2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2022 Lincoln Navigator Reviews Summary

Sometimes, only a full-size SUV will do. Among the handful of large luxury models available, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator stands apart with its classically elegant design, robust towing capacity, and soothing comfort in all three rows of seats.

For the 2022 Navigator, Lincoln makes numerous changes to update the SUV’s styling, comfort, technology, safety, and driving dynamics. To experience the changes first-hand, we headed to Scottsdale, Arizona following a cold snap of winter weather. In short, the facelift has revived the aging Navigator, keeping it competitive against newer rivals.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition, evaluated in Black Onyx, was a striking vehicle that eradicated almost all chrome from its exterior, transforming it into a rolling black hole. Despite its modern touches like the signature Lexus spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights, the GX still looked dated, reminiscent of its first-generation model from 2002. The interior, however, showcased Lexus's legendary craftsmanship with smooth, silky refinement and a quiet cabin, save for the faint roar of the standard V8 engine.

In contrast, the 2022 Lincoln Navigator received subtle styling updates, including new headlights, taillights, and a restyled front end. The new Audi-esque grille, however, was less elegant than its predecessor. Inside, the Navigator dazzled with quality materials and a mid-century modern design, featuring Lincoln’s Constellation instrumentation and infotainment display theme. The new Sync 4 infotainment system with a 13.2-inch touchscreen display and a 28-speaker Revel 3D audio system further enhanced the luxurious experience.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460, with its 4.6-liter V8 engine, produced 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. This powertrain, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system, allowed the GX to tow up to 6,500 pounds. Despite its 5,126-pound curb weight and a drag coefficient of 0.35, the GX managed a 7.8-second run to 60 mph. However, its fuel economy was a modest 16 mpg in combined driving. The GX’s Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System (KDSS) improved ride stability, making it more agreeable to drive, though the slow, heavy steering and touchy brake pedal were less appealing.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator, powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, delivered a robust 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain, coupled with a 10-speed automatic transmission, allowed the Navigator to tow between 8,100 and 8,700 pounds. The adaptive-damping suspension with Road Preview and a new electronic brake booster enhanced the driving experience. The Navigator’s fuel economy was rated at 18 mpg in combined driving, and during testing, it averaged 18.6 mpg. The SUV’s 4WD system, 9.7 inches of ground clearance, and adaptive suspension made it capable in various driving conditions, including snow and mud.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

10/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat and clear outward visibility. Its tall, narrow, and short design made it maneuverable in various environments. The Black Line Special Edition featured NuLuxe upholstery, black ash wood trim, and a black headliner. However, the rear seat access was tricky, and the third-row seat was cramped and eliminated cargo space. The GX’s cargo capacity was limited to 64.7 cubic feet with the second-row seat folded down, and the side-swinging tailgate made loading cumbersome.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator’s 30-way power-adjustable front seats were exceptionally comfortable, and the second-row captain’s chairs offered heating, ventilation, and massage functions. The third-row seat provided roomy accommodations, thanks to the independent rear suspension design. The Navigator’s cargo space was generous, with 19.3 cubic feet behind the third-row seat, 57.5 cubic feet with the third-row seat folded, and a maximum of 103.3 cubic feet with the second-row seats collapsed. The long-wheelbase Navigator L offered even more cargo space.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and navigation. The system was easy to use, with a dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition technology. However, the placement of the stereo controls below the off-roading controls was awkward. The GX also offered Intuitive Parking Assist, surround-view, and terrain-view cameras.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator’s new Sync 4 infotainment system, with a 13.2-inch touchscreen display, supported Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The system was user-friendly, with physical controls for volume, stereo tuning, and climate functions. The voice recognition system was improved, though not perfect. The upgraded Lincoln Play rear-seat entertainment system with Amazon Fire TV provided access to streaming services. The test vehicle also featured a 28-speaker Revel 3D audio system, delivering a sensational audio experience.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 Lincoln Navigator

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX, with its older structural design, lacked crash-test ratings. However, it came with Lexus Safety System+, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Additional safety features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect services. However, the GX lacked more advanced safety technologies found in its competitors.

The 2022 Lincoln Navigator introduced several new driver assistance systems, including Intersection Assist, Road Edge Detection, Active Park Assist 2.0, and ActiveGlide. The surround-view camera system was newly standard. ActiveGlide, Lincoln’s semi-autonomous, hands-free driving technology, performed well on approved highways but required the driver’s attention. These new safety features enhanced the Navigator’s overall safety profile.
