With incremental updates through the years. In addition to new infotainment and safety technologies, Land Rover has continued to expand the powertrain lineup, to the point where there are now six different powertrain options. 2021 Jeep Cherokee Reviews SummaryThe KL-generation Cherokee launched as a 2014 model and almost immediately began swirling in controversy. Jeep hadn’t offered a Cherokee in the United States since the 2001 model year, when the XJ Cherokee disappeared, replaced by two generations of the Jeep Liberty. There was great excitement for this all-new Jeep. Lots of fans were hoping for a redo of the 1984 to 2001 Jeep Cherokee that really helped to define the midsize SUV class with a unibody and legendary toughness. “The 2014 Cherokee feels planted on the road, more carlike than trucklike…” read an early review in Car and Driver. A separate review from the same publication read: “If you have eyes, you’ve noticed that this Cherokee, code-named KL, makes no design references, other than with the grille, to the iconic, rectilinear XJ Cherokee.” But the automotive industry isn’t necessarily in the business of fueling nostalgia. It’s interested in what it can sell in great numbers in the future, not what people liked 30 years ago. And what we’ve realized over the years is that the Cherokee is really good at what it does, and it’s capable of doing a lot more than you’d expect. Jeep sells these at a rate of 240,000 annually, in a good year. The best the Jeep Liberty it replaced ever managed was 166,883 units before dropping off the face of the Earth entirely. Clearly, Jeep knew something we didn’t when it released the Cherokee. | |

The 2020 Land Rover Range Rover was renowned for its luxurious appeal, rooted in its origins as a rugged off-roader. Initially designed for British landowners, it evolved into a luxury SUV with robust 4x4 capabilities, defining the brand's identity. By 2012, the current-generation Range Rover offered various trims like HSE, Autobiography, and SVAutobiography Dynamic, available in both Standard and Long Wheelbase configurations. Standard features included leather seating, a panoramic sunroof, and a dual-screen infotainment system, with options for heated rear seats and a premium audio system.
In contrast, the 2021 Jeep Cherokee's styling had matured since its debut, with a more proportionate look despite its unique grille and headlights. The appearance varied significantly with trim levels, from the basic Latitude to the upscale 80th Anniversary Edition. Jeep's expertise in roof design was evident with the Cherokee's optional panoramic sunroof. The Cherokee stood out in a crowded SUV market, resembling the larger Grand Cherokee from the front, and offered a practical, straightforward interior design that varied in luxury depending on the trim.

The 2020 Range Rover offered a diverse range of powertrains, starting with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine producing 355 horsepower. The HSE trim featured a non-hybrid version of the same engine, delivering 395 hp. A turbodiesel V6 was also available, offering 254 hp. Higher trims like the P525 and Autobiography came with a supercharged 5.0-liter V8, generating 518 hp, while the SV Autobiography Dynamic boasted 557 hp. All engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive, providing a blend of power and off-road capability. The Range Rover's electronic air suspension ensured a smooth ride, while its Terrain Response System offered multiple drive modes for various conditions.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee offered three engine options: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 180 hp, a 3.2-liter V6 with 271 hp, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 270 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Despite decent acceleration figures, the Cherokee wasn't designed for high-speed thrills. All models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission, praised for its efficiency. The Trailhawk model excelled off-road, equipped with Jeep Active Drive Lock and Selec-Speed Crawl Control. While available in front-wheel drive, the Cherokee's off-road prowess was best experienced in its four-wheel-drive variants.
The 2020 Range Rover offered two wheelbase options, with seating for five or four with optional captain’s chairs. The SWB version provided 70.9 cubic feet of cargo space with seats folded, while the LWB offered 77.5 cubic feet. Despite its luxury, the Range Rover's cargo space was less than some competitors. The interior featured a hands-free power liftgate and a unique two-piece configuration for easy loading.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee, positioned between the Renegade and Grand Cherokee, offered 26 cubic feet of cargo space with seats up and 55 cubic feet with seats folded, lagging behind competitors. It provided about 102 cubic feet of passenger volume, competitive within its class. The interior varied by trim, from basic rubberized plastic in the Latitude to upscale Nappa leather in the Latitude Lux, maintaining a straightforward, functional design.
The 2020 Range Rover featured the InControl Touch Pro Duo system with two touchscreens for navigation, climate, and vehicle settings. While innovative, the system had a learning curve and occasional lag issues. A fully digital instrument panel and optional head-up display added to its tech appeal.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee boasted the Uconnect infotainment system, praised for its user-friendly interface. Available with 7-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreens, it supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though wired. A 4G WiFi hotspot and Amazon Alexa integration were also available. Remote start was a notable feature, enhancing convenience.
The 2020 Range Rover included standard safety features like low-speed automatic emergency braking and lane-departure warning. Optional features included a 360-degree camera and adaptive cruise control. While comprehensive, some features were optional rather than standard.
The 2021 Jeep Cherokee received "Good" crashworthiness scores from the IIHS but lacked a Top Safety Pick award. It earned a four-star NHTSA rating. Standard safety features included lane departure warning and blind spot monitoring, with adaptive cruise control available on higher trims.
