2023 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

The 2023 BMW X7 receives a significant refresh, with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. A recent test drive left us scratching our heads over the new headlights and pulling out our hair over the new infotainment system. So in some ways the 2023 X7 represents a step backwards for this large luxury SUV.

2023 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. The current-generation model has been on sale since 2017, and while it still seems fresh as a daisy, seven years is a long time in the automotive world. In addition, aside from a new Rhodium White premium paint option, Mazda makes no other changes to the 2023 CX-5. Furthermore, the CX-5 now lives side-by-side with the Mazda CX-50, and when you consider the existence of the CX-30, the upcoming CX-90, and the rumored CX-70, well, it certainly doesn’t seem as though the CX-5 will remain in Mazda’s lineup for much longer.

Look and feel

2023 BMW X7

6/10

2023 Mazda CX-5

8/10

The 2023 BMW X7 underwent a significant design update, adopting a more assertive front-end style reminiscent of the BMW 7 Series sedan. The new LED accent lights and recessed headlights contributed to a bold, albeit controversial, appearance. While the oversized kidney grille remained a polarizing feature, the rest of the exterior design retained its previous elegance. Inside, the X7's interior received a modern refresh with a curved glass housing for the digital instrument panel and infotainment touchscreen. The use of high-quality materials, such as supple leather and Sensafin synthetic substitutes, added to the luxurious feel, although some interior trim choices caused unwanted glare.

In contrast, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 maintained its reputation for stylish design and high-quality materials, giving it a luxury feel despite its compact crossover status. The CX-5's interior was enhanced with improved front seats for better comfort and support, and the Signature trim offered premium Nappa leather upholstery. However, the CX-5's technology and storage space were less impressive, with a frustrating infotainment system and limited cargo capacity. Despite these drawbacks, the CX-5's overall design and refinement made it a compelling choice in its segment.

Performance

2023 Mazda CX-5

The 2023 BMW X7 offered two engine options, starting with the base xDrive40i model featuring a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine and a 48-volt mild hybrid system, producing 375 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain allowed the X7 to accelerate to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds. The X7 M60i model upgraded to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, achieving 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Despite its nearly 6,000-pound weight, the X7 delivered impressive acceleration and composed handling, though its ride was slightly firmer compared to other luxury SUVs.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine choices as well. The base 2.5 S model came with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The CX-5 2.5 Turbo model featured a turbocharged version of the same engine, delivering 256 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque on premium fuel. This engine provided a rewarding driving experience, with responsive acceleration and improved structural rigidity and suspension dampening. The CX-5's handling was agile and engaging, making it a pleasure to drive on winding roads, though its fuel economy fell short of expectations during testing.

Form and function

2023 Mazda CX-5

6/10

The 2023 BMW X7 excelled in providing ample interior space, with comfortable second-row seating and a large sunroof enhancing the airy feel. Accessing the third row required some patience, but it offered adequate space for average-sized adults. Cargo capacity was generous, with 12.8 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 48.6 cubic feet with the third row folded, and a maximum of 90.4 cubic feet with all rear seats down. The X7's split tailgate and adjustable suspension made loading and unloading cargo convenient.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5, while offering improved front seat comfort, fell short in terms of interior space. The rear seat was cramped, and the cargo area provided 30.9 cubic feet of space behind the rear seat, expanding to 59.3 cubic feet with the rear seat folded. These measurements were less than many mainstream rivals but more than some entry-luxury models. The CX-5's interior materials were top-notch, but its technology and storage space left room for improvement.

Technology

2023 Mazda CX-5

3/10

The 2023 BMW X7 featured the latest iDrive infotainment system, which, despite its intuitive layout, had its drawbacks. Many physical buttons were replaced by touchscreen controls, making simple tasks like adjusting seat settings cumbersome. Voice commands offered some relief, but the system's complexity detracted from the overall experience. The X7's technology suite included advanced safety features and driver assistance systems, enhancing convenience and safety.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5's Mazda Connect infotainment system, while visually appealing, was frustrating to use. The lack of a helpful voice recognition system and awkward physical controls made it challenging to operate while driving. The system's control knob required multiple twists and pushes to execute commands, diverting attention from the road. Despite these issues, the CX-5 offered features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Bose premium audio system, though its user experience fell short of expectations.

Safety

2023 Mazda CX-5

10/10

The 2023 BMW X7 came equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including frontal collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive headlights. The M60i trim added a surround-view camera system and optional features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. While crash test results were unavailable, BMW's reputation and safety features provided peace of mind.

The 2023 Mazda CX-5 excelled in safety, with the i-Activsense suite offering a range of driver assistance technologies. Standard features included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. The CX-5 received top safety ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS, earning a five-star overall rating and a Top Safety Pick designation. However, the lack of a warning message for driving without headlights at night was a notable oversight.
