2021 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

In some parts of America, large luxury three-row SUVs are commonplace, but the list of available models is relatively short. Until recently, one famous German automaker was missing from the menu, but when the X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as a new BMW, that changed.

Based on the BMW X5 and built in the same South Carolina factory, the 2021 BMW X7 sees a few changes for 2021. The standard xDrive40i model gains a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain offering an incremental increase in efficiency, BMW cancels the xDrive50i version, and the performance-tuned Alpina XB7 debuts.

BMW also modifies the SUV’s standard, optional, and package equipment this year, restricting many of the X7’s most decadent features to the Alpina XB7.

2022 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

It’s easy for a luxury brand to lose stature and cachet, but it’s hard for a mainstream brand to gain it. Nevertheless, Mazda is giving it the good old college try, having discussed its plan to become a premium brand for more than half a decade.

Unlike some automakers that rely solely on marketing to support their premium brand positioning, Mazda heavily invests in everything from design and engineering to dealership facilities, all to ensure there is substance behind its claim. Now, numerous updates to its most popular model elevate the 2022 Mazda CX-5 solidly into premium territory.

Don’t believe us? Drive one of the turbocharged versions of the 2022 CX-5 back to back with a similarly priced Audi Q3, Buick Envision, BMW X1, GMC Terrain, or Mercedes-Benz GLA, and you’ll see what we mean.

Look and feel

2021 BMW X7

8/10

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2021 BMW X7 was a standout in the luxury SUV segment, often seen navigating the bustling streets of Los Angeles. It was known for its superior interior quality, surpassing that of the Cadillac Escalade, and boasted more prestige than the Infiniti QX80 or Lincoln Navigator. The X7 offered advanced technological features that outshone the Lexus LX 570 and had a commanding visual presence compared to the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Despite its impressive attributes, the choice of a luxury SUV often came down to personal preference, and the X7 was no exception.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5, on the other hand, introduced subtle yet significant updates. It featured new LED headlights and taillights, revised bumpers, a redesigned grille, and a fresh rear liftgate. The top-tier Signature trim received body-color lower exterior trim, enhancing Mazda's premium brand aspirations. Inside, the CX-5 retained its luxurious feel with Nappa leather upholstery and real wood trim. The 2022 model also saw a restructured trim lineup, offering a choice between the 2.5 S and 2.5 Turbo, with prices ranging from $25,900 to $38,650, excluding destination charges.

Performance

2021 BMW X7

2022 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, delivering 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque. It featured an eight-speed sport automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive AWD system. The eBoost mild-hybrid technology, with a 48-volt starter/generator and battery, aimed to enhance fuel efficiency and responsiveness. However, the X7's fuel economy ratings were slightly lower than the previous year, with 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. Despite this, the X7 offered ample power, accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The Dynamic Handling Package improved maneuverability and stability, though the SUV's weight and size were noticeable on winding roads.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 2.5 S came with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. It featured a revised six-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD, achieving 26 mpg in combined driving. The 2.5 Turbo variant offered 256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium gas, with a combined fuel economy of 24 mpg. The CX-5's driving dynamics were enhanced with increased structural rigidity and reworked suspension, providing a quieter and smoother ride. The Mi-Drive system offered Normal, Sport, and Off-Road modes, contributing to the CX-5's sporty and composed handling.

Form and function

2022 Mazda CX-5

7/10

The 2021 BMW X7's interior was a testament to luxury, featuring heated and ventilated front seats, a five-zone climate control system, and premium Merino leather upholstery. The second-row captain's chairs were exceptionally comfortable, though access could be challenging due to the long rear doors. The third-row seats were surprisingly accommodating for adults, with power adjustments for easy access. Cargo space was limited behind the third row but expanded to 48.6 cubic feet with the seats folded down, and 90.4 cubic feet with the second row down.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 addressed previous complaints with new, supportive seats and a sportier driving position. The 2.5 Turbo model included leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and heated and ventilated front seats. The back seat remained snug but offered heated cushions and air vents for added comfort. The control layout was a challenge, with the Mazda Connect system lacking a touchscreen and natural voice recognition. Cargo space was adequate, with 30.9 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 59.3 cubic feet with them folded down, comparing favorably to entry-level luxury SUVs.

Technology

2022 Mazda CX-5

5/10

The 2021 BMW X7 featured the Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation and iDrive 7.0 infotainment system, both with 12.3-inch displays. The system included Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM 360L, and Connected Package Pro with real-time data and WiFi hotspot access. Gesture control and natural voice recognition were also available, though the former was inconsistent. The head-up display was a useful feature, though visibility was limited with polarized sunglasses.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 retained its Mazda Connect infotainment system with a 10.25-inch display, operated via center console and steering wheel controls. While lacking a touchscreen and natural voice recognition, the system offered Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mazda Connected Services with a three-year trial. The 2.5 S Premium trim and above included a 10-speaker Bose sound system, which performed well in the CX-5. SiriusXM satellite radio was also standard from this trim level.

Safety

2022 Mazda CX-5

10/10

The 2021 BMW X7 came equipped with comprehensive safety features, with additional options available in the Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package. The former included advanced driving assistance systems like evasive-steering assist and traffic-jam assist, while the latter offered semi-automated parking assist and a surround-view camera. The X7's ADAS was generally reliable, though it occasionally struggled with lane maintenance and automated lane changes.

The 2022 Mazda CX-5 boasted a robust i-Activsense package, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims added adaptive headlights, a surround-view camera, and Traffic Jam Assist. The CX-5's safety systems were mostly agreeable, though there was a delay in recognizing vehicles in moderate traffic. The CX-5 received a "Top Safety Pick+" rating from the IIHS, highlighting its strong safety credentials.
