2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Kia Carnival Reviews Summary

Over the holidays of 2022, we used the 2023 Kia Carnival to drive all over the Los Angeles area for gatherings of family and friends. Whenever we slid open a side door to load or unload passengers, a common question was: “So, is this a minivan or an SUV?” If you work in Kia’s marketing department, the Carnival is neither. The company calls it a multi-purpose vehicle, or MPV. But if you’re a typical consumer, this stylish Kia is a minivan because it has sliding doors and does not offer all-wheel drive or a lifted suspension.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Kia Carnival

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition was a striking vehicle, especially in its Black Onyx color. This model eliminated almost all chrome from its exterior, giving it a sleek, dark appearance that was both modern and aggressive. However, despite its contemporary styling, the GX's design felt dated, reminiscent of its predecessors from two decades ago. Inside, the cabin was crafted with the high-quality materials and refinement that Lexus is known for, offering a quiet and luxurious environment for its occupants.

In contrast, the 2023 Kia Carnival presented a fresh take on the minivan segment, with a design that blurred the lines between a traditional minivan and an SUV. Its SX Prestige trim, with Astra Blue paint and stylish roof pillar trim, gave it an upscale appearance. The interior was equally impressive, featuring dual instrumentation and infotainment screens that added a touch of sophistication. The Carnival's design was both functional and stylish, making it a standout in its category.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Kia Carnival

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque. Despite its hefty curb weight of 5,126 pounds, the GX managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds, aided by its torque-rich engine. The SUV's full-time 4WD system and Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System (KDSS) made it capable off-road, with a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds. However, its fuel economy was a downside, with an EPA estimate of 16 mpg in combined driving.

The 2023 Kia Carnival, equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivered 290 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. Its front-wheel-drive setup and eight-speed automatic transmission provided a smooth driving experience, with an EPA rating of 22 mpg in combined driving. The Carnival's performance was commendable, though it lacked the option for all-wheel drive or a hybrid powertrain. Despite this, the V6 engine offered ample power, and the transmission performed flawlessly, even on challenging terrains.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 Kia Carnival

9/10

Inside the 2022 Lexus GX, the elevated driving position and comfortable seats provided a commanding view of the road. However, the interior layout was somewhat dated, with some controls awkwardly placed. The third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access, limiting its practicality. Cargo space was also a concern, with only 11.6 cubic feet available behind the third row, expanding to 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded.

The 2023 Kia Carnival offered a more versatile interior, with a lower driving position and SUV-like center console. The SX Prestige trim featured genuine leather upholstery and a three-zone climate control system. The VIP Lounge Seats in the second row were luxurious but limited cargo space to 86.9 cubic feet. Without these seats, the Carnival could accommodate up to 145.1 cubic feet of cargo, making it a practical choice for families.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Kia Carnival

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a significant upgrade from previous models. It included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, along with a CD player and a WiFi hotspot. However, the placement of stereo controls was less than ideal, and the system lacked some modern features found in competitors.

The 2023 Kia Carnival boasted a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation and infotainment system, offering a seamless and visually appealing experience. It included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a WiFi hotspot. The Carnival also featured innovative tech like Quiet Mode, Passenger Talk, and Passenger View with Night Vision. However, the Bose audio system was underwhelming, and the voice recognition system had limitations.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Kia Carnival

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX came with Lexus Safety System+, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. However, it lacked some advanced safety technologies found in modern luxury SUVs. The absence of crash-test ratings was also a concern.

The 2023 Kia Carnival offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, with standard forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The EX trim added Junction Turning Detection and Highway Driving Assist, while the SX trim included a surround-view camera and Blind-Spot View Monitor. The Carnival was named a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS for 2022, though its standard headlights received a Poor rating.
