2022 Subaru Ascent Reviews Summary

Subaru owners are a loyal bunch, and for good reason. The automaker’s cars and SUVs enjoy reputations for durability, safety, and getting you where you need to go regardless of weather and road conditions. But there is only one Subaru made to carry more than five people, and it’s the Ascent midsize three-row SUV. This year, Subaru makes one change to the 2022 Ascent lineup, adding a new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.

2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available with Standard, Advanced, or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. It's technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

2022 Subaru Ascent

6/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent, particularly in its new Onyx Edition trim, embraced the trend of blacking out shiny exterior trims, offering a sporty appearance that was previously absent. This edition featured blacked-out exterior trim and badges, black 20-inch aluminum wheels, a unique grille design, and special interior trim. The interior was wrapped in water-repellant StarTex synthetic leather, available in a gray two-tone scheme with light gray stitching, which was a refreshing change from the typical black interiors. However, the StarTex material had a tendency to trap sweat, making it less comfortable on hot days. The Ascent's interior also included metallic trim on the dashboard and door panels, adding to its appeal.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication and grace with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille. The midsize SUV, measuring over 16 feet long, featured 22-inch alloy wheels on the Prestige trim, enhancing its stately presence. The exterior's elegance was further accentuated by the matte Brunswick Green paint job. Inside, the dark green quilted leather seats, split dash with thin horizontal air vents, and a mix of metal and matte wood trim created a luxurious atmosphere. The center console, with its three large dials, and the unique two-spoke steering wheel added to the GV80's distinctiveness. However, the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed somewhat out of place, appearing as if it was plunked on top of the dash.

Performance

2022 Subaru Ascent

8/10

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent was equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. It came standard with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and all-wheel drive (AWD). The Ascent's fuel economy was rated at 22 mpg combined for versions with 20-inch wheels, though testing showed an average of 20.5 mpg. The flat-four engine layout contributed to a lower center of gravity, enhancing handling. The CVT featured eight programmed ratios and manual shift control, allowing for brisk acceleration and commendable passing power. The Ascent could tow up to 5,000 pounds and included Subaru’s X-Mode off-road traction control system, hill descent control, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance for off-roading capability. However, the lane-keeping and lane-centering assistance technologies sometimes created an unstable feel.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, or a turbo 3.5-liter V6 producing 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The GV80 was not particularly athletic or nimble, taking about five and a half seconds to reach sixty, which was slower than some competitors. However, it excelled at highway driving, with smooth power delivery and shifts. The electronically controlled suspension, combined with active noise cancellation, provided a smooth and quiet freeway commute.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent could accommodate up to eight people with a second-row bench seat, though the third row was best suited for children. The Ascent Onyx Edition was equipped for winter weather with features like water-resistant seat material, triple-zone climate control, and heated front seats. The second-row seats were easy to access, and captain’s chairs were available. The Ascent offered 17.8 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, 47.5 cubic feet behind the second row, and 86.5 cubic feet with both rows folded down.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 boasted luxury touches such as heated and ventilated front and rear seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and an Ergo Motion driver’s seat. A third row was optional, though legroom was limited. The GV80 featured Genesis puddle lamps, a proximity key, and a digital key. The tri-zone climate control system and optional 21-speaker stereo system added to the comfort. The GV80 offered 34.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, expanding to 84 cubic feet with the seats folded down. It had a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds.

Technology

2022 Subaru Ascent

7/10

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent came with a standard 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, and satellite radio. The Premium trim added an 8-inch display with Starlink connected services. The system's voice recognition technology needed improvement, and the Onyx Edition's standard stereo speakers lacked sonic quality. Additional features like a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera were reserved for the Touring trim.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. The infotainment screen was slightly out of reach, and the dial was cumbersome to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were available, though not wirelessly. The GV80 included remote smart parking assist, allowing the car to maneuver in and out of parking spaces without the driver inside.

Safety

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Subaru Ascent received a "Top Safety Pick+" award from the IIHS and five-star crash-test ratings from the NHTSA, except for a four-star rating in rollover resistance. It came standard with EyeSight driver-assistance technology, though it had limitations in direct sunlight and lacked refinement in adaptive cruise control and lane-centering technology. Additional safety features included steering responsive LED headlights and reverse automatic braking.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was equipped with advanced driver’s aids, including forward collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. It featured a video feed of the car’s blind spot in the digital gauge cluster and Highway Drive Assist for hands-on/eyes-up driving aid. The GV80 received a full five-star safety rating from the NHTSA and a "Good" rating for crashworthiness from the IIHS.
