2020 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The Land Rover Range Rover is the definitive word in “ultra-luxury sport utility vehicle.” It’s the perfect example of a no-compromise SUV, delivering superlative cabin space, luxury appointments, power, and capability.

Believe it or not, the current fourth-generation Range Rover is getting long in the tooth. A fifth-generation Range Rover is around the corner, so how has Land Rover kept its flagship SUV relevant? With incremental updates through the years. In addition to new infotainment and safety technologies, Land Rover has continued to expand the powertrain lineup, to the point where there are now six different powertrain options. So does the Range Rover continue to set the standard for 4x4 luxury? Read on to find out.

2021 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

In some parts of America, large luxury three-row SUVs are commonplace, but the list of available models is relatively short. Until recently, one famous German automaker was missing from the menu, but when the X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as a new BMW, that changed.

Based on the BMW X5 and built in the same South Carolina factory, the 2021 BMW X7 sees a few changes for 2021. The standard xDrive40i model gains a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain offering an incremental increase in efficiency, BMW cancels the xDrive50i version, and the performance-tuned Alpina XB7 debuts.

BMW also modifies the SUV’s standard, optional, and package equipment this year, restricting many of the X7’s most decadent features to the Alpina XB7.

2021 BMW X7

8/10

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover was a testament to the brand's legacy of combining luxury with rugged capability. Originating from the Series I off-roader, the Range Rover evolved into a luxury SUV with robust 4x4 underpinnings, a hallmark that defined the brand. By 2012, the current-generation Range Rover was introduced, offering a variety of trims such as HSE, Autobiography, and SVAutobiography Dynamic, available in both Standard Wheelbase (SWB) and Long Wheelbase (LWB) configurations. Standard features included leather seating, a panoramic sunroof, and the InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system, while higher trims added luxurious touches like massaging seats and quad-zone climate control.

In contrast, the 2021 BMW X7 was a symbol of opulence and technological sophistication. It boasted superior interior quality compared to its competitors, with three versions available: the xDrive40i, M50i, and the high-end Alpina BX7. The X7 xDrive40i test vehicle featured premium extended leather, a leather-wrapped dashboard, and a suite of option packages that elevated its luxury status. The X7's design was marked by its massive grille, which suited its large SUV frame, and its interior shared high-tech design elements with the X5, offering a seamless blend of quality materials and intuitive technology.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover offered a diverse range of powertrains, starting with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 355 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque. The HSE trim featured a more powerful version of the same engine, delivering 395 hp and 405 lb-ft of torque. A turbodiesel V6 was also available, rated at 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. The P525 and Autobiography trims came with a supercharged 5.0-liter V8, generating 518 hp and 461 lb-ft of torque, while the SV Autobiography Dynamic boasted a 557 hp V8. All engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive, ensuring a blend of power and efficiency. The Range Rover's electronic air suspension and Terrain Response System made it a formidable off-road vehicle, capable of tackling various terrains with ease.

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine with 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive AWD system. The eBoost mild-hybrid technology aimed to improve fuel economy, though EPA ratings showed a slight decrease compared to the previous year. The X7 accelerated to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, offering ample power for most driving scenarios. Despite its nearly 5,400-pound curb weight, the X7's Dynamic Handling Package and Active Comfort Drive system provided a smooth and comfortable ride, though it struggled with excessive body motions in certain driving conditions. The X7's M Sport brakes ensured reliable stopping power, while its ground clearance and off-road capabilities were limited by its luxury-focused design.

Form and function

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover offered two wheelbase options, with standard seating for five. The SWB version provided 70.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, while the LWB model offered 77.5 cubic feet. The Range Rover's interior featured a hands-free power liftgate with a unique two-piece configuration, enhancing its practicality. The center-console compartment was convenient, and both front and rear doors had ample storage space.

The 2021 BMW X7's interior was a showcase of luxury, with features like heated and ventilated front seats, a five-zone climate control system, and premium Merino leather upholstery. The second-row captain's chairs were exceptionally comfortable, though access to the third row required some maneuvering. The X7 offered 48.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row folded and 90.4 cubic feet with the second row down. The power clamshell tailgate revealed a small cargo area behind the third row, but overall cargo capacity fell short of class leaders.

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover's InControl Touch Pro Duo system featured two touchscreens, with the top screen handling navigation and media, and the lower screen managing climate and vehicle settings. The system's integrated dials changed functions based on the selected menu, though it required a learning curve. A fully digital instrument panel and optional head-up display added to the Range Rover's tech offerings.

The 2021 BMW X7 came equipped with Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation and an iDrive 7.0 infotainment system, both featuring 12.3-inch displays. The system included Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and enhanced SiriusXM 360L, along with Connected Package Pro for real-time data. Wireless charging, natural voice recognition, and gesture control were also available, though the latter was inconsistent. The head-up display was difficult to see with polarized sunglasses, but overall, the X7's technology was user-friendly and comprehensive.

While the Range Rover offered a solid list of safety features, some competitors provided more standard equipment.

The 2021 BMW X7 came with a comprehensive suite of standard safety technologies, with additional features available in the Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package. The Driving Assistance Professional Package included advanced features like evasive-steering assist and traffic-jam assist, which worked well in most scenarios. The Parking Assistance Package added semi-automated parking assist and a surround-view camera, enhancing the X7's safety capabilities.
