2021 Mazda CX-5 Reviews Summary

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 is a competitive compact SUV for buyers looking to satisfy the needs of the typical family. For the 2021 model year, Mazda has enhanced the model’s tech and discontinued the unpopular diesel engine in the United States. There’s also a new Carbon Edition for buyers to choose from. Despite the changes, the highlights and quibbles about the SUV are mostly unchanged from the 2020 model year.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, is superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2021 Mazda CX-5

9/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 presented a sleek and smooth design, standing out in a market where many automakers favored bold and angular aesthetics. Its exterior was consistent across most trim levels, with the base Sport model featuring automatic LED headlights, 17-inch wheels, and a rear roof spoiler. The Touring trim added enhancements like leatherette seats and dual-zone climate control, while the Carbon Edition introduced unique styling elements such as red leather seats and black metallic wheels. The top-tier Signature model offered premium features like Nappa leather seats and genuine wood trim, rivaling luxury brands in terms of interior quality and design.

In contrast, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered a rugged and adventurous look, with buyers choosing between two-door and four-door models. The Wrangler came in four core trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon, with numerous special editions available. The High Tide special edition, based on the Sport S trim, included features like LED lighting, a body-color hardtop, and a Gorilla Glass windshield. The Xtreme Recon package added a suspension lift and 35-inch tires, enhancing its off-road capabilities. The Wrangler's design emphasized functionality and durability, with a focus on off-road performance and customization options.

Performance

2021 Mazda CX-5

8/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 offered two engine options, with the base model featuring a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission was standard, with front-wheel drive as the default and all-wheel drive available. The turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, available on higher trims, delivered 250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque, providing a more spirited driving experience. The CX-5's fuel efficiency varied, with the most economical version achieving 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The turbocharged models were slightly less efficient but still competitive within the segment.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide featured a 3.6-liter V6 engine with eTorque mild-hybrid technology, producing 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission was a mandatory option, and the Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system was available. The Wrangler's fuel economy was less impressive, with an average of 16.8 mpg over a week of testing. The Wrangler's driving experience was unique, with a focus on off-road capability and an immersive, open-air experience. However, it required frequent stops at the gas station and had a reputation for a rough ride and noisy cabin.

Form and function

7/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 offered a comfortable and stylish interior, with good headroom in both rows but limited legroom for rear passengers. The SUV featured straightforward climate controls and a larger shifter that took up passenger space. Cargo capacity was below average for the segment, with 30.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 59.6 cubic feet with the seats folded. The CX-5's design prioritized comfort and ease of use, making it a practical choice for families.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide's raised suspension made entry and exit challenging, especially for shorter individuals. The interior featured durable cloth upholstery and a mix of plastic and rubber materials. Visibility varied, with some areas offering excellent views and others requiring adjustments. Rear-seat passengers faced similar entry challenges but found comfortable accommodations once inside. Cargo space was generous, with 31.7 cubic feet behind the rear seat and 72.4 cubic feet with the seats folded. The Wrangler's design emphasized durability and off-road capability, with features like floor drain plugs for easy cleaning.

Technology

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 came standard with a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, though its operating system was not user-friendly. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, providing a workaround for entertainment and navigation. The system's design was uncluttered but lacked modern aesthetics, and the controls were not intuitive for all users.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide featured a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. While the larger Uconnect 8.4 system offered additional features, the basic setup met most needs. The Wrangler included options like remote engine start, satellite radio, and heated front seats, enhancing its technology offerings.

Safety

2022 Jeep Wrangler

2/10

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 boasted a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and forward collision warning. Optional upgrades included a head-up display and a surround-view camera system. The CX-5 earned high safety ratings, with a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide included the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, adding features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. However, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were less favorable, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS. Safety features were optional rather than standard, and the Wrangler's design required careful driving.
