2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional body-on-frame SUV platform as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 46.7 cubic feet of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Volvo XC90 Reviews Summary

In sophisticated circles, the XC90 can feel like an old friend. Its design has evolved subtly over the past twenty years, making it recognizable without looking old. For 2023, the XC90’s powertrains have evolved, too. Out with the T5 and T6 engines, in with the B5 and B6 mild-hybrid powertrains. Finally, Google lovers will absolutely want to investigate the new XC90’s forward-thinking infotainment technology.

Look and feel

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Volvo XC90

10/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 Black Line Special Edition was a striking vehicle, especially in its Black Onyx color. This model eradicated almost all chrome from the exterior, transforming the SUV into a sleek, dark presence on the road. However, it quickly accumulated dust, making it look drab and old. Despite its modern touches like the signature Lexus spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights, the GX's design felt dated, reminiscent of its first-generation model from 2002. Inside, the cabin quality was impeccable, with smooth, silky refinement and a quiet atmosphere, save for the faint roar of the V8 engine.

In contrast, the 2023 Volvo XC90 showcased a significant evolution in Volvo's design language. Gone were the days of boxy, toaster-like vehicles. The XC90's front end was stout and solid without being ostentatious, and its "Thor’s Hammer" headlights added a modern flair. The test vehicle, with its 21-inch wheels and Platinum Gray paint, exuded a sense of understated elegance. Inside, the XC90's cabin was a blend of luxurious materials, including two-tone leather, metal speaker covers, and wood deco inlays, creating a minimalist yet sophisticated environment.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Volvo XC90

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460, with its 4.6-liter V8 engine, produced 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. This powertrain, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system, allowed the GX to tow up to 6,500 pounds. Despite its hefty curb weight of 5,126 pounds, the GX managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds. However, its fuel economy was a drawback, with an EPA estimate of 16 mpg in combined driving. The GX's Kinetic Dynamics Suspension System (KDSS) improved stability and off-road capability, but the slow, heavy steering and touchy brake pedal detracted from the overall driving experience.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 introduced new B5 and B6 engines with mild-hybrid technology, replacing the older T5 and T6 engines. The B5 engine, with a turbocharger and 48-volt mild-hybrid system, produced 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The B6 engine, which our test car had, combined a supercharger, turbo, and mild-hybrid tech to deliver 295 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The mild-hybrid system improved fuel efficiency and smoothed out the driving experience, though it didn't offer full-hybrid benefits. The XC90's eight-speed automatic transmission was responsive, and the vehicle handled well despite its size, with minimal road and wind noise.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 Volvo XC90

6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position and clear visibility from its 10-way power-adjustable seat. The interior featured comfortable seats and well-placed padding, though some switchgear felt outdated. The Black Line Special Edition included NuLuxe upholstery, black ash wood trim, and triple-zone automatic climate control. However, accessing the rear seats was challenging, and the third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space. The GX's side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, and its cargo capacity was limited to 64.7 cubic feet with all seats folded.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's interior was elegant but had limited storage space for smaller items. The second row was comfortable but difficult to adjust, and accessing the third row was nearly impossible with the standard bench seat. The XC90 offered 12.5 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row in place, expanding to 65.5 cubic feet with all seats folded. While this was less than some competitors, the XC90's smaller size contributed to its car-like driving experience.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Volvo XC90

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and navigation. The system was easy to use, with a dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition. However, the placement of stereo controls below off-roading controls was confusing. The GX also included a CD player, a Lexus app, and available surround-view and terrain-view cameras.

The 2023 Volvo XC90's 9-inch touchscreen ran on Google OS, integrating Google Maps, Spotify, NPR, and Google Assistant. The system's natural-language recognition was excellent, and owners could issue commands via Google Home devices. However, the reliance on the touchscreen for many functions was frustrating, and more physical buttons would have been appreciated. Despite this, the XC90's tech was advanced and user-friendly.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Volvo XC90

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX, despite its age, included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. It also had blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect services. However, it lacked some advanced safety technologies found in competitors.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 was a safety leader, with a five-star NHTSA rating and a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS. It included adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and Pilot Assist technology, which maintained distance and lane position. These features were standard, reinforcing Volvo's reputation for safety.
