The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class received a subtle exterior makeover for its 2024 variant, although the changes might go unnoticed by many. The addition of clever star logos on the front grille was a cute novelty. Differences in headlights and taillights were also slight and required a side-by-side comparison with the previous model to be recognizable. The GLE came standard with LED headlights, while multi-beam LED headlights were an optional upgrade. Its aesthetics were rated seven out of 10, primarily because it didn't drastically deviate from the previous model. However, the Twilight Blue metallic finish and sleek 21-inch AMG multi-spoke alloy wheels did add to its visual charm. These wheels, though slightly pricey at $1,100, perfectly filled out the wheel wells. Mercedes offered seven-wheel designs and 10 exterior colors allowing for significant customization.

On the inside, our GLE 450e tester showcased a high level of class and luxury with Macchiato beige and black leather upholstery paired with natural grain brown walnut trim. These accents added to the sticker price but were deemed money well spent. Mercedes presented 10 interior color choices and five trims including brushed aluminum, black piano lacquer, gray oak, and brown linden wood, enhancing the premium feel of the cabin.

Comparatively, the 2023 Lexus GX had a commanding road presence thanks to its massive spindle grille, 8.1 inches of ground clearance, and an overall height of 74.2 inches. The GX Black Line Special Edition, limited to 3,000 units, was offered in three paint colors with Nori Green Pearl being exclusive. The GX had a shorter wheelbase at 109.8 inches making it look more compact. It had shorter overhangs which emphasized its off-road capability. The design leaned towards sleekness compared to Toyota's boxy language, making technical driving easier.

Inside, the GX lagged due to the extensive use of plastic materials. However, it did offer luxury touches like heated and cooled front seats, a power-retracting steering wheel, and premium leather upholstery. Despite these, the cabin reminded buyers that the GX needed easy manufacturing due to its low sales volume.

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class catered to diverse SUV shoppers with multiple powertrains, provided they were willing to spend a minimum of around $63,805. The lineup included the GLE 350, GLE 450, GLE 450e, and GLE 580, along with AMG-badged models like the AMG GLE 53 and AMG GLE 63 S. Engine options ranged from turbocharged four-cylinders to a twin-turbo V8 in the AMG GLE 63 S, boasting 603 horsepower. The GLE 450e was considered an all-rounder with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and electric motor producing 381 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. It managed a zero to 60 mph time of 5.4 seconds and offered an estimated electric range of 40 miles. The transition between gas and electric power was smooth, though the regenerative brakes occasionally felt numb. The GLE showcased sophisticated steering and a luxurious, quiet cabin.

The 2023 Lexus GX was defined by its 4.6-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine, providing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. While not overwhelmingly powerful on paper, it delivered a satisfying linear acceleration and distinctive V8 growl. Fuel economy was less impressive at 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined. The GX's weight made it roll through corners, though the roll was predictable and controllable. The brakes were strong but required significant effort to slow down the vehicle.
