overall

Summary
With 2,397 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,370, 29.4% of 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty 4.21 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty stands out as a heavy-duty truck that pairs serious capability with more modern technology than buyers might expect in a work-focused pickup. Ford describes the Super Duty lineup as all-new for 2017, and the result is a truck aimed squarely at the jobs that matter most in this segment: pulling stumps, hauling loads, and moving a lot of gear. That makes it appealing to buyers who need a truck built around strength first, but still want the convenience of newer tech that helps ownership feel easier.
Its core appeal is straightforward: big beds, tall suspensions, strong construction, and stronger axles. Those traits make the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty a natural fit for work sites, highways, and back-country use alike. Owner feedback also points to strong power and performance, especially for towing, along with comfort features and diesel strength. At the same time, some owners have raised concerns about fuel economy and a few interior details, so it is best understood as a highly capable truck that prioritizes function over efficiency.

The best diesel Ford has made is the 6.7. I have owned every new Ford diesel the has been produced, 7.3, 6.0, 6.4, 6.7. The 6.7l is by far my favorite. What I like about the 6.7 listed; handling, pulling, torque, overall power. If there is one thing I do not like it would be the fuel mileage, the best you will get with crew 4wd is 15 & that is pushing it a bit.

Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty earns a 4.2/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating, which points to a truck that satisfies owners and impresses our testers. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its power, towing ability, comfort features, and diesel strength, and the overview makes clear that this truck is built around serious work first. That combination makes it especially appealing if you need a heavy-duty pickup for hauling, towing, or job-site duty but still want newer tech to make ownership easier.
With 28.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty reliable?
Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to reliability, dependable power, and diesel strength, with owners describing the truck as a vehicle they can count on for towing and hard use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Super Duty is built to take a beating and keep moving for hundreds of thousands of miles, which reinforces its durability-focused design.
The truck’s capability-first engineering suggests long-term ownership should be manageable if you stay on top of maintenance and buy a well-kept example. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the truck’s mission and more about how hard the previous owner worked it.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty?
At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the truck’s body, towing-related hardware, and interior controls. Because this model is often used for demanding work, condition matters as much as mileage, especially if you plan to tow or haul regularly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from XL to XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum. The base XL is the most work-focused, while higher trims add more comfort and upscale equipment; the Platinum stands out with a remote tailgate release, unique leather seating design, navigation, and adaptive steering.
- Powertrain: You can choose between a 6.2-liter gas V8 and a 6.7-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8. The gas engine makes 385 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, while the diesel delivers 440 hp and 925 pound-feet of torque for maximum towing strength.
- Safety package: The truck includes massive compound mirrors, a 360-degree camera system, a front camera, a full complement of airbags, traction control, and an SOS post-crash alert system. The camera setup is especially helpful for parking and trailering.
- Infotainment: SYNC 3 is the main interface, with Bluetooth smartphone pairing, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto support. The system is described as easy to use, with clear fonts and a sensible menu layout.
- Fuel efficiency: In mixed driving, the diesel returned 15.9 miles per gallon, and you can expect roughly 15 miles per gallon even in typical use.
Which 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty trim should I buy?
The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty is offered in 5 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- XL: This is the most basic work-truck choice, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the Super Duty lineup and care more about capability than comfort.
- XLT: This is the best-value trim for most buyers because it adds more everyday usability while staying closer to the truck’s core work mission.
- Lariat: Choose this if you want a stronger mix of comfort and equipment without jumping all the way to the luxury-focused upper trims.
- King Ranch: This trim suits you if you want a more upscale heavy-duty truck with a stronger emphasis on comfort and presentation.
- Platinum: This is the top luxury pick, with remote tailgate release, unique leather seating design, navigation, and adaptive steering for buyers who want the most upscale Super Duty experience.
The safety package centers on the truck’s mirrors, cameras, airbags, traction control, and SOS post-crash alert system, and those features help make even a large truck easier to live with.

What is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty's resale value?
The current average of $33,361 sits slightly below last year's $34,851.
That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited unless you choose a well-kept truck with desirable equipment. For a seller, the current pricing trend points to steady demand rather than a rapidly appreciating asset.
Trucks with strong capability and broad buyer appeal tend to hold attention better than niche vehicles, especially when they’re configured for towing or work use. A clean history and strong condition should matter a lot if you want to protect value later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The truck’s safety equipment includes massive compound mirrors, a 360-degree camera system, a front camera for tight parking situations, a full complement of airbags, traction control, and an SOS post-crash alert system. Those features are especially useful in a truck this large, where visibility and maneuvering matter a lot.
The camera system is a major advantage when you’re trailering or parking, and the mirrors help reduce blind spots around the truck and trailer. The available safety tech is practical rather than flashy, but it fits the Super Duty’s job-first mission well.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty or consider a different year?

- The 2017 stands out as the first year of the all-new Super Duty redesign, with stronger tech integration and serious towing capability.
The bottom line: If you want the newest-feeling version of this generation and value the combination of capability and modern tech, the 2017 is a strong choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained truck you can find.
