2023 Buick Encore GX Reviews Summary

General Motors has big plans for Buick. The near-luxury division positioned between Chevrolet and Cadillac is slated to go all-electric by the end of the decade, with a fresh lineup of EVs highlighted by a new design language. But those new models aren’t scheduled to arrive for a few more years, so for now Buick carries on with a lineup of conventional gasoline crossover SUVs, of which the 2023 Buick Encore GX is the entry-level option.

The Encore GX was launched for the 2020 model year as a larger sibling to the Buick Encore, but the standard Encore is being discontinued, leaving only the GX for 2023. It slots below the Envision and Enclave in Buick’s three-model crossover lineup.

While Buick is generally considered a step up from mainstream brands, the Encore GX’s size and pricing are more in line with subcompact SUVs from mainstream brands, such as the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30, or the lifted-hatchback Subaru Crosstrek. In fact, the Encore GX shares powertrains and a basic platform with one of these vehicles—the Chevrolet Trailblazer.

The only change for 2023 is a new extra-cost Moonstone Gray Metallic paint option. That means the lineup still consists of base Preferred, mid-level Select, and top Essence trim levels. We tested out an Encore GX Essence for this review.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s body-on-frame SUVs appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road, and do either in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favor for anyone not enamored by a V8 growl.

2023 Buick Encore GX

5/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX departed from Buick's storied design history, presenting a style that didn't echo its past nor forge a new path. Its rounded exterior and tall stance resulted in awkward proportions that failed to capture the SUV allure that many buyers sought. Even with the optional Sport Touring Package, which added subtle enhancements like different bumpers and a black mesh grille, the changes were barely noticeable unless compared directly to a standard model. Inside, the Encore GX Essence trim offered expected features like leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control, but the abundance of plastic reminded occupants of its position at the lower end of Buick's lineup. The interior design, with its blob-like dashboard, harked back to less favorable design eras, though the instrument cluster stood out with its well-framed digital display.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX boasted a commanding presence with its large spindle grille and significant ground clearance. The Black Line Special Edition, limited to 3,000 units, added exclusive paint options like Nori Green Pearl. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's design leaned more towards functionality, with a short wheelbase and minimal overhangs suggesting off-road capability. The interior, however, was marred by an unexpected amount of plastic, a trade-off for maintaining the model's low sales volume. Yet, luxury touches like heated and cooled seats and premium leather upholstery were present. The GX's design, while not cutting-edge, was practical, with a focus on off-road prowess rather than modern aesthetics.

Performance

2023 Buick Encore GX

5/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX offered two turbocharged three-cylinder engines. The base 1.2-liter engine produced 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 1.3-liter engine delivered 155 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive available for the 1.3-liter variant. The FWD models used a CVT, whereas the AWD models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission. The 1.3-liter AWD test car provided a stronger acceleration than expected, though power delivery was not smooth, requiring a patient driving style. The Encore GX excelled in ride comfort and noise reduction, thanks to its well-damped suspension and active noise cancellation. However, its driving dynamics were less impressive, with slow steering and significant body roll.

The 2023 Lexus GX was defined by its 4.6-liter V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 offered a satisfying linear power delivery. The GX's towing capacity of 6,500 pounds was notable, though its fuel economy was less so, with EPA estimates of 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. The GX's weight contributed to its predictable but noticeable body roll. Despite its age, Lexus improved the GX's driving dynamics, with communicative road feel and strong brakes. The standard 4WD system, with a Torsen limited-slip differential, enhanced its off-road capabilities, making it adept in various terrains.

Form and function

2023 Buick Encore GX

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX provided competitive passenger space, with headroom comparable to rivals like the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30. However, the Kia Seltos offered more rear legroom. The Encore GX's cargo space was respectable, with 23.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 50.2 cubic feet with them folded. The front seats were positioned closely, reducing the sense of spaciousness, and lacked thigh support. Despite the limited cabin size, Buick maximized small-item storage with large door pockets and a space-efficient wireless phone charger. The instrumentation was well-executed, with clear notifications and an array of hard buttons, though a dedicated button for the 360-degree camera was missing.

The 2023 Lexus GX featured ample cubby space, with a deep center console bin and convenient cupholders. However, it lacked modern USB-C ports, offering only USB-A. The GX retained physical controls, which were a relief for those averse to touchscreens, though the abundance of buttons required familiarization. The center console lid's sliding mechanism was a thoughtful touch, accommodating different-sized occupants. The second row was comfortable, with captain's chairs or a bench seat option. The third row, however, was cramped and best reserved for emergencies. The side-hinged trunk door required effort to open, and cargo space was limited, with only 11.6 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded.

Technology

2023 Buick Encore GX

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX came standard with an 8-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch driver information display. Optional features included navigation, a head-up display, and an eight-speaker Bose audio system. Standard tech included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and SiriusXM radio. The interface, shared with other GM vehicles, was user-friendly, with graphics that surpassed many competitors. The 8-inch screen, though small by modern standards, was well-integrated into the dashboard.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, already felt outdated. The 10.3-inch touchscreen was an improvement, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The Lexus Remote Touch Interface was rendered unnecessary by the touchscreen. The GX included three years of Lexus Enform Remote and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson stereo. However, the tech lagged behind newer Lexus models, with less crisp graphics and slower response times. The GX's strength lay in its off-road technology, with a robust 4WD system, downhill assist, and the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. The Off-Road Package added features like a multi-terrain monitor and crawl control.

Safety

2023 Buick Encore GX

9/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Buick Encore GX included standard driver assist features such as automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane keep assist, and a Teen Driver system. Optional features included adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and a 360-degree camera system. The Encore GX was an IIHS 2022 Top Safety Pick and received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, with top scores in crash tests but an average rating for child-seat anchor ease of use.

The 2023 Lexus GX had not been crash tested by the NHTSA or IIHS, but it included several advanced driver assistance systems. These included automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist. Despite its older design, the GX's safety features were up-to-date, though it lacked some top-end features like lane-tracing assist.
