2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Buick Encore GX Reviews Summary

General Motors has big plans for Buick. The near-luxury division positioned between Chevrolet and Cadillac is slated to go all-electric by the end of the decade, with a fresh lineup of EVs highlighted by a new design language. But those new models aren’t scheduled to arrive for a few more years, so for now Buick carries on with a lineup of conventional gasoline crossover SUVs, of which the 2023 Buick Encore GX is the entry-level option.

The Encore GX was launched for the 2020 model year as a larger sibling to the Buick Encore, but the standard Encore is being discontinued, leaving only the GX for 2023. It slots below the Envision and Enclave in Buick’s three-model crossover lineup.

While Buick is generally considered a step up from mainstream brands, the Encore GX’s size and pricing are more in line with subcompact SUVs from mainstream brands, such as the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30, or the lifted-hatchback Subaru Crosstrek. In fact, the Encore GX shares powertrains and a basic platform with one of these vehicles—the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The only change for 2023 is a new extra-cost Moonstone Gray Metallic paint option. That means the lineup still consists of base Preferred, mid-level Select, and top Essence trim levels. We tested out an Encore GX Essence for this review.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

5/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition was a striking vehicle, especially in its Black Onyx color. This model eliminated most chrome from its exterior, giving it a sleek, dark appearance that some might find appealing. However, the GX's design was reminiscent of its predecessors, with a look that seemed outdated despite its modern features like the signature Lexus spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights. Inside, the cabin was crafted with the high-quality materials Lexus is known for, offering a quiet and refined environment. Yet, the overall design theme remained similar to earlier models, which might not appeal to those seeking a contemporary aesthetic.

In contrast, the 2023 Buick Encore GX broke away from Buick's historical design cues, opting for a more modern, albeit awkward, appearance. Its rounded surfaces and tall stance gave it proportions that didn't quite fit the SUV mold. The Sport Touring Package added subtle enhancements, but the differences were minimal unless compared directly to a standard model. Inside, the Encore GX Essence trim offered expected features like leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control, but the abundance of plastic reminded occupants of its position in Buick's lineup. The dashboard design was uninspired, echoing some less favorable aspects of 1990s automotive design, though the instrument cluster was a notable highlight.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

5/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Despite its hefty curb weight of 5,126 pounds, the GX managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds, aided by its torque delivery at 3,500 rpm. The SUV featured a six-speed automatic transmission paired with a full-time 4WD system, contributing to its off-road capabilities and a towing capacity of 6,500 pounds. However, its fuel economy was a downside, with an EPA estimate of 16 mpg in combined driving. The GX's Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System improved ride stability, but the steering and brake pedal feel detracted from the driving experience.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX offered two turbocharged three-cylinder engines: a 1.2-liter with 137 horsepower and a 1.3-liter with 155 horsepower. The latter, paired with AWD and a nine-speed automatic transmission, provided a stronger acceleration feel than expected. However, power delivery was not smooth, requiring a patient driving style. The Encore GX excelled in ride comfort and noise reduction, thanks to its well-damped suspension and active noise cancellation. Despite these strengths, the driving experience was marred by slow steering and significant body roll, making it feel less agile than its competitors.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX provided an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat, offering good visibility. Its tall, narrow design made it maneuverable in various settings, though the steering required effort. The interior featured comfortable seating and physical controls, but the layout led to confusion with some knobs. The Black Line Special Edition added simulated leather and wood trim, with heated and ventilated front seats. The third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space, with a cumbersome tailgate design further complicating loading. Cargo capacity was limited, with only 64.7 cubic feet available with all seats folded.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX offered competitive passenger space, with headroom comparable to rivals. However, front seats were positioned closely, reducing spaciousness, and lacked thigh support. Despite these issues, the Encore GX made efficient use of space for small-item storage, with large door pockets and a space-saving wireless phone charger. The instrumentation was well-executed, with clear displays and useful warning lights. However, the absence of rear USB ports and a 360-degree camera button was noted. Cargo space was respectable, with 23.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 50.2 cubic feet with them folded.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a significant upgrade from previous models. It included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and navigation, with a CD player for those nostalgic for the 1990s. The system's dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition were highlights, though the placement of stereo controls was awkward. Standard Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view cameras added to the tech offerings, but the overall technology suite was limited compared to competitors.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX came with a standard 8-inch touchscreen and 4.2-inch driver information display. Optional features included navigation, a head-up display, and a Bose audio system. Standard tech included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The interface was user-friendly, with attractive graphics, though the screen size was modest. The lack of rear USB ports was a drawback, but the overall system was well-received for its ease of use and functionality.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Buick Encore GX

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings due to its age, but it included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and more. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were also standard, but more advanced safety features were absent. This simplicity might appeal to some, but others seeking modern driving aids would need to look elsewhere.

The 2023 Buick Encore GX offered a comprehensive suite of standard driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist. Optional features like adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera system enhanced safety. The Encore GX received a five-star overall safety rating from NHTSA and was an IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2022, though child-seat anchor ease of use was rated lower.
