2021 BMW X7 Reviews Summary

In some parts of America, large luxury three-row SUVs are commonplace, but the list of available models is relatively short. Until recently, one famous German automaker was missing from the menu, but when the X7 arrived for the 2019 model year as a new BMW, that changed.

Based on the BMW X5 and built in the same South Carolina factory, the 2021 BMW X7 sees a few changes for 2021. The standard xDrive40i model gains a 48-volt mild-hybrid powertrain offering an incremental increase in efficiency, BMW cancels the xDrive50i version, and the performance-tuned Alpina XB7 debuts.

BMW also modifies the SUV’s standard, optional, and package equipment this year, restricting many of the X7’s most decadent features to the Alpina XB7.

2022 Land Rover Range Rover Reviews Summary

The iconic Range Rover receives a redesign for 2022, though from the outside the changes can be easy to miss. The interior has been updated with a simpler design and a notable improvement in technology. If you have the budget and desire for a large premium luxury SUV, perhaps with some off-road capabilities, you should start your search here.

2021 BMW X7

8/10

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

8/10

The 2021 BMW X7 was a standout in the luxury SUV segment, often seen navigating the bustling streets of metropolitan Los Angeles. It was known for its superior interior quality, surpassing that of the Cadillac Escalade, and boasted more prestige than the Infiniti QX80 or Lincoln Navigator. The X7 also offered advanced technological features that outshone the Lexus LX 570, and its visual presence was more commanding than the Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class. Despite its impressive attributes, the X7's appeal was subjective, as personal preference played a significant role in this segment. The X7 was available in three versions, with the xDrive40i starting at $74,900, the M50i at $99,800, and the Alpina BX7 at $141,300. The test vehicle, an X7 xDrive40i, was equipped with numerous luxury features and option packages, bringing its price to $91,745.

The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover underwent a subtle evolution rather than a complete redesign, maintaining its iconic broad, rounded face and unadorned sheet metal. The most noticeable change was at the rear, where thin LED strips replaced the old square taillights. The Range Rover emphasized its size, especially in the long-wheelbase version, which added eight inches in length. Inside, the cabin was simplified with fewer buttons and a larger touchscreen, giving it a modern look. The materials used were of exceptional quality, with premium leather and rich wood trim elements. The Range Rover's interior was more refined than its competitors, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLS, BMW X7, and Cadillac Escalade, rivaling even the more expensive Maybach and Bentley models.

Performance

2021 BMW X7

2022 Land Rover Range Rover

7/10

The 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i featured a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 331 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive AWD system. The eBoost mild-hybrid technology added a 48-volt starter/generator and battery, enhancing fuel efficiency and responsiveness. Despite the technology, the X7's fuel economy was slightly lower than the previous year, with EPA ratings of 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The X7 accelerated to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, offering ample power. The Dynamic Handling Package improved maneuverability and stability, though the self-leveling air suspension struggled with body motions. The X7 excelled in comfort and quietness, with features like Active Comfort Drive and Integral Active Steering enhancing the driving experience.

The 2022 Range Rover offered two powertrains: the base P400 with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine producing 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque, and the P530 with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine delivering 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard 4WD. The P400 accelerated to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds, with smooth gear shifts and adequate power for most drivers. The Range Rover's handling was surprisingly agile, with well-managed body roll and a calm driving experience. Rear-wheel steering improved maneuverability, and the Terrain Response system optimized off-road capability. The Range Rover provided a smooth ride with minimal noise, making it one of the most comfortable luxury SUVs available.

Form and function

The 2021 BMW X7's interior was luxurious, with features like the Cold Weather Package, Luxury Seating Package, and premium Merino leather upholstery. Front-seat comfort was exceptional, with heated seats, armrests, and steering wheel as standard. The second-row captain's chairs were also comfortable, though access could be challenging due to long rear doors. The third-row seat was surprisingly accommodating for adults, with a five-zone climate control system ensuring comfort. Cargo space was limited behind the third row but expanded to 48.6 cubic feet with the seats folded and 90.4 cubic feet with the second row down.

The 2022 Range Rover offered ample space in the first two rows, enhanced by large windows and a panoramic sunroof. Front seats were cushioned for comfort, with massage functions available. Storage options included two glove boxes, a wireless charging pad, and a large center console bin. The second row provided generous space and features like power recline, USB-C ports, and a household power outlet. The optional third row was accessible via a button, though headroom was limited for adults. Cargo space was 17.1 cubic feet behind the third row, expanding to 43.1 cubic feet with the seats folded and 93 cubic feet at maximum capacity. The split tailgate and adjustable air suspension aided in loading cargo.

The 2021 BMW X7 featured the Live Cockpit Professional digital instrumentation and iDrive 7.0 infotainment system, both with 12.3-inch displays. The system included Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM 360L, and Connected Package Pro. Wireless smartphone charging, natural voice recognition, and gesture control were also available. The iDrive system was user-friendly but could be distracting while driving. A head-up display was included, though visibility was limited with polarized sunglasses.

The 2022 Range Rover introduced a 13-inch touchscreen with the new Pivi Pro infotainment system, offering sharper graphics and quicker responses. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, along with a wireless charging pad. The screen's placement could be improved, but climate controls were well-designed. The Meridian audio system provided excellent sound quality, with an optional 35-speaker upgrade. Additional tech features included Amazon Alexa integration, remote automated parking, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a smartphone app for remote control and monitoring.

The 2021 BMW X7 came standard with numerous safety technologies, with additional features available in the Driving Assistance Professional Package and Parking Assistance Package. The Driving Assistance Professional Package included Active Driving Assistant Pro, which offered features like evasive-steering assist, traffic-jam assist, and lane-control assist. The system was generally effective, though it occasionally struggled with lane maintenance and automated lane changes. The Parking Assistance Package added semi-automated parking assist, a surround-view camera, and a drive recorder system.

The 2022 Range Rover included standard safety features like frontal collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor, lane-keep assist, and a surround-view camera system. These features performed well, with the surround-view cameras proving especially useful off-road. While the Range Rover's safety features were adequate, some competitors offered additional technologies like advanced high beams and emergency stop functions.
