Is the 2017 RAM 2500 a good car?

Yes — the 2017 RAM 2500 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise the powerful performance, comfortable interior, and user-friendly features, and they also call out reliability and towing capability. The overview frames it as a heavy-duty truck that can handle worksite demands while still serving as a family hauler, so you get a broader-use truck than a bare-bones work vehicle.

Is the 2017 RAM 2500 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to reliability, and many buyers say they can count on its towing capability and everyday usability. The expert summary also emphasizes that it is built to be powerful and functional enough for heavy-duty use while still being comfortable to live with.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that some trucks may have been worked hard, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 RAM 2500?

At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the truck’s structure, body, and mechanical condition. Because this model is often used for towing and work, pay close attention to signs of hard use, uneven wear, and any evidence of repairs. A clean-looking truck can still hide expensive issues, so condition should matter as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup ranges from the work-focused Tradesman to the well-equipped Limited, with the SLT, Big Horn, Laramie, and Laramie Longhorn in between. The Tradesman is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add features like larger touchscreens, heated and ventilated seats, parking sensors, and Ram Box cargo management.
• Powertrain: You can get a 5.7-liter V8 with 383 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque, a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 with 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque, or a 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel with 350 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque with the manual or 370 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque with the automatic. The diesel is the torque leader, while the gas engines pair with the 6-speed automatic.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and electronic stability control. A reversing camera is optional, and parking sensors are available on some trims.
• Infotainment: The Tradesman gets a basic LCD-screen radio, while SLT, Big Horn, and Power Wagon trims use a 5-inch color touchscreen. The 8.4-inch Uconnect system is standard on the Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited. There’s no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto yet.
• Fuel efficiency: In testing, the Power Wagon with the 6.4-liter Hemi returned just under 12 mpg combined.

Which 2017 RAM 2500 trim should I buy?

The 2017 RAM 2500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Tradesman, SLT, Big Horn, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn, and Limited.

Here's the short version:

• Tradesman: This is the work-first choice, with vinyl bench seats, a basic LCD-screen radio, steel wheels, and plastic bumpers. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry point and do not need comfort features.
• SLT: This adds the improved 5-inch touchscreen, cloth seats, chrome bumpers, a mini trip computer, and a one-year SiriusXM subscription. It is a practical step up if you want more everyday usability without jumping too far in price.
• Big Horn: This trim adds fog lights, a power driver’s seat, a backup camera, and the larger 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen. It looks like the best-value trim because it brings in several meaningful convenience upgrades.
• Laramie: You get plenty of chrome, plus heated and ventilated front seats and front and rear parking sensors. This is the better pick if you want a more upscale daily driver.
• Laramie Longhorn: The content identifies this as a higher upmarket step, and it pairs with the 8.4-inch Uconnect system and a more premium positioning. It suits you if you want a more luxurious truck feel.
• Limited: This is the top trim, with a unique grille design, full leather interior, remote start, Ram Box cargo management, and lots of chrome. Choose it if you want the most fully equipped version.

The safety content notes that a reversing camera is optional, so if that matters to you, make sure the truck you’re considering has it equipped.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 RAM 2500?

The market looks moderate and selective, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.

• Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,543 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.43% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 65.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $30,326, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 RAM 2500's resale value?

The current average of $30,358 sits slightly below last year's $31,765.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale if you buy at the right number. If you keep the truck in strong condition and maintain it well, you may be better positioned when it comes time to sell. The current market also shows enough demand to support used-truck values, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 RAM 2500 safe?

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front and side-impact airbags, tire pressure monitoring, and electronic stability control. A reversing camera is optional, and parking sensors are available on some trims, which can help with maneuvering a large truck.

One caveat is that the camera is not standard, so you should verify whether the truck you’re considering has the visibility aids you want.

Should I buy a 2017 RAM 2500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.43% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The expert summary says the truck is built to be more than a simple work truck, with comfort and capability aimed at both daily driving and heavy-duty use.

The bottom line: The 2017 is a strong choice if you want a heavy-duty truck that balances work capability with comfort and everyday livability. If you are price-sensitive, you can still shop this year carefully and focus on well-kept trucks with clean histories, since the market offers enough inventory to compare. If you want newer tech and standard backup-camera convenience, a later year may be worth considering.

How does the 2017 RAM 2500 compare to the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

Our experts score the 2017 RAM 2500 8/10 and the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 8/10.

The RAM gives you a slightly lower average used price and a larger pool of listings, while the Silverado has a slightly higher accident-free share. The RAM also stands out for its broad trim range and more comfort-focused cabin story, while the Silverado comparison here is tighter on market metrics than on feature detail. If you want more inventory and a truck that leans into livability, the RAM has the edge; if you prioritize a slightly cleaner listing mix, the Silverado is worth a look.
