2021 Ford F-150 Reviews Summary

The Ford F-Series pickup truck has been the bestselling vehicle in the United States for decades, so a lot is at stake with any redesign. The 2021 Ford F-150 plays it safe, with changes that are smaller in scope than the truck’s previous redesign (for the 2015 model year), but nonetheless significant.

This latest redesign brought an updated version of the previous-generation truck’s bold styling, a revamped interior with more convenience features, and the new Sync 4 infotainment system, as well as an available PowerBoost hybrid powertrain. This is the first time Ford has offered an F-150 hybrid, and the PowerBoost is currently the only full-hybrid powertrain available in a full-size pickup truck.

The F-150’s traditional rivals are the Chevrolet Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500 twins and Ram 1500, along with the slower-selling Nissan Titan and Toyota Tundra.

Ford offers a staggering array of options, including six trim levels (XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited), three cab configurations, three bed sizes, six powertrains, and the choice of rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD). Our test vehicle was an F-150 King Ranch with the SuperCrew cab, 4WD, and the PowerBoost hybrid powertrain.

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Reviews Summary

The GMC Sierra 1500 light-duty pickup has been around since 1999 but has seemingly lived in the shadow of its identical twin, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ever since. This is despite the fact that GMC is marketed as the premium alternative. Sales tell a different story, though, with the everyman Silverado moving twice as many units last year as the Sierra.

The GMC Sierra receives a significant makeover for 2022. With a bolder exterior design, a more lavish interior, standard high-end technology, and increased utility, the new Sierra also further elevates the GMC brand with its new high-grade Denali Ultimate and off-road-tuned AT4X models.

Look and feel
2021 Ford F-150

2022 GMC Sierra 1500
8/10
The Ford F-150 has long been a benchmark in the pickup truck segment, and its 2021 iteration continued this tradition with a cautious yet significant redesign. This model year introduced the first hybrid powertrain in the F-150 lineup, alongside updated styling and the latest Sync 4 infotainment system. Ford's approach to offering a broad array of configurations remained, with options catering to nearly any potential buyer's needs. Conversely, the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 emerged from the shadow of its Chevrolet counterpart with a significant update that emphasizes its premium positioning. The makeover encompasses a more assertive exterior, upscale interior enhancements, and the introduction of the high-end Denali Ultimate and AT4X models, signaling a strong push to distinguish itself within the highly competitive full-size pickup market.

2022 GMC Sierra 1500
8/10
Both the F-150 and Sierra 1500 are praised for their performance, each receiving an 8 out of 10 rating from CarGurus. The F-150's PowerBoost hybrid powertrain offers an impressive combination of power and efficiency, while its range of engines ensures there's a suitable option for every need. However, the transition between electric and hybrid modes could be smoother. The Sierra 1500 showcases enhanced engine options for 2022, including a more powerful turbo-four and an updated Duramax diesel, alongside a refined driving experience. Notably, the AT4X model excels in off-road capabilities without compromising on-road comfort, making it a versatile choice for adventurous drivers.
Form and function
2021 Ford F-150
8/10
2022 GMC Sierra 1500
6/10
The F-150's thoughtful design incorporates features like a foldable shifter for a flat work surface and Max Recline Seats, underscoring its utility as a mobile office. Its storage solutions and bed configurations are practical, although it lacks some of the innovative tailgate features found in competitors. The Sierra 1500's interior combines roominess with innovative storage solutions and ergonomic challenges. Its cargo capacity is commendable, but the placement of controls and screens could be improved for easier access and visibility. Both trucks offer unique features that enhance their utility, but the Sierra's interior ergonomics and use of space could be better optimized.
Technology
2021 Ford F-150
9/10
2022 GMC Sierra 1500
9/10
Technologically, both trucks excel, each receiving a 9 out of 10 rating. The F-150's introduction of the Sync 4 system with a large touchscreen and over-the-air updates represents a significant leap forward in connectivity and usability. The Sierra 1500 counters with equally impressive tech, featuring large display screens, Google integration, and advanced trailering aids that enhance the driving experience.
Safety

Safety ratings for both trucks are 7 out of 10. The F-150 and Sierra 1500 offer comprehensive suites of driver assistance features, with Ford planning to introduce Active Drive Assist for semi-autonomous driving capabilities. The Sierra's incorporation of Super Cruise adds a notable advantage in hands-free driving technology, despite its limited availability.
