2023 Lincoln Aviator Reviews Summary

There is a reason that Ford’s Lincoln luxury division emphasizes the ethos of “Quiet Flight” when discussing its products, and our 2023 Aviator Black Label Grand Touring proved itself the epitome of this concept. It quietly glides everywhere you go, swaddling you in comfort, luxury, and high-tech features. And Lincoln hasn’t altered this formula for the new model year. Aside from a new Jet Package (blacked-out trim) and a new Special Edition Luxe Package (black-painted roof), each newly available for Grand Touring models, there are no changes to the 2023 Aviator lineup.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s body-on-frame SUVs appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road, and do either in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favor for anyone not enamored by a V8 growl.

Look and feel

2023 Lincoln Aviator

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator presented a sophisticated and modern aesthetic, particularly in its Black Label Grand Touring trim. It featured a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, available in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. The Grand Touring models added a hybrid system with a 75-kilowatt electric motor and a 13.6-kilowatt-hour battery, standardizing all-wheel drive. Prices ranged from $53,340 to $89,280, with the top-tier model reaching $91,225. The Aviator's design was generally appealing, though the wheel designs on the Black Label Grand Touring were considered too plain. The interior was luxurious, with a mix of high-end materials and a somewhat busy design, featuring patterned metal trim, chrome accents, and rich leather seats. However, some elements, like the chrome detailing and stitching, felt less premium.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX boasted a commanding presence with its large spindle grille and 8.1 inches of ground clearance. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned with limited availability and exclusive paint options. Despite its imposing front, the GX's dimensions appeared more compact from the side, with a short wheelbase and minimal overhangs, emphasizing its off-road capabilities. The interior, however, was marred by an abundance of plastic, which detracted from its luxury badge. While the GX offered some luxury features like heated and cooled seats and leather upholstery, it was clear that the model's design and manufacturing budget had been exhausted long ago, with Lexus focusing on easy production and enjoying a luxury price premium.

Performance

2023 Lincoln Aviator

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring, a plug-in hybrid, delivered impressive performance with its drivetrain generating 494 horsepower and 630 pound-feet of torque. Despite the added weight from the electric motor and battery, the Aviator offered 21 miles of electric range and averaged 23 mpg in hybrid mode. Various driving modes allowed for efficient power management, and during testing, the Aviator achieved an equivalent of 163.4 mpg over a 22.3-mile electric drive. The twin-turbo V6 provided ample power, though the drivetrain's responsiveness was sometimes unpredictable. The Aviator's handling was commendable, thanks to its Dynamic Handling Package and adaptive suspension, but it wasn't particularly engaging to drive. It excelled in providing a quiet, smooth ride, ideal for those seeking comfort over sportiness.

The 2023 Lexus GX was defined by its naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 offered a satisfying linear power delivery and a distinctive sound. The GX's towing capacity of 6,500 pounds was respectable, though it lagged behind some competitors. Fuel economy was a downside, with EPA estimates of 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined. The GX's weight contributed to noticeable body roll, but it remained predictable and controllable. The steering was vague off-center, but the brakes were strong and reliable. The GX featured a Torsen limited-slip differential and a 4WD system, enhancing its off-road capabilities.

Form and function

2023 Lincoln Aviator

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator prioritized comfort with features like a four-zone climate control system, heated and ventilated seats, and massaging front seats. The second-row captain's chairs were spacious and supportive, but the third row was cramped and best suited for occasional use. Cargo space was limited with the third row in use, offering 18.3 cubic feet, but expanded to 77.7 cubic feet with the seats folded.

The 2023 Lexus GX offered ample storage with a deep center console and convenient cupholders. The use of hard buttons for controls was a practical choice, though the abundance of them required familiarization. The second row was comfortable, but the third row was too tight for regular use. The side-hinged trunk door was cumbersome, and cargo space was limited to 11.6 cubic feet with the third row up, expanding to 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded.

Technology

2023 Lincoln Aviator

6/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator was equipped with a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Alexa integration. However, it ran on the outdated Sync 3 software, which struggled with voice recognition. The Aviator also included a 28-speaker Revel Ultima 3D audio system, wireless charging, and a digital key system. The head-up display was effective even with polarized sunglasses, and parking sensors and a surround-view camera aided in parking.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, already felt dated. The 10.3-inch touchscreen offered Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, but the graphics and responsiveness lagged behind competitors. The GX excelled in off-road technology, with a 4WD system, downhill assist, and a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. The Off-Road Package added features like a multi-terrain monitor and crawl control.

Safety

2023 Lincoln Aviator

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator came with a comprehensive suite of driver aids, including adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, and lane-keeping assist. However, the steering wheel controls were unnecessarily complicated. The Aviator received a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA.

The 2023 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS, but it included essential safety features like automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. Despite its older design, the GX was equipped with modern driver assistance systems.
