured the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system on Big Horn and above trims, with an 8.4-inch or 12-inch touchscreen. The system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Alexa Built-in, and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. While the system worked well overall, it had some complexity and voice recognition issues. The RAM 1500 also offered a head-up display, digital rearview camera mirror, and trailer-specific technology for enhanced convenience.
The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD was available with advanced safety features like automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assistance. Standard features included HD Surround Vision, a rear-seat reminder, and a Teen Driver system. Due to its high GVWR, the Sierra 2500HD was not rated by NHTSA or IIHS, but its mass provided inherent safety benefits.
The 2022 RAM 1500 offered driver-assist features like lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert on lower trims. Higher trims could be equipped with the Advanced Safety Group, adding features like adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera. The RAM 1500 received a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, though frontal-impact ratings suggested room for improvement.
