2022 RAM 1500 Reviews Summary

In 2021, the Ram pickup line overtook the Chevrolet Silverado as the second-best-selling truck in America. That’s the headline. The nuance is that sales figures include the previous-generation version, now sold as the Ram 1500 Classic, which remains in production four years after its should have died. Also, General Motors suffered significant production disruptions due to the ongoing chip shortage. Nevertheless, and especially in light of the redesigned Toyota Tundra arriving in the market, we thought it would be good to revisit the most popular of the Ram trucks, the 2022 Ram 1500.

2023 Jeep Gladiator Reviews Summary

Jeeps and trucks are some of America’s favorite things. The 2023 Jeep Gladiator combines the best attributes of the iconic Wrangler with an open cargo bed supplying as much as 1,710 pounds of payload capacity and up to 7,700 pounds of towing capacity, depending on the configuration and equipment. With its removable top and doors, the 2023 Gladiator is unlike any other truck you can buy. Plus, with the optional EcoDiesel turbodiesel engine, it returns 24 mpg in combined driving.

2022 RAM 1500

10/10

2023 Jeep Gladiator

7/10

The 2022 RAM 1500, with its array of configurations and luxury-focused Limited trim, presented a refined blend of style and comfort. Available in both Quad Cab and Crew Cab options, the RAM 1500 catered to various needs with a choice of a 6-foot, 4-inch box or a shorter 5-foot, 7-inch box for easier urban navigation. The interior of the Limited trim, featuring Indigo and Sea Salt leather with quilted and stitched detailing alongside a suede headliner, exuded luxury uncommon in the full-size truck segment. The truck's overall aesthetic remained contemporary yet understated, aiming to appeal to those who appreciate a more sophisticated appearance without the flashiness typical in this vehicle category.

Conversely, the 2023 Jeep Gladiator maintained its rugged, utilitarian ethos while offering minimal changes over the previous model. Its unique design, featuring a longer wheelbase to accommodate the truck's functionality without compromising its iconic styling, arguably catered more to off-road enthusiasts than urban dwellers. The Gladiator’s Mojave trim highlighted its off-road capability with features like hood scoops and high-clearance fender flares, asserting a bold, adventure-ready attitude. Inside, the Gladiator echoed the beloved Wrangler, with durable materials and functional design elements that prioritized utility over luxury.

Performance

2022 RAM 1500

9/10

2023 Jeep Gladiator

8/10

With a range of engines including a standard 3.6-liter V6 and an optional performance-oriented supercharged 6.2-liter V8 in the TRX model, the 2022 RAM 1500 offered substantial versatility in performance. Our Limited test vehicle featured the EcoDiesel engine which provided a commendable balance of power and efficiency, boasting 260 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. The truck demonstrated an admirable towing capacity and combined fuel economy, which proved the Ram a practical choice for both work-heavy and everyday driving scenarios.

In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Gladiator provided two engine choices, with the standard 285-horsepower V6 and an optional 260-horsepower turbodiesel. While the gas V6 managed decent on-road performance, it was the Gladiator's off-road characteristics, particularly in the Mojave trim with its specialized suspension and locking differentials, that stood out. Although it fell short in towing capacity compared to the RAM, the Gladiator shone on rugged terrains and under challenging outdoor conditions, offering a distinctly Jeep trail-ready experience.

Form and function

2022 RAM 1500

9/10

2023 Jeep Gladiator

8/10

Practicality and convenience were at the forefront of the 2022 RAM 1500's design. The interior featured ample storage solutions and luxurious seating with both heating and ventilation across all seats in the Limited trim. Clever features like a multifunction tailgate and optional RamBox storage added significant usability for various cargo needs. Inside, the RAM provided a voluminous cabin with intuitive layout and high-quality materials that affirmed its position as a top-tier luxury truck.

The 2023 Jeep Gladiator, while basic in comparison, prioritized function aligned with its off-road capacity. The interior, although not as spacious or refined as the RAM's, featured practical storage and durable materials suited for outdoor activities. Its five-foot cargo box and innovative features like a portable wireless speaker and a Trail Rail Management System underlined the Gladiator’s appeal as a versatile, adventure-focused vehicle. However, its payload and towing capacities, while competitive, did not reach the benchmarks set by the RAM.

Technology

2022 RAM 1500

7/10

2023 Jeep Gladiator

8/10

In the realm of technology, the 2022 RAM 1500 advanced with the introduction of the Uconnect 5 system, presented on an optional 12-inch touchscreen. This system offered enhancements in speed, user interaction, and connectivity options, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additional high-tech conveniences like a digital rearview mirror and advanced trailering aids further distinguished the RAM in terms of technological integration.

The Gladiator's technology seemed modest but adequate, with the Mojave benefiting from off-road oriented features like a forward-facing TrailCam. Standard tech included a 7-inch touchscreen, with upgrades available for a larger 8.4-inch screen and additional connected services. While functional, the Gladiator's tech offerings leaned heavily on utility rather than luxury or convenience.

Safety

2022 RAM 1500

6/10

2023 Jeep Gladiator

4/10

The 2022 RAM 1500 excelled in safety, boasting a plethora of driving aids starting from the base model and expanding through the upper trims. High-end safety options included adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist, supported by strong performance in both IIHS and NHTSA crash tests.

The Gladiator, while sound in its basic safety provisions, offered less comprehensive driver assistance technologies. Available upgrades included adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitoring, but overall, the Gladiator’s safety features did not comprehensively match the RAM’s offerings, reflected in its mixed results in safety ratings.
