2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

In Volvo speak, “40” denotes an entry-level model. While the Swedish automaker no longer rosters the S40 sedan or V40 wagon in the United States, the XC40 subcompact crossover remains to compete with the likes of the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Lexus UX, and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class for aspiring luxury-car owners’ dollars.

The XC40 was unveiled in 2017, arriving in the U.S. as a 2019 model, and hasn’t undergone a redesign since. An all-electric Volvo XC40 Recharge variant joined the lineup as a 2021 model. Volvo’s other current EV, the C40 Recharge, is also broadly similar to the XC40 models, but with a coupe-like body style.

For 2023, Volvo gave the XC40 several notable updates, including new mild-hybrid powertrains, revised styling, and the Android-based infotainment system previously seen on the XC40 Recharge and other Volvo models.

The mild-hybrid lineup includes base Core, mid-level Plus, and top Ultimate trim levels, with B4 front-wheel drive (FWD) and B5 all-wheel drive (AWD) drivetrains. This Volvo XC40 review is based on the Ultimate trim in B5 AWD spec.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Volvo XC40

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition was a striking vehicle, especially in its Black Onyx color. This model eradicated almost all chrome from the exterior, transforming the SUV into a sleek, dark presence on the road. However, it quickly accumulated dust, making it look drab and old. Despite its modern touches like the signature Lexus spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights, the GX's design felt dated, reminiscent of its first-generation model from 2002. Inside, the cabin quality was impeccable, with smooth, silky refinement and a quiet atmosphere, save for the faint roar of the V8 engine.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC40 maintained a distinctive and clean exterior design, with updates like pixelated "Thor’s Hammer" headlights and a more angular front bumper. The XC40's minimalist interior featured attractive touches such as thin air vents and scalloped door panels. The test vehicle's all-black interior, while well-finished, felt somewhat utilitarian. The XC40's design ethos emphasized practicality and modernity, with a focus on clean lines and functional spaces.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Volvo XC40

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460, with its 4.6-liter V8 engine, produced 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system, allowed the GX to tow up to 6,500 pounds. However, its 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds and a combined fuel economy of 16 mpg were less impressive. The GX's Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System (KDSS) improved stability and off-road capability, but the slow, heavy steering and touchy brake pedal detracted from the driving experience.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 introduced mild-hybrid powertrains, with the base B4 model producing 197 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque, and the B5 model offering 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The B5 model's 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds was notably quicker than the GX. The XC40's chassis provided a refined and composed ride, absorbing bumps well and handling corners with ease. The XC40 Recharge, with its 402 hp and 486 lb-ft of torque, achieved a 0-60 mph time of 4.7 seconds and an EPA-rated range of 223 miles, making it a more dynamic and efficient option.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 Volvo XC40

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position and clear visibility, but its narrow width and short length made rear seat access challenging. The Black Line Special Edition featured comfortable seats with NuLuxe upholstery and black ash wood trim. However, the third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space. The GX's side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, and its cargo capacity was limited to 64.7 cubic feet with the second-row seats folded.

The 2023 Volvo XC40, while compact, provided reasonable space for its class. It offered generous shoulder room and adequate legroom, making the rear seats usable. The XC40's cargo space was 20 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 46.9 cubic feet with them folded, slightly less than some competitors. The interior featured clever storage solutions, such as scalloped door panels and a large center console bin, enhancing practicality.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Volvo XC40

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and navigation. The system was user-friendly, with excellent voice recognition, but the placement of stereo controls below off-roading knobs was confusing. The GX also offered a 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system and standard Lexus Safety System+.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 adopted an Android-based infotainment system with Google Maps, Google Assistant, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The 9-inch touchscreen was intuitive, but the lack of analog controls could be frustrating. The XC40 Ultimate trim included a 13-speaker Harman Kardon audio system and multiple USB-C ports. The system's graphics were pleasing, but Apple users might find the Google integration less satisfying.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Volvo XC40

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX, despite its age, included standard Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. However, it lacked some advanced safety features found in competitors.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 excelled in safety, with standard features like lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, and blind spot monitoring. Higher trims added front and side parking sensors, a 360-degree camera system, and Pilot Assist. The XC40 received top safety ratings from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though it had an "Acceptable" rating in the updated side-impact test.
