2021 Subaru Ascent Reviews Summary

Few automakers have the brand loyalty enjoyed by Subaru—and with good reason. Its cars, wagons, and SUVs are safe, reliable, and provide features like standard all-wheel drive (AWD). A three-row SUV with all of these benefits seems like a no-brainer, and so the 2021 Subaru Ascent is ideally positioned to differentiate itself from the rest of this family-hauling segment. In addition to its spacious cabin and a long list of standard features, the Ascent gains a few key safety features as newly standard equipment.

2021 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Most modern SUVs are really car-based crossovers—lifted station wagons, or minivans without the sliding doors. That’s not the case with the 2021 Lexus GX 460.

Like the mythical Loch Ness Monster, the GX is a creature that time forgot. It’s one of the last SUVs with truck-like body-on-frame construction and true off-road capability. That’s because the GX is actually a rebadged Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (a smaller version of the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser not sold in the United States), and is related to the Toyota 4Runner. It’s also genuinely old: the current generation dates back to the 2010 model year, and Lexus has kept it in production with some updates of styling and tech over the years.

That makes the GX a fairly odd proposition on the new-car market. It has the off-road capability, not as a lifestyle statement, but because that’s what was still expected of SUVs when it was launched. The GX sits between the RX and LX in Lexus’ lineup but has little direct competition. Its only real rival is the much newer Land Rover Discovery.

For the 2021 model year, the GX gets some minor updates, including a new Premium Plus Package, and acoustic front side glass. Lexus continues to offer only the GX 460 model, with a single powertrain option, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and three trim levels: base, Premium, and Luxury. Our test car was the midlevel Premium version.

Look and feel

2021 Subaru Ascent

7/10

2021 Lexus GX

7/10

When the 2021 Subaru Ascent was introduced, it filled a significant gap in Subaru's lineup, offering a three-row SUV that had been missing since the poorly received Tribeca. The Ascent's design was a scaled-up version of Subaru's smaller models like the Forester and Outback, creating a familiar look for brand loyalists. Inside, the cabin mirrored other Subaru models, likely a strategic move to connect the Ascent with Subaru's popular lineup. The Ascent came in four trims: Standard, Premium, Limited, and Touring, each adding more features and luxury as you moved up the range.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460, on the other hand, retained much of its decade-old design, with only minor updates like the spindle grille and new LED headlights. The GX's styling was aggressive and distinctive, appealing to those who preferred a traditional SUV look. However, the interior felt dated, with wood trim that seemed more like plastic and a high center console that limited legroom. Despite these drawbacks, the GX offered standard leather upholstery and a range-topping Luxury trim with semi-aniline leather.

Performance

2021 Subaru Ascent

7/10

2021 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2021 Subaru Ascent was powered by a turbocharged 2.4-liter boxer four-cylinder engine, producing 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, provided adequate performance for most driving scenarios. The Ascent excelled in comfort and handling, with 8.7 inches of ground clearance making it capable in snowy conditions and light off-roading. It could tow up to 5,000 pounds and included Trailer Stability Assist as standard.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 featured a 4.6-liter V8 engine, delivering 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. While the V8 provided strong acceleration from a stop, the GX's 5,130-pound weight made high-speed maneuvers more challenging. The body-on-frame construction resulted in a less refined ride compared to unibody SUVs. However, the GX excelled off-road with a Torsen center differential, low-range gearing, and various driver aids like hill-descent control. It could tow up to 6,500 pounds and offered an optional Off-Road Package for enhanced capability.

Form and function

2021 Subaru Ascent

10/10

2021 Lexus GX

5/10

The 2021 Subaru Ascent offered 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 47.5 cubic feet with the third row folded, and up to 86.5 cubic feet with all rear seats down. It could seat up to eight passengers, or seven with optional second-row captain's chairs. The first two rows were spacious, while the third row was best for children on longer trips. The Ascent featured 19 cupholders and numerous storage compartments, though it lacked a hands-free power liftgate.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460's interior felt cramped due to its upright dashboard and high center console. The steering wheel's odd angle and tall seating position were reminiscent of driving a bus. Visibility was good thanks to the boxy profile, but forward visibility was hindered by the tall hood. The GX offered three rows of seating for seven, with a power-folding third row available on higher trims. However, the third row was difficult to access and best suited for children. Cargo space was limited to 64.7 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded, significantly less than some competitors.

Technology

2021 Subaru Ascent

9/10

2021 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Subaru Ascent featured the StarLink infotainment system with logical menus and large icons. Standard tech included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, two front and two second-row USB ports, satellite radio, and Bluetooth. Optional features included third-row USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon premium stereo.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 was light on tech, lacking Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It offered Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant connectivity, with two USB ports for the first two rows. The standard infotainment system had outdated graphics and limited functionality, but analog controls made it user-friendly. A 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system was available.

Safety

2021 Subaru Ascent

9/10

2021 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2021 Subaru Ascent was an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ thanks to its crash test results and Subaru’s EyeSight suite of driver-assistance features. This included automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic high beams. Optional safety features included reverse automatic emergency braking, rain-sensing windshield wipers, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

The 2021 Lexus GX 460 had not been rated by NHTSA or IIHS. It came standard with the Lexus Safety System+ bundle, which included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were also standard, but it lacked some advanced features found in other Lexus and Toyota models.
