2022 RAM 1500 vs 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD, redesigned for the 2020 model year, boasted a bold exterior with a tall hood, squared-off lines, and a massive grille, giving it a commanding presence from the front. While its exterior design was considered one of the better-looking among heavy-duty trucks, the interior fell short in material quality, especially in top trims, compared to competitors like the Ram 2500 and Ford F-250 Super Duty. Despite being spacious, the Sierra's cabin wasn't as roomy as the Ram 1500 and Ford Super Duty. The Sierra 2500HD offered five trim levels, each with distinct features, catering to different needs from fleet operators to luxury seekers. The AT4 trim, which we tested, was equipped with off-road features and luxury touches, making it a rugged yet handsome package.

In contrast, the 2022 RAM 1500 was available in Quad Cab and Crew Cab styles, with seven trim levels ranging from the basic Tradesman to the high-performance TRX. The RAM 1500 introduced a Clean Air System for 2022, filtering 95% of particulates from the interior air. The Big Horn trim and above featured the next-generation Uconnect 5 infotainment system. Our test truck, a Limited trim with a turbodiesel engine and 4WD, was equipped with numerous packages and a Limited 10th Anniversary Edition package, adding luxury features like quilted leather upholstery and a 19-speaker premium sound system. The RAM 1500's design was clean and contemporary, with a cabin exuding quality and a two-tone color scheme that impressed with its materials and construction.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD, with its 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, was a strong performer, especially with the optional Duramax diesel engine paired with an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. Despite its impressive power, it was not the most capable in its class, with competitors like the Ford F-250 Super Duty and Ram 2500 offering higher towing capacities. The Sierra 2500HD's ride was jittery when unladen but improved with added weight. The AT4 trim excelled in off-roading, equipped with features like an automatic-locking rear differential, off-road suspension, and all-terrain tires, handling challenging terrains with ease.

The 2022 RAM 1500 offered several engine options, including a 3.6-liter V6 with eTorque, a 5.7-liter V8, and a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 for the TRX. Our test truck featured the EcoDiesel engine, generating 260 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It had a towing capacity of up to 12,560 pounds, with our Crew Cab Limited 4WD managing 9,600 pounds. The RAM 1500's ride quality was exceptional, thanks to its coil-spring rear suspension and optional air suspension, providing a smooth and quiet driving experience. However, the brake pedal's delayed action was a minor drawback.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD offered three cab configurations, two bed lengths, and 4WD, accommodating up to six passengers. The interior provided ample space, with a wide center console and dual glove boxes for storage. The truck's height required effort to enter, aided by side assist steps.
