2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class Reviews Summary

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G550 is a five-passenger luxury body-on-frame SUV. Over 40 years since its debut, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class has retained its blocky, utilitarian exterior shape while evolving with a luxury interior and sophisticated powertrain, mechanicals, and technological prowess. Pricing for the G550 starts at $131,750.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, is superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

9/10

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, known for its iconic boxy design, was a blend of ruggedness and luxury. Its straight-edged, two-box design was a nod to its military origins, yet it had become a status symbol among the elite. The G-Class offered a retro exterior that stood out in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, with a hand-built construction in Graz, Austria. Inside, the G-Class featured a sophisticated design with a 12.3-inch widescreen infotainment system and a matching virtual instrument panel, allowing for a customizable and ambient cabin experience. Despite its luxurious appeal, the G-Class retained its off-road capabilities, making it a versatile choice for both urban and adventurous settings.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, particularly in the High Tide edition, was a testament to Jeep's commitment to off-road prowess and rugged charm. With options for two-door or four-door models, and a variety of powertrains including a V6 with eTorque mild hybrid electrification, the Wrangler offered versatility for different driving needs. The High Tide edition stood out with its Xtreme Recon package, featuring a suspension lift, 35-inch tires, and a robust axle ratio, enhancing its off-road capabilities. Despite its rugged nature, the Wrangler's interior was basic, with durable cloth upholstery and practical features like floor drain plugs for easy cleaning. The Wrangler's design and features catered to those seeking an adventurous driving experience, even if it meant sacrificing some comfort and refinement.

Performance

2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class

2022 Jeep Wrangler

7/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class G550 was a powerhouse with its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine, delivering 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque. This robust engine allowed the G550 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds, impressive for a vehicle weighing 5,551 pounds. The G550 featured a nine-speed automatic transmission and permanent four-wheel drive, with Dynamic Select driving programs for various terrains. Its off-road capabilities were further enhanced by optional adjustable suspension and three locking differentials. The G63 variant took performance to another level with 577 horsepower, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Despite its power, the G-Class had a modest fuel economy, with the G550 rated at 13 mpg city and 19 mpg highway.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide was equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 engine with eTorque mild-hybrid technology, producing 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the Wrangler offered a unique driving experience, especially with its Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system. The Wrangler's fuel economy was rated at 21 mpg combined, but real-world driving with the Xtreme Recon Package modifications resulted in an average of 16.8 mpg. The Wrangler's driving experience was characterized by its ruggedness, with a loud cabin, vague steering, and a bumpy ride, yet these traits were part of its charm for off-road enthusiasts.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Wrangler

4/10

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offered a spacious and luxurious interior, with 38.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, expandable to 68.6 cubic feet with the seats folded. The G550's cabin was roomy, with comfortable seating and ample storage options. Its body-on-frame construction allowed for a payload capacity of over 1,000 pounds and a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. However, some luxury features, like ventilated seats, were only available in expensive packages. The G-Class's design included a spare tire mounted on the tailgate, adding to its rugged aesthetic.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide, with its raised suspension, posed challenges for entry and exit, especially for shorter individuals. The interior featured durable cloth upholstery and practical elements like plastic and rubber materials. The driving position was close to the steering wheel and windshield, requiring some adjustment. Visibility varied, with challenges in certain situations, but safety features like a reversing camera and rear cross-traffic alert helped. The Wrangler offered 31.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, expandable to 72.4 cubic feet with the seats folded. The tailgate, with its heavy spare tire, required careful handling.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class boasted advanced technology with twin 12.3-inch HD screens for the instrument panel and infotainment system. These customizable screens, combined with the Burmester Surround Sound system, created an immersive experience. The COMAND system, with unique Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel, offered intuitive control. The G-Class included standard features like WiFi, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, though wireless charging was absent.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide, based on the Sport S trim, featured a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. While it lacked the optional Uconnect 8.4 system with additional features, the basic setup sufficed for most needs. The Wrangler included options like remote engine start, satellite radio, and a passive keyless entry system. The Cold Weather Group added heated seats and a steering wheel, enhancing comfort for open-air driving.

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz G-Class included numerous safety features as standard, such as a rearview camera, active brake assist, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. However, its active lane-keeping assist could be intrusive. The G-Class had not been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA for crash-worthiness.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler High Tide included the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, offering features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. Despite these features, the Wrangler's crash-test ratings were mediocre, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS. Safety features were optional rather than standard, requiring careful driving.
