2023 Toyota Tacoma Reviews Summary

The Toyota Tacoma has reached “Legend” status: it’s the default choice for many shoppers, and for good reason. The Tacoma enjoys a hard-earned reputation for bullet-proof reliability. It’s the ideal size for many situations. It looks cool and, in TRD Pro trim, it can back up those looks with genuine off-road brilliance.

But heavy is the head that wears the crown, and the current Tacoma may be starting to buckle under the weight. With more powerful and more efficient options emerging in the compact and midsize truck space, Toyota is no longer the one-stop shop for shoppers. Luckily, a new Tacoma may be just over the horizon.

2023 Chevrolet Colorado Reviews Summary

With the new 2023 Colorado, Chevy focuses on what people typically want in a truck. That’s why it comes only in a crew-cab, short-bed configuration, and most of the trim levels are off-road-oriented. A turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain supplies plenty of power, and even the base Work Truck trim level has modern instrumentation, infotainment, connectivity, and safety technologies. Robustly engineered, the new Colorado also supplies impressive payload and towing capacities, at 1,684 and 7,700 pounds, respectively. Good looks round out an impressive overall package.

Look and feel
2023 Toyota Tacoma
9/10
2023 Chevrolet Colorado
7/10

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma, despite its smaller size relative to full-size trucks, projected an assertively substantial look. With its upright grille and an overall assertive stance, the Tacoma could handle city and off-road environments gracefully. Toyota offered the Tacoma in various configurations, including different trims that ranged from the basic SR to the off-road-ready TRD Pro. Each trim had unique enhancements, particularly noticeable in the SR5 SX package with its stealthy black motifs and the contrasting Chrome Package that added glimmery details to the truck’s aesthetics.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado also brought bold features onto the scene, notably in the Trail Boss trim we reviewed. Dressed in Radiant Red and equipped with a factory suspension lift and box-flared fenders, it looked rugged and ready for adventure. The interior, drawing hints from the Camaro, featured stylish yet straightforward controls that added a functional but sophisticated air to the rough terrains it was designed to traverse.

Performance
2023 Toyota Tacoma

2023 Chevrolet Colorado
8/10

The Tacoma was powered mainly by a robust 3.5-liter V6 offering 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, effectively handling most terrains with confidence, albeit not quietly. Its off-road design elements were put to the test in the snow of Salt Lake City, proving Toyota's focused engineering on all-terrain capability. However, the road noise and vague steering on highways illustrated some trade-offs in comfort.

Conversely, the Chevrolet Colorado presented a potent standard turbocharged 2.7-liter engine that, in higher trims like the Trail Boss, put out 310 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. The Colorado performed exceptionally both on rugged trails and smooth highways, benefiting immensely from enhancements like the Autotrac 4WD system and advanced suspension technology. Despite powerful off-road capabilities, it maintained a commendable calm on paved roads, integrating robust performance with daily usability.

Form and function

7/10

Interior-wise, the Toyota Tacoma offered configurations suitable for varied needs, from the simpler access cab to the more spacious double cab. The focus was clearly on functionality tailored to adventurous lifestyles, evidenced by the generous cargo space despite a compact overall interior. The ergonomics were more functional than luxurious, particularly with simpler controls and modest creature comforts.

The Chevrolet Colorado impressed with its comfy yet durable interior, reflected in better space utilization and more accessible seating even in the rear. The ergonomic design provided a more welcoming passenger experience, whether tackling long drives or short trips. Additionally, the cargo management solutions, like the StowFlex system and Mid-Position tailgate feature, spoke to Chevy's focus on enhancing utility without compromising on truck capabilities.

Technology
2023 Toyota Tacoma
6/10
2023 Chevrolet Colorado
9/10

Technology in the Tacoma felt slightly outdated, though still functional, with its smaller touchscreens and basic connectivity options. It seemed outpaced by competitors, a bit sluggish in embracing the latest infotainment advancements.

In stark contrast, the Colorado showcased a more modern approach with an impressive 11.3-inch touchscreen and integration of Google’s tech ecosystem that brought smart features right to the driver's seat, enhancing connectivity, entertainment, and practical functionalities in a harmonious blend well-suited to the modern driver's needs.

Safety
2023 Toyota Tacoma
7/10
2023 Chevrolet Colorado
3/10

Safety technologies in the Tacoma remained robust, with Toyota Safety Sense providing several key systems to protect occupants. However, it lacked some of the more advanced features that competitors have begun offering, which could lead to perceptions of it being slightly behind in this critical area.

Colorado stepped up with Chevy Safety Assist, covering a comprehensive range of driver assistance features. OnStar added a layer of security and convenience, significantly enhancing the overall safety profile of the vehicle. However, issues with over-sensitive systems indicated some refinement was still necessary.
