Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty earns a 4.2/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its power, towing capability, comfort features, and diesel strength, which fits the truck’s work-first mission. The overview also points to a heavy-duty pickup built for pulling, hauling, and moving gear, while still offering newer technology that makes ownership easier. Even with that capability focus, the market still shows 30.0% good and great deals, so you have room to shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty reliable?

Owners rate it 4.2/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback highlights reliability, dependability, and the kind of trouble-free strength you want from a heavy-duty truck you plan to keep for the long haul. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Super Duty is built to take a beating and keep moving for hundreds of thousands of miles. Its work-focused construction and diesel strength support that reputation, and the ownership experience is helped by tech that makes towing and parking easier. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a truck this capable may have seen hard use, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty?

At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the truck’s structure, towing equipment, and interior controls. Because this model is often used for demanding work, pay close attention to signs of heavy wear, especially if the truck has been used for hauling or towing. It’s also smart to focus on how well the truck’s technology and convenience features still function, since those are part of the appeal of this year.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum. The base trim is the most utilitarian, while higher trims add more upscale design and equipment, with Platinum bringing remote tailgate release, unique leather seating, navigation, and adaptive steering.
• Powertrain: You can choose a 6.2-liter gas V8 or a 6.7-liter PowerStroke turbodiesel V8. The gas engine makes 385 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, while the diesel makes 440 hp and 925 pound-feet of torque. Power goes through a 6-speed automatic, with available 4-wheel drive and low range.
• Safety package: The truck includes massive compound mirrors, a 360-degree camera system, a front camera, a full complement of airbags, traction control, and an SOS post-crash alert system.
• Infotainment: It uses Ford’s Sync 3 system with Bluetooth smartphone pairing, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The interface is designed to be easy to use, and the camera system adds helpful trailering views.
• Fuel efficiency: In mixed driving, the diesel returned 15.9 miles per gallon, and you can expect roughly 15 miles per gallon even in typical use.

Which 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty trim should I buy?

The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty is offered in 5 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the work-focused starting point, so it makes sense if you want the Super Duty’s core capability without paying for extra comfort or luxury equipment.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more balanced mix of equipment while staying closer to the truck’s practical roots.
• Lariat: Choose this if you want a more upscale daily-driving experience and are willing to pay for additional comfort and convenience.
• King Ranch: This trim suits you if you want a more distinctive, premium-feeling heavy-duty truck with a stronger luxury lean.

• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.03% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty's resale value?

The current average of $33,529 sits slightly below last year's $34,937.

That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the truck’s strong capability and broad appeal in the heavy-duty segment help support demand. If you keep mileage, condition, and maintenance in good shape, you should be able to protect more of its value over time than a neglected example would.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.2/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty safe?

The 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

It comes with massive compound mirrors, a 360-degree camera system, a front camera, a full complement of airbags, traction control, and an SOS post-crash alert system. The camera setup is especially useful for parking and trailering, since it helps you see around the truck’s large front end and blind spots. The safety content does not call out a named driver-assistance suite, so the truck’s safety story is more about visibility and basic protection than advanced automation.

Should I buy a 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.03% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.2/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 model year stands out for being all-new, with stronger tech integration that makes towing and ownership easier.

The bottom line: If you want a heavy-duty truck with strong capability, modern tech, and a market that has softened a bit, the 2017 is a sensible place to shop. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it against nearby years, but the 2017’s combination of capability and updated equipment makes it a strong candidate when you find a clean, well-kept example.

How does the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty compare to the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

Our experts score the 2017 Ford F-250 Super Duty 8/10 and the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 8/10.

The Ford gives you a stronger market presence here, with more listings available and a slightly lower average used price than the Chevrolet. The Silverado has a slightly higher share of good and great deals and a slightly better accident-free share, so it may reward careful shoppers who prioritize condition and value. If you want the broader inventory and the Ford’s standout towing-tech story, the F-250 is compelling; if you want to focus on deal quality and accident-free listings, the Silverado deserves a close look.
